It's WRONG - there are rules and everyone has to follow them....you have to follow airline procedure and to encourage someone to do this is also wrong.

I often THOUGHT about this b/c the fee's are overpriced, not to mention the pet carrier counts as a carry on!! TO ME, the airlines are getting double paid for those of us who do choose to follow the rules!!!
YOU do have to think about "what if", is it worth the $200 to ruin your vacation, delay your flight, and so on.....

I just look at it as if i had a kid and wanted them with me, you would pay for them to be with you no matter the cost....;)

Honestly, I have to agree with those that think that the airlines completely rip us off. I followed all the rules, I made a reservation way ahead of time, I took him to the vet to get the health certificate ($80), I paid for his flight ($100 each way), I bought an airplane approved carrier (KW Alex for more than $100), I gave up my carry on so I had to put my own personal items in my family's bags so we wouldn't have to pay extra to check a bag and for what? Kaji had to be in the bag for 4 hours with no food, water, or a break because the rules state the pet carrier must be under the seat AT ALL TIMES, and what's worse, NO ONE CARED! When I checked him in no one asked to see the dog, the carrier, his health certificate or checked his weight since on the phone they made a really big deal about weight limits. TSA were the only ones that saw my dog because I carried him through the metal detectors after I striped him naked of all clothes and his tags. They didn't even make a big deal either, they told me how cute he was and asked questions about him. The people at the gate couldn't have cared less and I wasn't hiding him at all. He was out playing ball with my fam and me in a corner away from all the other passengers. He was quiet and well behaved. I did break the bag under the seat rule. He sat on my lap during the flight, only being in his carrier for take off and landing. I was definitely surprised that LAX would be so relaxed about a dog, security was tight, but they didn't flinch over a dog. Memphis was the same, they confiscated my hair serum and playfully joked about confiscating my pup because he was just too cute.

BUT, I would never sneak him on. My conscience wouldn't let me sleep at night and I would look so guilty that the TSA people would probably arrest me for looking suspicious. I don't feel bad for having him sit in my lap because I paid good money for him to be on that plane. He didn't bother anyone, he never barked, I wasn't about to let him roam up and down the aisle, and he enjoyed looking out the window, and the biggest part was NO ONE CARED! The other passengers weren't bothered by him at all. That would be the only rule I would break.

I don't like that they charge either, but that is not the point. The airlines are entitled to their rules and if people don't like them, then I think they should drive.

As for sitting in your lap...that is done all of the time on flights! But...again, if you think four hours is too long for a pup to sit in a carrier, drive.

BUT...bottom line, there is NO sneaking a pup on an airplane these days...don't care what anyone says. It just does not happen.

I don't get your point. I paid, and will continue to pay if I ever have to take another flight. I do think it would be stealing to just take a pup, which is why my conscience would never ever let me do something like that. They do charge a crazy price though and demand a lot and then not bother to check. I understand the airlines are entitled to do whatever they want. Maybe I just had the strangest flight experience where no one cared that I had a dog with me. Maybe it was because it was the holidays, I don't know. If the fare was reasonable, I wouldn't of complained.

This is bit of an old thread but came across it my mistake and cant help myself reply.

I have flown 4 times from NY return with my dog - a boston terrier and she sits in her dog bag during the two hour flight. After my first initial flight where I paid $250 for the round trip for her and no one checked or bothered to do anything, I have for the last 3 times flown with her for free as airlines just rip people off. I take her on through security who dont give a crap about you carrying a dog through the xray with me, i take her on the flight who dont check or really care. So i harm no one's so called `freedom` by doing this. some of the replies to this thread are really rediculous.

Maybe i got away with it as I'm british and cheeky but there is no way i am travelling with my dog and she has to pay almost as much as me and she HAS to sit in her bag under the seat in front. if she got her own seat i wouldnt mind. but of course the looks i got when i asked that... i mean as if i was serious about her getting a seat. so i say screw the airline and screw the people that think its criminal. it really isnt. {Removed sentence}

you pay over priced charges for seats, then you have to pay for baggage, pay for drinks and food. so do you not see this is the airlines way of making you pay for another thing...

next thing you are being charged to use the washroom or breathing in the airline oxygen. and some of you here will pay it just thinking `oh thats the way it is`...

i say take your dog on. dont make a fuss about it. dont pay.
if all else fails act like a dumb british tourist if they do ever catch you. you will be surprised what i have got away with over the years.

Surely, you jest?????????!!!!!!! OMG!!!! I am sorry....I am an old woman, and I guess I just have an entirely different understanding of "following rules and laws". I guess I am a prude...I have never wanted to nor done, sneaking ANYTHING, ANYPLACE!!! If I cant afford to go someplace, I dont go! If I cant afford to bring my dog, I dont go! I dont understand the desire to essentially steal from a person offering a service...which in MY mind, when you gate run, or go in exits, pay for one movie and then scurry from each show inside those multi cenema movie houses watching 3-5 shows for the price of one movie, triple up in a single hotel room, sneak a dog into a NO PET hotel, try to stow-a-way a dog or kid on a plane or ship or bus, shop lift, smuggle illegal animals or food thru customs....anything to avoid paying a fee or price for the service someone is providing you, just seems like stealing to me. I figure if I need to sneak or hide or lie about something, it is WRONG....Not only do I demand more integrity than that for myself, I "answer to a higher authority".....

