Shipping my puppy as cargo??? My Mother-in-law just bought me a little boy Yorkie puppy! Originally the plan for him to fly with my Dad out here as a carry-on but my dad's business trip has been canceled until late Summer. My in-laws live 3,500 miles away, and my family live 3,200 miles away, so driving to pick him up is not an option. Now the trouble is that the only choice we have is to ship him as cargo...and I feel HORRIBLE just thinking about doing that! Has anyone here shipped their baby as cargo? If so, what airline did you use and was it a bad experience? Any additional trips about flying your pet? Thank you! |
How about picking him up by flying into the state that he's in? You can then bring him onto the plane with you ... much better than cargo. |
How old/big is he? |
I have contact information for a stewardess for Delta who does carry on transport. She's a member of the Maltese forum I belong to and several people have used her service and been very happy with it. If you'd like her contact information, pm me. |
Flying in to pick him won't be an option for us, due to paying over $1500 last month to fly home... He's very young; 10 weeks and he's also very small. |
I have had both my babies shipped to me, one from Missouri, other from Texas. Had no problems. I don't recommend if there is another option, but both dogs arrived safe and sound. |
I'm so glad to hear that! I've heard horror stories about pets getting injured or even killed during flights! If you don't mind my asking, what airline did you use? So far Delta is the only one I've found who will fly dogs from Memphis to Seattle. |

I really think dogs getting injured or killed is extremely rare. I am sure they do there best to take care of the animals, esp. the tiny yorkies. |

Found this on original breeders webpage - The total cost for shipping on American Airlines or Continental will be $225. Delta, Northwest, and Midwest Express are other airlines that can be used but they are usually a little more expensive. I will only ship within the United States. |
my bentley came to me from FL via delta .... his breeder would only use delta and said they were the best as far as watching out for the furbabies ... when he got to texas and i took him out of his crate, he was fine and happy to be home :D |

Cost me $290 for the shipping. She was well cared for and mind you she is a tiny girl of 1lb 14 ozs. |
I got Harley last month from Michigan. He was shipped in cargo, on Northwest. They charged me according to his crate size, he is 15lbs. So his crate would most likely be larger than for a puppy. The total for the ticket with taxes came to $180. He arrived safe and sound, apparently there were alot of dogs in cargo on his flight. The only thing I was really worried about was his flight kept being delayed. |

Hi... I had a toy poodle flown to me in NY from Oregon at 16 weeks old. She was flown Continental Quick Pack Service... this way the animals are driven right out to the tarmac and are the last ones on, so they dont sit around on the plane and then they are the first ones off. Have your mom put some ice cubes in the crate this way if all the water is dumped out there is still something left to lick. Good Luck. Elissa |
Sorry cant help with the flying, but congrats, hoping things work out ok for you. |

Thank you all for your advice! I'll be sure to let everyone know how it turns out! I'll be praying :) |
You could also ask if the breeder would put a heated disc in the crate for the trip. |
Where would we find a heated disc? Are there any safety hazards associated with using one of those on a flight? My Mother-in-law will be the one shipping him, so I am try to make as easy on her as possible by getting all the information lined out. |
I've been reading all the threads on here about shipping puppies as cargo, and now I think I'm more worried than I was to begin with! His flight will be a little over eight hours at best :( . I'm going to have NutriCal in hand when we pick him up and also plan on having food for him in our SUV. I hope that it will be ok. I'm worried... |
We just shipped our puppy Continental a couple of weeks ago and it was the first time we have ever shipped. I was worried sick!! They have temp controlled area that they keep them in at all times so you don't have to worry if it's too cold or hot. I could even track her online to see where she was at all times. Everything went great!! One thing they didn't tell us until we got there was that they only insure up to $1200. Good luck with your pup! Oh...one more thing we froze her water with a little kyro syrup in it to so she had something the whole time and it wouldn't all spill out. |
I think my baby is coming continental, but I am very worried because they have to switch planes in Dallas  I am going to not think about it because it is making my stomach sick. Please do not tell me any horror storys about plane switching at this point. I will just pray for God to watch over her. |

Wow! Continental sounds like they do an amazing job! Unfortunately, they do not ship from any of the areas near my in-laws...so Delta it is! I hope Delta is as good with pets as Continental! I'm glad to hear the switch went well, my puppy will have one in Atlanta. Mojo- I COMPLETELY relate! I'll keep your baby in my prayers! Wrenee4-The water with Kyro syrup is a great idea! And I totally forgot that you can insure cargo! Thanks :) |
Our baby Maltese was shipped to us from Seoul, South Korea, my girlfriend has a house there and was a present from her mom. He made home safely though he was a bit scared at first. |

about 14 hours. Korean Air took amazing care of our baby. |
Wow! That is awesome! |
They will not allow the heated disks to be in the crates for Delta. I asked already! :) Nothing, but a blanket or shredded paper is what they told me. That is why I drove 2 1/2 hours one way to ship my girl. |
