Age for first haircut?? KaCee's hair is starting to get really long. It's a good 3.5 to 4 inches long..which isn't that long, but since she's so short it's only about an inch off the floor! So my question is, what age did your yorkie get it's first haircut? My BF thinks it's time for KaCee to get one, but I think maybe she's too young:confused: She'll be 6 months old on the 10th. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! |
hi there i got my bindi groomed just about 2 wks ago. she was a lil over 3 months. she did great and looked oh so pretty |
Hot Rod was about 4 mos when he was first groomed. He's been groomed 2x now and he is 6 1/2 mos. We bath him between grooms. |
Are you going to actually take her to a groomer or do it yourself? Either way, they seem to get used to it easier when they are younger (and more "open" to new experiences). If she's not used to being groomed, you can help by spending some time before the first appointment combing, messing with the ears, the nose, the face, the paws (even if you're not really doing anything), because that's usually the hardest parts of haircuts and where nicks can occur from jumping and pulling away. If you're going to groom her yourself, I'm NO help to you!! :D |

I had mine 1st done at almost 4 month. Then every 4 - 6 weeks after |
Pepper needs her first hair cut also (she is 22 wks old). I'm afraid though if I get her hair cut I'll lose the black and tan coloring she has, I know I'm weird I just want to hold on to the color for as long as I can. She is already sooty gray on the top of her head and I can see the color breaking on her sholders. My baby is growing up!! |
I had Nolee's first cut at about 14 weeks. Now I take him every 1 1/2 to 2 months! I love the puppy cut and would like to keep it that way!:D |
I guess KaCee is long over due for a hair cut then:( She is already so much older than when many of you gave their first. She is just so small! I think I have a hard time remembering how old she is getting because she is so small. Will her coat be easier to manage after her first haircut? Right now she has lots of tiny tangles on her legs and in her armpits. |

Because she is older and isn't used to it, may I make some suggestions? It will be a new and foreign experience for her. She may be quite nervous, so you'll want a good first experience. So shop around VERY carefully for a really GOOD groomer. Ask for references. Ask a lot of questions. Search some of the groomer threads here for questions to ask (i.e., does one person handle them the whole time  in my opinion, or is it a assembly line process :thumbdown in my opinion) and how long most dogs are left at the groomer (i.e., one of our dogs takes 90 minutes; 2 is two hours; I've read stories on here where they are there for practically the whole day! :thumbdown in my opinion). Good luck and remember to post before and after pics! ;) |
Kaba is 8 months old and still has not had a haircut...though her hair grows VERY VERY slooooooowwww. Sometimes I wonder if something is wrong with her..:) |
My Gizmo will be 17 wks tomorrow. I have been researching and trying to decide when to do his first major hair trim. He gets groomed every day and a bath about every 5-7 days depending on how he is looking and smelling. I did trim the hair between the pads of his feet, on his tummy and a little around his eyes a couple of days ago. He didn't like it very well at first because he was pretty scared of the clippers. From what you all have said, it sounds like it is about time for him to get it done. |
Honey got her first hair cut when she was 4 months. I was taking her every two weeks but I stopped because I noticed I was just wasting my money. |
Max was groomed at 5 months. I got him at 4months and the breeder I got him from had never bathed him! I had to get him clipped all the way to his skin just to get all the mats out. I felt so bad :( Thankfully it was still summer months so he wasn't cold. Now he just gets a face trim every 6 weeks or so until I want to trim more than an inch off the rest |
Oh, wow! Poor Max! I bet he was a mess! |

When I saw Max at the breeders I knew I had to get him out of there. His mom and dad were also very filthy, like they'd never had a bath in their lives!! He's is now a healthy little guy though! And he gets a weekly bath and a trim around the face when it's needed. I will be getting him a full trim in a few months when it's warmer though. |
Wow, I can't believe that Max hadn't been bathed at all! It doesn't sound like a very nice place! I bath Gizmo every few days (approx once a week), trim his nails as needed, have trimmed around his face a couple of times & have trimmed around the pads of his feet & his private area to keep him clean. He didn't like any of it at first but now just takes it all in stride. I have been trying to decide if I am going to take him to a groomer or just do it myself. What I really wish is that I could find a good groomer that would allow me to stay and watch so I can see what they do & how they trim him so I can then do my own. |

:animal-pa So I am pretty sure I am going to try to clip & groom Gizmo myself. My biggest holdup is knowing the correct way to clip him. I am pretty sure that I want to go the route of the puppy cut. Can anybody tell me the best place to see a video on how to do the puppy cut, or possibly a book or article on how to do it? |
Jake 12 weeks old. It seems a lot of questions I have, I find the answered already posted. Just bought a male 12 weeks old yorkie. His name is Jake. Thanks to everyone for their posts. LouAnn |
Counting toes I have a new Yorkie puppy, Tucker. Since I realized grooming would be in his future, I made a daily habit of counting his toes. After we count (he lays on his back ), he gets chew time (still on his back), with a big dental chew. I also fondle his feet quite a bit. I'm hoping this will be a help to his future groomers. He's 3 months old and getting to be a fur ball. |
JT has been getting groomed monthly since I got him. I started early so he would be used to the process and also to get the original kennel dirt off. He is a golden Yorkie, which I had never seen before and is absolutely beautiful when he is clean. He does love playing outside and rolling in the grass so the bathing is necessary. I keep his hair clipped to about two inches just because he is so cute with his fluffy fur coat. It is thick and grows rapidly. |
Should I be worried about getting my Tucker groomed before he has all of his shots? |
I waited...... |
