Need input ASAP I came home a little bit ago and Kaya has her rear right leg lifted up. She won't walk on it at all, she won't go potty. She is shaking, but she does that sometimes anyways. I put a hoody on her to help keep her warm. I called the ER vet and of course they can't tell you anything on the phone. An exam and x-rays would be $274.00. Do I dare wait till Monday to see her regular vet? Can I give her anything for pain? Please - any advice is welcome. |
I think I'd watch her for a little bit. If she continues to shake, I'd give her a little nutrical. If that doesn't help and she doesn't potty soon, I'd take her in. Lucy hurt her back right leg one time and held it up for a week even after a vet visit and x-rays showed nothing. My vet told me once to give 1/2 of a baby aspirin for pain to see if it helped, but then told me if it didn't to bring her in. |
I don't have any baby aspirin. Is it possible to give her like 1/4 of an adult one or some Aleve or anything like that? |

If she continues not wanting to put pressure on it....I'd take her in and not wait till Monday |
If she doesn't seem to be getting any better. I'd take her in. |

I don't think it would be safe to give regular aspirin or aleve, do you? |
Ok, I guess I will need to run out for some baby aspirin. How much pepcid are you supposed to give? She weighs about 5.6# |
Here is a good site on giving asprin. I wouldnt give alieve Ive never seen anything that says if its safe or not http://kitchen.robbiehaf.com/PetHomeRemedies.html |

Teri I hope she is ok. I know if a dog is in shock look in her mouth and her gums and inside of her mouth will be white. does she seem like there is pain when you touch her leg? she may have just pulled something. I would do as the others said and get the baby asprin. If she is in shcok though you should take her in. Call me if you want. |
I hope it's not serious. You got some great advice here. Maybe she's got something stuck in her foot, like a splinter or something? |
I went to Target and there wasn't any children's aspirin - just Tylenol and Motrin. I got the low dosage Bayer but it is 81 mg - that is way too much for a dog, so I don't know how much to give her. anyone know? |
Check on and in between her pad. If it was a bee sting or spider bite her pad will be swollen. It could also be her knee cap has slipped to the side. That would be LP (luxating patella) I'm not big on medications and would let the Vet. be the judge on what to give her, if anything. Sometimes if you give medication it could interfere with what the Vet. may give. Asprin is also an anti-coagulant and can cause excess bleeding if she needed surgery. |
It seems to be tender when I press gently on the knee joint. There is no swelling or anything on the paw pads. |

I'm going to sit with her for awhile now and see how she's doing. |
Is her knee out of the socket possibly? I hope she is better soon |
I hope it isn't anythng serious, saying prayers for her. |
Thank you everyone. She is just resting now - not moving around. Her leg is still tender if I touch it. I think I will sleep on the floor with her tonight so she won't be trying to get up on the bed. She looks so cute in her pink hoodie just chilling on the couch. I know something isn't right by the look that she gives me. Does that sound crazy? There is just a certain look she gives me when something is wrong. Maybe all dogs do that. |
How is Kaya this morning? You & Kaya have been in my thoughts and prayers! |
Bella had a similar episode. I had to crate her for 14 days and the vet gave her Mobic an antiinflammatory. She was much better after 7 days. So far she is ok but I known yorkies are know for luxating patellas. They want to do xrays when i spay her soon. The grove that the patella (knee cap) slides in as the leg is extended or flexed is sometimes so shallow that the knee cap actually slips out of place. My vet also recommended walking Bella up hill to strengthen and tighten the joint to prevent slipping (luxating). No hills in FL but i do have a treadmill that inclines. Good luck with your pup and just force her to rest in a crate until the vet can diagnose the issue! |
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers. Kaya layed around looking mournful all night  and this morning seems to be fine! :cheer: She not even limping. I am SO relieved:exclaim:  Yipeeee! |

I'm glad to hear things are looking up this morning:) I'd still watch for a couple days to see if it gets tender again. These little guys can scare you to death! |
I am so glad Kaya is better this morning! Great news! Both my Magic and Sailor struggle with the knees (LP). Sailor handles it by sitting down, but Magic continues to walk but keeps that leg pulled up ....seems like different ones handle it differently. I do remember the first time for both and it scared them as much as it scared me. I did take the girls to the vet the first time.....during regular office hours....so the vet could have record of what had happened and check them for LP. Again.....So glad Kaya is better!! |

This sounds like she MAY have a mild case of luxating patella. I'm no vet but I do have some experience with that issue. Our toy poodle had a mild case of it in one leg and every great once in a while he would come to me with his leg pulled up. I would gently straighten it out and massage his kneecap until it popped back in place. It was never bad enough to require surgery. Just thought I'd share that in case your vet thinks that's what she has. Glad she's feeling better now. It very well could be that it popped back in place overnight. Dax (our poodle) never had any problems or seemed to be in pain after his knee joint (for lack of better words) was back in place. |
