Falls Down on Stomach Hi GUys, I am beside myself when I chat about my 12 yr old little guy. He developed this thing where he would go down on his stomach and move his feet but couldn't get up. This lasted 2-3 secs. I took him for a MRI and we found out that he has 2 slip discs.One in his back and one in his neck. The neck one is causing pressure on his spinal cord which causes the disruption of fluid to the cord which causes this event. I don't know what we should do yet....surgery? it is worth it. Would he recover fully at 12? Would he be back to normal? Would he last the surgery? we are hertbroken and are exploring our options . What is good for him as well... I probably wil opt for surgeyr because we love him!!! HAs anyomne experienced this? Does anyone know the life expectancy of yorkies. We want to help him awnd this is tearing us up. thanks, stu |
I'm so sorry to hear about this problem that your yorkie is having...How is he healthwise other than the back and neck problems? Have a complete blood work up done, so that you can make sure that he'll do fine under anesthesia. I know of several yorkies who have lived to be 16-17... |

I believe they can live to 15 or 16 years. What is the vet telling you about his odds? |
I would think if he is healthy he will have several more happy years left. I have known many small dogs to make it to 18-20 years. If he is in pain with this then in my opinion it is definately worth it. I would not put him down for something like this especially at his age. All the girls have given good advise I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I hope he's feeling better soon. |

falling down on stomach thanks guys... all his blood was great.took a spinal tap to see about the spine as well..... waiting to go back to speak to vet to discuss options and what to do. just had the mri and was under anesthesia. any clues as to how many times within a time frame you can do this to the dogs. Hate to do something to him as well trying ot correct his situation. Going back to vet to discuss options and we shall see. One thing I will never do is let him suffer as much as it would pain us to do this to him.... He seems fine aside form the shaking thing occassionally. They are so cute and loveable I didn't think I would be in this situation. FYi: be careful about letting them jump off of high places. they are know to be prown to having back issues and jumping form high places surely can't be good even while it is cute. I don't want this to happen to any of you guys... stu |
I'll be praying for your little yorkie, and let us know what the vet says. I think as long as the bloodwork is okay and the vet thinks he'll do fine under anesthesia, then I don't see a reason not to do the surgery unless the risks outweigh the benefits. |

Welcome to YT. Glad you found us. Have you looked into accupuncture treatments? I go to an accupuncture vet because I found him when I had a Bichon that had a stroke. I was going to have to put my Andre to sleep & accupuncture worked! The dog who could not walk, walked again. Hey Stu, Toby is 15 1/2 and he pulled his back chasing a rabbit about 2-3 years ago. The odd time he flops over when trying to get up. I asked the vet and he said that Toby's in no pain. Did the vet say if he was in pain or not? Putting a dog to sleep for surgery at any age is a risk we all know. But Toby did have some teeth taken out when he was about 11, and he was put out for that and recouped no problem! I hope your little guy gets better! Keep us updated. |

Im so sorry to hear about your baby and will be sending good thoughts your way. As to the age and surgery...I had a yorkie mix who ended up with some type of female cancer when she was 12 yrs old. As she was healthy in every other way and would have died soon without surgery, we chose to do it. She made it though just fine and lived 3 more years. I would not trade those years I had with her for anything. At that time in my life the money for that surgery was hard to come by but I am so glad I did it. Little dogs can live up to 16 yrs so if the vet says yours is clear for surgery, I say go for it. Laura |

goes down on belly well guys. he has 3 slip discs. one in pelvis,neck and the base of his brainthat is causing the pressure on the spinal cord Am going to neurosurgeon on tues pm to discuss options. he has been on meds(prednisone) and has been perfect so we shall see. if i can help him without surgery i think we will. I don't think having surgery on the brain is the route we should take especially if they can't tell me 100% that it is the neck and not the base of the brain where it is effecting him. falls down on stomach well guys the verdict is in . he has this thing called Chiari Malformation. it is a degenative bone disease in the base of his cerebellum. has to operate or.... it cuts off the flow of spinal fluid to the spine which cause the episodes. going fo:confused: surgery fri am. so pray for him, cause i will be!!!! |
Hey Stu, how has your little guy been for ailments in the past. Toby had a operation a few years ago and he had no problems. I think he'll be ok. We'll be praying for him! Please keep up updated. Oh ya about the Prednisone, Toby has been on it since he was 8 and he's almost 16 now. |

He'll be fine. These little guys are tough as nails. Don't worry about the Prednisone. I think it affects dogs different than humans. Derek |

just read about your little guy. so sorry to hear that he has CMs. Which doctor are you taking him to and at what clinic? I see you're from the Island. We have a couple people in the area that have had to go to specialists for surgery and i was wondering if your going to the same place. Good luck with your babies surgery tomorrow. i hope everything turns out ok. |
What does your vet say about anesthesia for him? My vet won't even do a dental on twelve year old Lady anymore, but Lady has a lot of health issues. If surgery isn't an option, I'd check into accupuncture. Also, I know people two have gotten carts for dogs with back problems that have worked really well. It's so tough when they get old, isn't it? |
