Please help our Charlie Can someone Please Help me with Charlie, he is a wonderful 3 yr. old Yorkie. 3 weeks ago Charlie was given a ¼ piece of Tylenol to help with a sore shoulder. A vet told my wife to give him the dose. Within 30 min of hem taking the pill he starts up chucking and falling over and his head started drawing to one side. We rush Charlie to the emergency vet room where he was given IVs and x rayed for any broken bones. After being in the care of the vet for 4 days, he could not walk and could barley hold his head up. The vet didn’t have a clue to what happened to Charlie. We bring him home and decide to take him to another Vet, here he was given high doses of steroid shots and observed. It’s now been 3 weeks now and Charlie still cannot walk. He has felling in his feet and legs, when you pull at his foot he will pull it back under him. He can now hold his head up. He eats and drinks like a pig. When he needs to go to the bathroom he will alert us with his usual bark. When we hold his favorite treat in front of him he will try to lightly push with his back legs. He seems very tired but he is very much alert and aware of what is going on. My wife stays up all night with him making sure he is comfortable and so he doesn’t lay to long on one side. If anyone has any advice our family would greatly appreciate it. We would hate to loose our friend Charlie. |
Oh my, Poor charlie. You came to the right place for support, maybe someone here has had experiance with these symptoms. Wishing Charlie a speedy recovery. :welcome4: |
HEARTBREAKING! Perhaps it was the Tylenol? Did he ingest something poisonous I wonder? I'm so sorry that he is going through this! Can you do a phone consult w/ a vet school or something? What about blood values - liver, kidney, white cells etc? |
I am so sorry for Charlie! One of my dogs has been on steroids several times and that makes him VERY hungry. He also gains weight, but then loses it. I have never heard of giving a dog Tylenol before...I sure hope your vet didn't make a bad decision on that. I sure do hope Charlie recovers fully and quickly. I will be praying for him. |
Nothing showed up in his blood work. It all tested OK. |
Good news! Hopefully he is on his way back to good health! |
Tylenol is very bad for dogs! i have no idea why your vet told you to give this to him. check out this site http://www.petplace.com/dogs/acetami...ogs/page1.aspx sounds like he already had stage one and two. if you want to give pain meds at home for your dog please only use aspirin and even this can cause problems if given alot. |
I thought Tylenol are dangerous to dogs? Correct me if I am wrong..just thought I heard this somewhere. |
Sometimes you can consult with a veterinary school. They have all the latest equipment and tests, and are not very expensive. If you have one in your area I would call them. Prayers are coming for your baby. |
If he has a liver condition that you don't know about, the tylenol could have aggravated this condition even more. If I were you, I would have a bile acid test done on this furbaby...It's much more sensitive to liver function that regular bloodwork. Reg. bloodwork won't show an abnormality in the liver until it is 70% damaged, that's why a bile acid test is suggested instead to check liver function... |
Google & Tylenol Tylenol and Generic Acetaminophen can cause IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE to LIVER and other organs Known Tylenol Side Effects In Pets Lack of Coordination Vomiting Depression Abdominal Pain Total Anorexia http://www.always-healthy-people-and...d-tylenol.html It sounds like a toxic reaction and severe. Warmly, Deborah |
I am so sorry to hear about poor Charlie and his struggle. It does sound like the tylenol may be what caused his medical problems. Poor baby. I will say a prayer for him to recover and be back to a healthy, happy yorkie. |
I am so sorry about this, I hope Charlie has a speed recovery, and i'm willing to bet it's the tylenol. Tylenol is pretty much toxic period, but especially to animals....baby aspirin only. There is an ingredient in tylenol that makes it "tylenol" and just fries your liver, so imagine what it does to our fragile little babies. I would take definite action against that vet! |

Sorry for your Charlie. Tylenol is so bad. My vet gave us Meloxicam or Mobic to use as an antiinflammatory when Bella hurt her leg. The Vet should have known better. How sad. |
