Would you please keep my husband in your thoughts/prayers please?
 

My darling hubby of nearly 15 years (he is 35) has not been too well recently..Back in 2002 he was admitted to hospital and kept in for 2 weeks with a ridiculously low blood count (6.2) and he was bleeding from his bowel. He had 5 blood transfusions, a Sigmoidoscopy and a Colonoscopy..oddly they never did find out what happened and with the blood Transfusions and Iron tablets, his blood count began to creep back up again and they let him come home...we have wondered ever since what it could have been..:confused:
In the last few months he has started to feel tired and run down again..his blood count is down again (was 10.9 but now gone up to 12.6) so not anywhere near as low as it was 7 years ago!..and there are no visible signs of bleeding this time. He has had regular bouts of sickness, last time was a week ago and he was violently sick! and has been losing weight..about a stone and a half since christmas..although some of this weight can be accounted for as he is eating more healthily and has cut down on alcohol. The doctor has put him on Iron tablets again (the reason his blood count has gone up a bit) and told my husband that he is really not happy with him..he took blood (results came back inconclusive) and will also test him for Celiac disease (those results not back yet) In the meantime my hubby has had a back problem which has recently been looked into and he had an MRI scan and went in for the results last week..his back is no worse but it showed that he has a large spleen:confused:..now his doctor is really NOT happy, as along with other symptoms like the weight loss, anemia, immature red blood cells, low white blood count, and occasional night sweats, he suspects possible Lymphoma and is sending him for an ultrasound of his spleen...i'm hoping this will be as soon as possible as naturally we are both worried sick..it has been a very emotional and tiring few days, the waiting is torture..we just want to know what the heck is going on so we can get on and deal with it. Its all such a mystery..especially if its connected to what happened 7 years ago. I'm hoping and praying that its not serious and its maybe an infection of some sort .

Kerry...has your husband been tested for Crone's disease? You can check out the symptoms on webmd. What your husband is going through sounds very similar to Crone's and it goes into remission...something like stress or a virus can trigger an outbreak so it would make sense that he's been fine for 7 years and now he's sick again. If it is Crone's it can be treated but the earlier you catch it the better off you are.

Your poor husband! I am sending out prayers that he gets better soon.

FYI, I have Crohn's disease, and his symptoms don't really sound like traditional Crohn's to me, but anything is possible! The weight loss and the bowel bleeding, alone with anemia, are all classic Crohn's, but the spleen issue is not. Also, white blood cell counts are generally high with Crohn's, not low, due to systemic inflammation. Also, going 7 years between flare-ups, while not impossible, is highly unlikely, IMO.

Anyway, I hope they figure out what is wrong with him, and that it isn't anything too serious.

Thankyou for asking...the last 2 days or so we have both been very stressed and tearful:(...but today he is looking much brighter...colour in his cheeks and upbeat about things...we will try to remain positive..:thumbup:

I wanted to add 2 things:

1) The only way to conclusively diagnose lymphoma is through a biopsy. Does your husband have any swollen lymph nodes? If so, his doctor should do a biopsy ASAP.

2) My best friend survived lymphoma, and has been perfectly healthy for about 5 years. There are 2 types, but both have high survival rates. So even if the worst comes true, keep your hopes high because many, many people live with and recover from lymphoma. :)

No..he hasn't..I myself have suspected something like this..we asked for the celiac test which has yet to come back...so maybe we should ask for a Crohns test too then...Thanks for your response.:)

Has his doctor done another colonoscopy after the one 7 years ago? A colonoscopy, along with biopsies of the intestines, is pretty much the only way to conclusively diagnose Crohn's. It is hard to diagnose. A colonoscopy would likely reveal bleeding sores or ulcers inside the intestines and/or colon. If he hasn't had one in 7 years, it's definitely worth requesting another one!

Also, if you start reading online about Crohn's, you may end up horrified. But lots of people, myself included, live very happy, normal lives! So don't let the internet scare you!

The doctor has referred him to a specialist for a Sigmoidoscopy & Colonoscopy and also to a haematologist for a blood screen and Ultrasound:thumbup:
And..yes..I know that reading up on the internet is NOT the best idea! we have done a little too much of that the last couple of days!:rolleyes:

Oh Kerry i am so sorry that you and your husband and family are going through such a worrying time at the moment.

I am hoping and praying for you all, to help you cope and get through this difficult time in your lives. Sometimes the worst part is the not knowing what the trouble is - because even though we try not to we - ALWAYS THINK IT'S SERIOUS.

I am sure it will be something easily treatable, that will allow you all to stop the worrying and stress you are experiencing.

I have not been around myself for a while, trouble with internet, and really busy with family stuff as usual.

You might also want to ask about the little camera that you swallow...it's about the size of a vitamin. You wear a transmitter all day while the camera takes pictures of your small intestine and colon. I just had this done and it was the only way they found the damage I had...endoscope nor colonoscopy could go that far but the camera can go all the way through.

Oh Thankyou! we will ask about this! I never heard of this before?! wasn't it a bit strange swallowing something like that? and...how did you find it afterwards? dare I ask!?:blush08::p

Everything was fine...it's not hard to swallow and I didn't even know it was there...or that is left ;) They do tell you to stay away from other people who are having the same test done because it can affect your recording and also to stay away from things like MRI machines until you know the camera has 'passed'. If you're unsure whether or not it passed you can have an x-ray done to see if it's gone.

They can't control the camera or take biopsies with this test but they can see damage the other tests can't see.

Kerry, please add my prayers to all the others going up for your husband. I pray that you'll get the answers to what's going on with him and that there will be a simple cure for what ails him. God bless you both - hang in there!

We are both in quite good spirits today...Hubby is eating well and has a good apetite..he managed a good plateful of bangers and mash with cabbage tonight!
He was last weighed at the doctors a week ago and weighed himself today and has lost another 1lb!:confused: but the main thing is his spirits are high and his apetite is good.:thumbup: Just wish they would hurry up and let us know when his tests are scheduled for.

I'm so sorry your both going thru such a terrible time. Try to stay positive and pray together. I will pray for your husbands speedy recovery, and pray it isn't anything really life threatning. Warm hugs to you both.

Just thought I would update you..My hubby has a consultation at the Haematology dept at our local hospital tomorrow morning (mon)..they will be doing a Bone Marrow Biopsy too. Naturally we are both very anxious about it all and just want all the answers now. its a very worrying time.:(