You know lynzy, I am NOT really that old, (63), but I certainly do FEEL that way....I come from entirely different socially acceptable behavior and what is expected of people.....you follow the rules, you pay your bills, you work hard and pay your way, you treat people like you want to be treated....just because YOU think a tube of lipstick costs too much, you are not ENTITLED to steal it! Just because you think airlines are screwing you to the wall wth all the fees and prices, that does NOT entitle you to steal your fare or the fare of your dog....just because YOU think movie ticket prices are way over priced, does not entitle you to sneak around in the theater, going from movie to movie, getting 5 movies for the price of one....I came from a generation that considers that stealing....and I figure if I am going to break that Commandment, "Thou shalt NOT steal", and risk going to Hell, it is going to be for a WHOLE lot more than the cost of a plane ticket, a movie, or a tube of lipstick! No, I have never hidden food/drink and sneaked it in anywhere...against the rules! If there is a sign that says, Do not sneak food or drink in", then I wouldnt do it! Never have! I have always thought that was all part of "going to the movies"....getting the popcorn and candy and drink from the concession stand! When I can no longer afford to pay for that, or when it gets to the point that I feel incensed over it, I either wont go to the movies any more, or I do without snacks at the movie...I will go to a drive in afterwards! I try real hard to be "righteous"...just good sense of ethics, integrity, and moral values, instilled by principled, strict, well meaning parents. I do curse like a sailor when made angry....I have been known, when much younger, to drink too much, get 10 feet tall, bullet-proof and invisable, and I have even gone to medium trying to contact momma after she died (this is supposedly a sin)...but sneaking food to avoid paying at the consession stand?....nope, never.

I also think that the fee they charge is way to much, often more than my ticket. And the posters that say that they wind up having to give up a carry on bag is correct. Plus they allow children to a certain age to sit on your lap for free so what is the differnce. I believe the true reason they charge so much is they really don't want it to get out of hand, if it was free there might be a lot of dogs flying that don't do so now and a lot of non dog loving passengers would probably not like that, so in a way I get it.

Long before 911 I flew every week for business and I snuck my yorkie on all most every week, and if I wanted to I could still do it now, because TSA does not look to see if a pet is on your ticket. I don't do it because it is not worth the hassle if I got stopped and I don't travel every week. I also don't see it as stealing because lap sitting kids fly free and with most airlines, carry ons are free. Airlines nickle and dime you to death now, can't even get a lousy bag of peanuts without having to use your credit card.

I am fairly certain that it is illegal to sneak a pet on an airplane. My guess is that the person would have to not only pay for the pet, but also be fined...perhaps even charged with a federal offense. I don't know....
All I know is that $150 is not worth me making a fool of myself should I get caught.

I agree. TSA has a lot of authority nowadays. I wouldnt risk being grounded just cause i didnt want to pay 150$ .

And I'm just curious to the person who said they could sneak a dog on board. Do you plan on sticking your dog under the baggage scanner? :rolleyes:

We actually flew not long after that post. Well when we made the reservations and told them we were traveling w/ our dog (NOW its 2), like always you to go to the counter to check in. I set the carrier on the ground and let them do their thing w/ our check –ins.. got our tickets and headed towards the gate.

Like always, take Dud out of the carrier and let the bag go through..Boarded and took flight.
I asked Dh what they charged him for Dud….He said that they didn't ask for payment and thought we paid when we made reservations. I told him they note it when i made reservations.
We laughed after I told him ‘no”, that’s why we have to check in at the counter, LOL

As we were getting off the plane and I was carrying the bag like I always do, in my arms in front of me, ( so the bag it’s being knocked all over the place) the flight attendants we goo-gooing and ga-gaing over the fact they had a cute puppy on board and wanted to pet him….

Well the flight back home, we experienced the same chain of events.

AND since then I just think of (Dud and Dex) as my “one bag carry on”. We have probably taken 20 flights since, we are taking another one over Labor Day.
I have never tried to “hide” them, sneak them on or anything. I think all the staff just consider them my carry on as we do. Yes, we pay for our check-in’s, we are allowed a carry on that fit under the seat, that’s exactly what they do.

OP asked for tip: on one of those flights, we were relocated b/c we had the boys and you cannot sit in an emergency exit row w/ them. The middle seat is ‘typically” bigger for your “carry on”, and never sneak or hide your pets on board.

As I said: Not worth it to me to be embarrassed. I don't think that IF they catch someone they will accept any excuses.

lots of people really don't know there is a charge and depending on the airline the fee is $125.00 or $150.00 and that is just one way so it's really $250.00 to $300.00 to travel with your pet. Don't you think that is an excessive fee for what is really just carry on luggage.

I pay what is asked for things. It is not my place to argue their fees. Just because I don't like it, I am not going to sneak on a plane. I have a choice. If I don't want to pay the fee, I should not be flying with my pup.

Look at it this way: Gas is much more than I like right now...but you won't catch me out siphoning gas. It is what it is.
