Nope, no cats....one monkey is enough for me right now. She's a hand full and a half! She just has one spot on her side about the size of a nickle. It just looks like a bald spot. In the beginning there was a scab there as well but we used neosporin every day for a week and this killed the infection and got rid of the scab. Ringworm is not actually a worm, it is a fungus similar to athletes foot. |
here's a website on ringworm... http://www.kidshealth.org/teen/infec.../ringworm.html |
Oh my god oh my god that looks terrible and painful on animals. How do animals get that, is there a cure? |
She doesnt seem to be affected by it at all. The only time she tries to itch is when I'm putting creams on her or from the excessive shampooing! Dry skin. Other than that shes playing and being her normal happy self. She actually had it when I bought her last August. It could take weeks for it to show up even if the dog has the fungus already. I noticed it exactly 7 days after I bought her so she definately had it from before I got her. Ive heard that its big in puppy mills and therefore pet stores. |
About a cure... There are shampoos, topical ointments and oral antifungal meds. We have tried all of the above the last time she had it and now we are trying a shampoo and an over the counter lamisil which is primarily used for athletes foot but the fungus is the same as the one that causes ring worm. Hope that gave you some insight and always examine your dog for any bald spots. They can pick it up anywhere, especially if the ground is wet and dark, fungus can grow. Also from being in contact with other dogs that have it even if it isnt showing on their body yet. |
Has the Malaseb shampoo help at all? |
We used tea tree oil to get rid of ringworm -- it worked and never returned -- just applied it straight from the bottle onto the affected area. There is also no concern if they lick it. |

The problem is that the skin there is not red or irritated just bald. The doctor said that it can take weeks for the hair to start growing even after the ringworm is gone. Therefore I dont know how to determine if its gone or not?!? I will use the lamisil until this Friday as well so Im hoping that that is going to help in the process. But I just dont know how to tell that its gone and prevent it spreading on her, my apartment or other poeple. |
