cutting hair yourself Has anyone bought a haircutting kit and done their babies themselves. I got a nice kit with a dvd and all for just under 100$...im going to try as its 50/cut and i go at least 4 times a year. We are also getting a new baby a morkie on sunday so it's gona be $$$ to take them to the groomer, and they HATE it.... Anyone have any tips on cutting...i can do the face, my little one doesnt mind the scissors, he actually rolls over and i give him a belly rub at the same time, im more worried about the buzzers. Thanks all! |
yes i groom at home... my biggest tip would be to be careful when you are doing aroung the belly.. even though you will have a comb on the clippers watch for the fold of skin around the legs and arms. and when you are shaving near the bum do NOT let the clippers actually touch the bum.... also when youare doing the hair between the pads of the feet just be extra careful you don't get a fold of skin.. i've been doing Layla myself for probably 6 months and have yet to cut either one of us :p so it can't be that hard :) |
I've been wanting to buy my own kit and table.. but I'm just so scared I'm going to butcher the cut up soo bad:rolleyes: I keep thinking "ok it's just hair it grows back" but I don't want my baby looking weird cause I messed up her hair |
I only took Murfee to the groomers once 4 years ago. It was a bad experience for both of us. Poor Murfee has had to endure my haircuts since then. We do ok...not great...and I have to admit that I have nicked him a few times :( poor little guy. The only problem I have is the pads of his feet. |
Parker has never been to groomer My daughter had us do a mohawk on him one time. We keep his hair pretty short - like a puppy cut - during the summer. |

grooming at home IS not hard.. honestly... i bought that pink mini table from petedge... a clipper and two comb lengths.. and it's jus tlike brushing her hair.. the comb limits the amount of fur that can be taken off.. our big issues is trimming around her face.. she HATES it.. but a little bit of treats can go a long way :) |

You can do it!! Just take off a little at a time. You can always cut more off, but you can't put it back. You may even decide the next day to trim a bit more here and there.:) |
Yes... I've been doing Meka's since I got her. Though, at 10 mo's now...Im in the process of taking her for her first grooming because I've never seen the "right way" to groom a Yorkie... So, I thought I'd take her in once and that should help me be able to keep it up properly.... Good luck :D |

I groom myself. I don't really cut the hair though...I'm trying to grow it long. I just shave the tips of the ears, trim around the paws, shave paw pads, and trim around sanitary areas. If hair starts looking scraggly I might trim it up a bit to even it out but that's it. |

My little girl will be eight months old in a few days and I would like to try my hand at home grooming also. What tools did everyone get to start out with? And , where is the best place to get them? |
I don't try to do it all at once. Some days we do good just getting the tangles out. I use clippers because I did cut Zoey oncewith sissors and she had to have stitches. When I first got the clippers I would lay them on the floor while we were playing, letting them run. They are pretty good now about sitting still. |

Marci.. next time you groom Layla... would you mind making a video??? I have been wanting to cut Kayah's hair myself.. and the body part.. ok I'll figure it out.. it's the face I'm terrifying of even attempting.. and Layla has the same face cut Kayah does.. So if you wouldn't mind... pretty please:D :) |

I groom Miss Ellie and the only thing I use is scissors (cheap ones) and newspaper.:) Her hair is crazy anyway (no part down middle/wavy), so whatever I do to it looks fine.:) The hardest part is her face length but I am not particular about it. She sits on my lap or on newspaper while I groom her. |
I wish i could :rolleyes: but am so paranoid of hurting them i cant get myself to do it ! |

Thanks for all the great info guys, I finally decided to just get er done and i cut Gizmo....man was it easy, he was great, he barely moved, well other than rolling over for a belly rub, but it actually helped. I did a pretty good job for the first time, missed some spots here and there, but hes not really going anywhere in all htis snow, so its ok. He looks so cute though, and im really glad i tried this...especially thanks for all the tips. I was gona try my new baby to get her used to it, but she HATED it...so i just did her bumb as it was getting a bit long under there, so i think she will be a bit harder than my other one, but hopefuly not as bad an experience as the groomers!! Thanks again! |
