when thinking of yorkie # 2 I have a five month old right now and just loving him to death. Those of you who have two, would it be better to get another boy or girl when the time is right? thanks |

I have one of each...Oliver was my first and when he was a year old we got Brooklyn (girl)...they get along wonderfully....always have! We also have a boy maltese that we got when Brooklyn was a year and all of them get along wonderfully.....i think either sex would be okay....but if you have a boy it might be fun for you to experience a girl or vice versa! Hi, I always recommend getting a boy if you have a girl already. (I really don't recommend 2 girls together but every dog has it's own personality and some do well with with another girl.) However since you already have a boy you could choose either another boy (as long as both are neutered) or adopt a girl. I would look for a puppy with a complimentary personality to get along with your current dog. Work with the breeder to find a puppy that will get along well with your boy. I had Charlie first and when he was almost 2, I got Natalie who is almost 1. I love having two furbabys. charlie seems happier now that he has another furbaby to play with. I always wanted a girl and a boy. |
I have raised unrelated boys together and they were bonded to each other very closely and we never had any trouble. I have also raised girls together with no problems. All of mine have been spayed and neutered though and I think that helps. That way the boys won't want to mark and the girls stay sweet I think. Yah, it's cute to have a boy and a girl but it doesn't have to be that way. Personally what I believe it all boils down to is their temperment and what works for you and your family. Some dogs will accept any new dog with no trouble and others won't accept any. Socialize your baby young and you'll have a better chance of adding a new puppy when you are ready. Throw out the preconceived notions and find a puppy that gets along well with your puppy and your family...that's what works best :) |
thanks for the info everyone well now I guess I will just start looking. I am praying maybe that I will find a little one that needs a home. I think it would be good for Winston. I do not believe the cats will ever adjust to him. They are only 2 but he moves around to much. We always had larger dogs, (old english was our last one) this little guy sure can move. |
My opinion is get a girl if you already have a boy. Two boys were not a good mix for me. I probably should have gotten both neutered immediately. I had not really planned on another male, but wound up with one puppy left from a litter. So, I decided to add him to the family. It did not work. He was the sweetest puppy ever but my first male did not like adding another male. They started trying to out-mark each other IN the house and out. They fought and never meshed. I finally went back to my original plan of finding him a good home for all our sakes. I have seen others with 2 males that get along great. The ones that seem to have the most luck with multiple males, are those that get them neutered early. So, I guess either way, you can make it work -- just wanted you to know the down side. |
new yorkie I have two boys and two girls...the girl dogs will get into it every once and awhile (both were obtained as puppies)..the boys get along fine, obtained as adults...(not all yorkies) you can try the dog park and see which sex of dog yours prefers...or perhaps a friend from here that lives near you....play date... roxanne |
Two yorkies is an awesome idea, I too am feeling the same longing for another (have been for a while, lol) I figure I'll wait until I move next year, it'll put Rizzo at just about 2 and he should be 100% trained (potty wise) by then. I think I'll have to get another boy though, I wanted to do the boy/girl thing, but Rizzo always seems more aggressive around the ladies, and more of a sweetie to his fellow males... Strange considering he hasn't been fixed yet (this month is his month, poor fellow) So I recommend letting him play with other dogs to see which of the sexs he prefers :D Good luck! |
2 puppies I wanted originally to get two puppies....I have Izzy my female now and wanted to get a male because the majority of people with Yorkies told me that they get along better but I think 2 females at this point is a better idea for me. I don't have room for anymore until we close in our back porch. So I've decided to do that, get a female while they are young so they can grow up together and play. I admire all of your husbands having more than 2!!! lol mine would nut up if he had to hear a lot of barking. He has Grave's disease so he hasn't got the patience. I have two girls (unrealted) sophie 8 mo, Lucie 4 mos, they get along really well and love to play. I wouldnt hesitate to get two girls. |
I got my first 2 12 days apart. They are both girls. One is a Shorkie the other a lc Chihuahua. |

This will probably sound pretty negative, but I want to be honest. I would wait to make sure the Yorkie you have now does not have any bad habits such as barking and not "going" where he/she is suppose to before getting another. They do tend to pick up each others habits and it just compounds the problem. They are fun to watch play together, but it can also be more trouble than you really want. |
