Dry skin and oil hair Prince had this problem, too. His head was oily and his body was dry. His groomer told me that the dry skin has to do with diet. She said to try switching him to a different food and see if there are any changes. He's eating Innova EVO food and he's doing great. I bathe him every two weeks and I clean him with a spray I got at Whole Foods as a touch up in between. The shampoo I use is the Halo brand. Then I rinse him off with rosemary tea. You just make the tea before you bathe him and let it cool while you shampoo him. The rosemary tea acts as a conditioner and finisher. The coat will get really nice and shiny and is much healthier than conditioners. |
I have no idea what kind of coat Chloe has (I have yet to figure out the differences ) but she does tend to look a little oily on her head after about 3 days , but her back seems dry. I bath her once every 5 to 7 days and use spray in between. |
Powder for greasy hair My Yorkies hair gets greasy on his back within several days after I bathe him. The other day I tried rubbing baby powder on the greasy hair. Rubbed it in real good. Then I did his daily brushing on damp hair. The grease is gone and he looks good. All the greasyness is gone. |

Greasy Coat :confused: I have a five year old puppy mill rescue "Nellee" whom I spoil and love. Shortly after I got her, her coat became greasy. Like so many other posts, she is not greasy for a day or two and then by day 5 or 6 she is greasy and smelly. I have tried many different shampoos and she has been to the vet and got a clean bill of health. The vet recommended changing her food which you have to change slowly. So far there has been no change for her. I see a lot of post regarding this issue and no way of fixing it. |
I have the same problem with Riley!! He is now 1-year old. I have never had a problem with him smelling though. He Always smells really good.... Sometimes when I am cuddling with him or giving him hugs and smooches and I just breathing in cause he always smells so good! :) |
My Toby is the same way looks fluffy after bath but by the next day greasy looking :-( I'm feeding him science diet brand food...would you call that highend food?? I'm not to familiar since we just adopted him he is 3 yrs old and that is what the previous owner was feeding him |
Thank Goodness I thought I was doing something wrong because Lilly has a greasy, scruffy look a couple of days after bathing. I do not want to bath her too much. I have been using puppy wipes every couple of days and it seems to help. Got to say I love greasy or not though! |
This whole thread is all of us having the same problem. I wish I could find a way to fix it. Does anyone know of a high quality allergy food? |
I believe the answer you are looking for is seborrhea...it can either be the dry variety or oily. My 2 year old yorkie mix has it and the vet says it is common in yorkies. Due to this condition, my dog has also chewed on himself and had secondary yeast infections. Once I got help from the vet for this he improved. I was bathing him every 3 days because he would get greasy and smell rancid. I can now go a week without bathing him and am working toward going longer. The vet told me that although he has this condition, that by me bathing him so often it causes his body to make even more oil. I normally keep him dressed in a tshirt and that seems to help with him getting the rancid odor. It also keeps dirt from getting on him and sticking to his hair. I hope this helps! Before I forget, the vet did recommend quality food which he was already eating so she ruled out food. In fact, Raley has been seen by 2 separate veterinarians that gave him the same diagnosis! Oily hair I just became the mom of a now 10 week old very tiny girl (1lb) she also has an oily head problem. Do they make a dry shampoo for pups? |
We had been through a lot with our pup's hair which had been shiny and pretty then went all bad. Turned out she was allergic to the microchip. After that was removed we had to make some changes. We changed to Origen Puppy food supplemented with fresh fruit and veggies. We use earthbath hypoallergenic shampoo and conditioner. They have a great dry shampoo for in the RV if needed. But the CURE to the looking oily, dry, frizzled, frazzled, etc within a day or two of bath was a 100% BOAR BRISTLE brush. It distributes the oils through the coat, stimulates the follicles, and she loves it!! She comes running when the brush comes out and just relaxes. I am very soft in the stroke so as not to irritate her skin. It keeps her looking just bathed and we have easily stretched out bathing to 2+ weeks. I discovered this accidentally as we had one in a drawer and I was looking for a solution. |
