my puppy will not eat :warning: I got my baby when she was 8 weeks old, a week later we traveled back home to my mother in laws and Abby (my puppy) did not take the trip well. She got car sick and would not ear or drink. When we got there she had a seizure (i think). I finally got water down her and the next morning called the local vet and they advised to give her honey, which I did. I forced water and honey down her and even tried feeding her baby food, but she was not having any of it. That night she was a little active, but the next morning she could barley walk. I called the emergency vet and he met me at the animal hospital. He said she was severely dehydrated and emaciated. She stayed in the hospital for a week, they gave her IV fluids and force fed her. He did x-rays and did not find anything wrong. I picked her up 2 days ago, but she is still not eating but she does drink a little water. I have to use a syringe to force feed her every 2 hours. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!! The vet does not know why she will not eat, he just said force feed her. Has anyone had this problem? Can anyone give me advise on what to do to help my baby? |
I would just keep trying to find something that she likes. Even if you have to home cook and feed her steak, liver or chicken. I think it is important to get her back to eating on her own first. Once you get her back on track, you can slowly try to get her back to dog food. I hope your baby feels better soon.:) |
I am so sorry that this is happening to you and your puppy. I am sure someone here can help. Please keep us updated. She ate fine the first week? Did you change her food? Have you called the breeder? |
i have never had one quite this bad. One thing i would advise tho is to get some pedialyte, like you give babies and give that to her about four times a day right now. That will build her strength up. Get some Nutracal and put a spot about the size of your index fingernail on the roof of her mouth. in my opinion, that is better than the honey. Also, have you tried boiled chicken? What are you trying to get her to eat? i have found they will eat Ceser's wet puppy almost anytime. no matter what people say about it not being the best for her, if she will eat it, you should give it to her. The most important thing right now is to get her to taking food. Anything she will eat. You can also buy some liquid Esbilac puppy supplement and thin the cesers out with that to where you can get it in a syringe and force feed that a few times. Also go the grocery and get some of those little baby food toddler hotdogs. Mash one up real soft and see if she will eat that. I am assuming the vet checked her mouth for any sign of cleft palate? please let me know if any of these things have worked and good luck. |
She ate ok the first week but she was so small and skinny |
thanks so much, I am going boiling the chicken right now. I have baby food has anyone ever tried that? |

good luck with ur baby!! |
Try this I just posted this in another thread but it will help you as well. I rescued my little Lily at 7 weeks and she would not eat either, here is what worked for her. I used the following recipe: 1/2 cup goat's milk 1/2 cup Gerber rice cereal 1 jar of Gerber's baby meat (I used beef) 1 tsp. karo syrup I slowly added ground up kibble increasing the ratio of kibble to the above mixture every day. I also gave her Rebound which is a liquid supplement and provides a full days worth of nutrients. She would not have made it without either one of these. I also had success with the Gerber's meat sticks but that was about all she would eat. |
Also wanted to add that I strongly suggest getting her tested for liver shunt. This can be done with a simple bile acid test which is inexpensive. She will have to get a bit stronger first but I would have it done as soon as possible. And I also suggest feeding her using the above recipe every few hours and make sure she stays warm. |
we are going to the vet this afternoon. I will try the recipe you gave me. she is not having the chicken. oh yea where did you get the rebound? the vet has given me lixotinic to give her everyday |

When Sarge doesn't eat I give him the Cesar's and he ALWAYS takes it. That was a good tip. It's not the best dog food on the planet, but she needs something in her belly. Also, Mighty Dog wet food works well too because of all the gravy but you have to mash up the chunks with a fork. And wet cat food is always appetizing to dogs as well. Hope this helps. :( |

which kind of cesars did you use? which flavor? |
hey my dear! i feel your pain! my puppy at 7 weeks did the same thing! try this 1/2 cup goat's milk 1/2 cup gerber baby rice cereal 1 jar of gerber meat (i used beef and chicken) 1 tsp of karo syrup a vitamin supplement that drops into the food then add kibbles gradually this worked WONDERS for me |
Have your vet check for an open font while you are there. Its just a hunch but you're situation is sounding all too familiar to my own as Lily would not touch Chicken either  Turned out she had Hydrocephalus due to an open font and MVD. |

hey everyone, I just returned from the vet ALONE!!!!!! They are keeping her this afternoon to run blood tests for the liver shunt. They are also going to take care of her during the day until she startes eating. The vet said she was going to offer her several different foods and options to try to get her to eat. Thanks everyone for all the advise, I will keep everyone updated |
Well they have a cesar for puppies now, so i get that one. I've only seen in in one variety, chicken and beef. It has a pinkish foil lid and it has a much younger white terrier on it. |

No, there is not anyone there overnight, so I am going to get her at 6:45, they close at 7. They also want her back tomorrow to keep an eye on her during the day and to try to get her to eat, that is good, i can go to work and not have to worry. |

Please make the recipe that I posted earlier. It will prevent hypoglycemia and give her some much needed nutrition. For now, I would not add any kibble and just use the recipe as is. Most dogs will eat it without assistance but if she does not then give her 1-2 ccs using a syringe every few hours. Or use the rebound if your vet had it. Good luck, I hope it works. I swear to you that when I first posted on here, Lily was hanging by a thread because she would not eat. I don't think she would have made it through the night without this recipe and the Rebound. |
I am not sure what exacltey they are going to try, she just said she was going to try a blood test. I dont think they can get any blood, she does not have enouph of anything to give right now. I am heading to the grocery store before I pick Abby up to get the stuff. I have been feeding her every 2 hours, should it be the same with that? I am also giveing her lixotonic, that is the vitamins the first vet gave me for her. |

So glad they are keeping her at least overnight and getting to the bottom of this, this has to be so hard for you. I'll remember Abby in my prayers tonight. |
Hope your baby is feeling better. |
