Restaurants This may be a really dumb question but we are thinking of taking our puppy with us when we go to my Mom's this summer. What do you guys do when you stop to eat at a restaurant. I understand that dogs are not allowed in most restaurants unless perhaps they have a patio. Do you just eat fast food? Is there any way of keeping a carrier cool while it is in the vehicle? We can usually see the vehicle from inside most restaurants but there is still the issue of the vehicle getting too hot inside. Thanks for any advice you might have. |
We usually frequent resturants with patios. Unless you have a very well behaved and quiet pup...you could place in a carrier and sneak in. I wouldn't under any circumstances leave one in a vehicle in the summer. Ever. |
PICNIC is what we do :D |

we take Béatrice in whenever we go to a restaurant enroute to Québec City from Montréal.We always put her in her bag and keep it zipped, she can still see through the mesh.To date she has been perfectly quiet, just a few whimpers when we are getting ready to leave the restaurant. We haven't tied taking the 2 of them together yet,but we are planning a trip to my home in Nova Scotia this August.By then Sébastien should be pretty good to take in restaurants in the bag with his sister. We just have to get a bigger bag,so we can put the 2 in 1. |
Pretty much, if we are traveling with the dogs our stops are very limited. We generally only eat fast food. 9 times out of 10, its' drive-through too. If it's a nice cool day, we may leave them in the vehicle while we quickly run in. |
I've never been one in to sneaking a dog in. You could take 2 sets of keys for the car, leave it running while you're going to go in to the restaurant. I wouldn't leave mine out there for too long though. When we travel 800 miles to Illinois to visit my Mom, we go through drive thrus, then pull over and eat. Then when we're visiting, we leave the dogs at my Moms house |
Know the state laws where you will be driving. Some states such as Arizona have a law against leaving a pet in a car any time of year. We have had our Yorkie to California, Arkansas and Montana. We eat fast food sometimes but sometimes we take her in the restaurant with us in her carry bag. She is very quiet usually just lays down and sleeps. I keep the bag on the floor under the table and when we walk in and out I put a sweater over the top and opening, and put the screen side next to me. In summer I get cold in some air conditioned places so I carry a sweater all the time. Booths work well you can put the bag between your feet and the wall with the screen side facing the wall. When we get in the car I give her a tid bit of our dinner for being a good girl while we ate. Nobody even notices her. |
When driving from NorCal to SoCal I bring Genghis in his carrier usually to fast food, quick stops. Usually they don't care. Patios are great, but sometimes they still don't allow pups on there, it's up to the restaurant. Some restaurants let you bring in the pup if the carrier is fully closed. Now that it's warmer there are a lot more options. I hear in Seattle there are many dog friendly restaurants. I've never been there before, but it makes me want to go. |

"YES. there are dogs everywhere. people have them on leashes and in backpacks and in the dog bags. they also leash them up outside. they also had their dogs playing in the fountains today. and cody SWEARS that he saw a cat with a hat on. LOL. ***then he just said "or maybe it was a ferret..."" |
I asked if the dogs were allowed in the restaurants in Seattle and here is the reply. "yup. people put them in the bags and they are good to go." |
Well I guess I will look into seattle for the next vacation for sure. However I'm not sure what to do there other than take Genghis everywhere :) |
I saw an adult English Bulldog the other day while walking my baby outside. With a "booster" outside of a restaurant window, it had its shoulders upwards planted on the inside part of the window sill (I couldn't tell if he actually was able to reach the dining table) of an otherwise classy restaurant. The owner(s) must have been dining inside and had the window pulled up/open with their dog draping on the sill. It was soooo cute. The dog had his harness on and I didn't note it, but it was likely tied outside. I guess this technically met the health board regulation standards in keeping the animals outside... albeit, not just with one foot in the proverbial door, but instead with "two" feet in the literal "window". LOL. I take mine in with me and give her some food/treats before zipping it up and then once we're out, she pops her head right out and waits expectantly for more yummies. After getting her treat for being a good girl, only then will she hop out of her bag. :) |
leave the puppy at home when you go to the resturant can you not leave the puppy at mothers home? take a kennel with you they have fold down kennels you could take along do not leave a dog or puppy in a vehicle most places with food do not cannot allow dogs per health dep. rules |
I have an automatic start on my car so I set the air conditioning and sit at a window and restart it when it goes of so she stays cool. We usually aren't more than half an hour so I only have to restart it maybe twice. |
I probably want attempt to bring Jackson to ANY restaurant. He's too much of a begger. Plus, he's huge at 13 pounds and I do not wanna be carrying him around, lol |
There is a lot of dog being stolen from people car so you are going to have to eat fast food or make a lunch. |
If you choose to leave your dog in the car with it running, depending on your destination (where your mother is located), check to see city bylaws in regards to emissions--unless you have a solar powered a/c that Toyota had talked about creating. Since several years back, with the whole global warming concern, in my town, we have a "3-minute idle" law. They were even talking about border crossings requiring the cars lining up to turn their engines off. Besides having the A/C up, hope you also include a warm blanket and/or a heating pad because I know my girl gets chilled easily. ;) If you're sitting by a window and parked your car right in front of it, you will be able to monitor/guard your little one. :) |
1 Attachment(s) Fort Myers Beach has 2 bars/restaurants that are dog friendly....so we go there alot. It's great cause they are right on the water. Very Beautiful. One is called Bonita Bill's and the other is called The Parrot. Here's a pic of Pasquale enjoying himself at Bonita Bill's. Attachment 273805 |
We toss two beach chairs in the trunk and a large blanket, pack as much as we can into a cooler and supplement with stops at fast food restaurants. We arent beyond picnicing in the grass island of an Arby's drive through...but try to find slightly more pleasant stops.;) |
I dont think I could take a dog into a restaurant at all. I think its just a respect thing for other people who are eating. Not everyone is a dog lover and lots of people think dogs are dirty & some people are highly allergic. My mother has severe asthma attacks within minutes of being in the same room with dogs (even with no direct contact). I think the best thing to do would be to picnic, fast food (eat in the car) or eat at a sonic where you can sit outside. If you want a hot meal on the road, maybe you can order room service at the hotel your staying at. |
Yorkies are one of the hypo-allergenic dogs; they also don't shed. So folks who are normally allergic to dogs, aren't to Yorkies. That aside, fast food places are a good way - I've even asked them for an uncooked (raw) hamburger for the dogs so they can eat, too. And then there are the places with patios... And you're not limited to "fast food", either: Chili's, Appleby's, Outback and similar places all have "call ahead" places for take-out; just call them (or go up to the window and order) and you can have REAL food, too. Bella's relatively small, only 4 lbs. Puddie's a porker at 7.5 lbs. Either one will ride in a carrier purse, but Bella gets protective and barks if someone gets too close to me  :). So it would be difficult to sneak one in to a restaurant. |
If you decide to leave her in the car with it running, check the doors to see if they will lock. We have a new car and the doors won't lock from the outside when it is running. |
