Dog Parks I just got back from 2 different dog parks and for a while, my yorkie was the only one on the small dog side. There were lots of big dogs running around on the other side. I'm wondering if there are any dog parks in Westchester that get alot of small dogs 1 or 2 days a week. I like going to the dog parks because it gives Mckenna a chance to be off-leash for a while, she loves to run. Our yard is not entirely fenced in and it leads to a mostly wooded area, so I'm afraid to let her run around off leash. Am I the only small dog owner that likes going to the dog park a few days a week? Since I've been going for a while now, I've met some big dog owners that come every day at the same time, which is nice. I'm curious if anyone here at YorkieTalk goes to any dog parks and what your experiences have been. |
We have know local dog parks by me. But I just heard that they have been approved to build one about 20 minutes away!:) I am looking forward to that! |
I took Kalina to our dog park 2x and both times it was miserable for her. She sat between my legs and her eyes were just begging me to pick her up and get her the heck out of there. She is usually very sociable and even plays with our next-door Boxer, but this was horrible. I have found that a lot of the people at dog parks also think that there is no need to discipline their dogs. One dog insisted on humping Kalina the entire time and its owner, a doctor, sat on a bench on her cell phone the entire time and ignored her dog. One little dog there was attacked and bitten by a min-pin just as I arrived and the owner said "He's just showing a natural dominance, it doesn't mean anything". My experience was so bad that I won't subject her to that place again. I would love to have a small, informal meet-up with other Yorkies though. Hope your experiences are better. |
I don't have one near me but I wouldn't take my babies even if I did because I have heard too many horror stories like the one above. I'm sure there are some who love them though. |
I'm sorry to hear of your bad experiences. I've never had a bad experience at a dog park, but it's probably because there are never more than 3 dogs on the small dog side at any one time. All Mckenna does is run back and forth along the fence watching the big dogs (always 10-12 dogs at one time) on the other side of the fence. I would love a yorkie meetup around where I live. There's a yorkie meetup in NYC, but sometimes it's just not convenient for me to get there and also they charge a monthly fee even if you can't get to events. |
Just wanted to add that the dog park I mentioned above is being sued...or at least an owner is being sued, not sure of the specifics. What happened is a big dog grabbed a little dog by the throat and shook him to death. I found this out AFTER my last visit. |

The dog park i go to is fun. Most of the owners are smart and keep an eye on their dogs. Some, mostly the bigger dogs, get into fights but the owners quickly break them up and leave if necessary. Since most of the owners are smart if we do get a bad one in that doesn't watch their dog who's being obnoxious we let them know :D |

The park we go to have a separate area for small and large dogs. Mr. Biggs and I try to go every Friday, but if we miss, we try to make up for the saturday :) I absolutely love taking him and I know he looks forward to it. We're always there for at least an hour.. and since the weather is cooling, we'll probably be going more on the weekends now :thumbup: Whenever we go it's always the same group of people with a few newbies thrown in. Most of the other people live around the area so they go mist every afternoon. It's a really fun place to bring your dog to socialize, especially when they're stuck in the house all day during the week. We might be a little biased though, since Mr. Biggs was asked to be their November Dog of the Month :D |
It really depends on the people, since there is not real dog park authority to regulate and monitor activity, owners must take it upon themselves. At the park we go to, Chip has his regular group of friends and all their owners are on top of cleaning up poop, controlling behaviour, etc. The park rules state if someones dog starts a fight, or is aggressive you need to tell them to leave, if they don't you can call the police. It's alot easier on the small dog side because there are way less fights than on the big dog side,and the big dog owners are more reluctant to remove their dogs. Eventhough the sign on the small dog side says 25lbs and under most of the dogs are at least 10lbs+, with a few hovering over 25lbs. Last week a lady with a smaller yorkie came and was surprised there weren't any other dogs her size. The little yorkie who was actually 9yrs. old, was overwhelmed with all the running and wrestling activity going on. I told her about the yorkie meetups, which would probably be a better socializing choice for her dog since there would be others her size. |
I went to the park last Sunday, and it was the first time I've ever been. Pepper used to go to doggy daycare earlier and loves (most) dogs, but I always avoided parks because there were a lot of big dogs... The one I went to - I saw a few small dogs, in that 2 Yorkies! - was in Bk Hights, close to the Promenade, but Pepper didn't like it... He was trying to hide between my legs and jump up for me to pick him up. He didn't like the big wood chips either... |

Alley Pond Park I Go To Alley Pond Park With Sammy Several Times A Week. They Have Nice Paths To Walk On. I Have Not Had Any Problems With Dog Owners. Sammy Does Not Bother With Any Dogs, Not Social, But I Am Trying. |
my daughter has two small dogs and goes to a dog park quite a bit, she lives in West NY, NJ.....I will ask her what the name of the park is. |
