Help with clipper and scissor purchase! We want to try and start grooming Crosley & Wrigley ourselves. We are paying over $100 + tip every 6 weeks or so and would really like to save that if we can! I'm so confused as to which clippers we should buy! There are so many types of Andis, how do you know which one you should get? Wrigley has more of a silky coat and we keep her in more of a puppy type cut. Crosley is a Yorkie Poo, so she has alot of curl in her hair. Wrigley tends to matt some, but Crosley doesn't. It sounds like Andis and Oster are two of the top brands, so any help on which model is best would be appreciated! Also the brand/type of scissors that you use? Also is it necessary to also purchase a smaller clipper like the Wahl Peanut or should one clipper do the trick? Sorry for so many questions, but we want to invest wisely and have no clue! Thanks for the help!! :confuse8: |
dont skimp you pay for what you get spend at least 50.00 dollars on a clippers make sure you can change the blade diff. blade lenghts are important use 10 to scoop the eyes stay away from the tuck up it tears easy any grooming scissors is fine you have only two dogs when its dull replace it |

The Wahl Peanut is WONDERFUL!! so great for feet and the butt and the ears... here is the clipper i have. http://grooming.petedge.com/Andis-22...CategoryId=340 i bought two combs- one 11mm and one is 13 mm. they do a nice short puppy cut. i spent 30 dollars on scissors at petsmart and they have been GREAT! |
I LOVE my Oster Golden A-5 two speed clipper~!!!!!!!!! It has been worth EVERY penny!! I got my first one 20 years ago and it still runs fine. I have a newer one(aboiut 3 years old) also. It is around $120.00 and comes with a #10 blade. You can buy other size blades depending on what clip you want to do. I use an 8 1/2 blade or a #10 for a close body clip and a 5/8 blade for ears, feet and butt. I also have scissors, I think they are pure paws? I geet all of my grooming equipment from Ryans Grooming supply. They are awsome and they sharpen and repair also. |

I see the clippers you have are NOT recommended for use in the USA, I wonder what the equivalent model for the USA would be. Thank you for the comb recommendations too! |

I will add those to the list of what we will need, thank you! I watched the videos you made, it looks like you have the round grooming table I saw on Petedge that is $30, correct? I wonder if that would be big enough for Crosley. She's around 15-16 lbs, do you think that would work for her? Wrigley is just around 5lbs, so I know we are fine there. Thanks again! |
It is because it is a 220 you need a 110 here in the US |
What is the advantage of single vs 2 speed? Also on the Andis, what is the difference with AG, AGC, AGP? I'm sorry, we just don't know anything at this point and I'm trying to do research and learn as much as we can! Wrigley is more of a nervous and shy dog, but yet the groomer always says she stays perfectly still and they have no trouble with her. Crosley on the other hand, she loves everybody, but apparently is much more difficult at the groomers! So I would want to get clippers that are quieter and will work faster to avoid stressing them or scaring them too much! |
Kudos to you for grooming yourself!! we've only recently decided the same thing and its going famously!!! i checked prices and clippers around,, ended up ordering from PetEdge, i got the $30 grooming table, (Love it),, the Oster Turbo 5,,two speed,, works GREAT!!! on all our dogs and our granddog,, i also got the comb set,, which is 7 different length combs,,and i went ahead and got a case (pink) to put it all in($15) and when i ordered my clipper,, i received an Oster trimmer,,,corded cordless,, for free!! a $50 value,,, we're most pleased,, and did ok with our groomings! now scissors,, i need a GOOD pair but havent done that yet,, gotta do that one too,, lol Best of Luck!!:animal-pa |

It's encouraging when I hear that it's going great like with your family! So another vote for Oster! That's great that you got the trimmer free! Are any of your dogs in the 15lbs range? Crosley is a Yorkie Poo and I'm wondering if that table would be big enough? Thanks! |
I have clipped my 5 to 8 lbs Yorkies and my 35 lb Skye Terrier with the Oster!! I dont need two clippers, I just change the blade size depending on what style I want to clip. I do have 2 clippers if I am doing alot of grooming that day and one gets hot, I just switch to the other one. Or if one is being serviced at Ryans, I have another one handy. Just remember, the higher the # of the blade, the closer the cut. I think a #40 is a surgical length cut(used by vets before surgery), and a #10 is an all around short body cut. The 5/8 blade is a small blade perfect for ears, butts and feet. I use this size on my show dogs ears and scissor the feet. The Whals Peanut is handy as it is rechargable and I can do a quick fix at the show. I also got my grooming table and ring-side table at Ryans. (No, I dont work there!LOL) Also my Oster stand dryer too. Good luck!!! Its just nicer to groom at home for you and your dog. |

well,, i got the nerve up to JUST DO IT!! after watching Marcerella02 (YT member here),, who has posted great videos of her grooming of her own Yorkie,, http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=117723 as for the grooming table,, i got the little round (pink) one,,which you can see in the videos she has posted as well,, and our Daisy is over 9 lbs..not fat,, just big Yorkie,, and there was room left,, I 'd think your 15lb-er would work on it too,, of course you can buy just a grooming arm if you have a table to use,, and of course, ,larger more expensive grooming tables as well Go for it!! You Can Do It!! ;-) |
