Fading puppy syndrom Does anyone know much about the Fading Puppy Syndrom????? A friend of mine has a puppy that just doesn't seem to want to thrive. She force feeds her, gives her dextrose and so on and still the puppy is not doing well. Her vet has run test after tests and can not find anything wron other than sometimes it's sugar level is low. They have had her on IV and force fed her and still not much luck. Can anyone help???? |
sorry I know nothing about it. maybe type it in the search tool?? Gosh I hope the baby gets better. |
Here is the thing....it is unexplianed how a 11 week old puppy does not want to thrive. No one so far can figure it out and give her as clue what to do. She is a good person, caring for her babies and thi is a freak thing I believe that has happened. Fading puppy usually happens not to long after birth..... never heard of an 11 week old doing this. |
ohhh how sad.....please keep us posted. :( |
I dont know the answer to your question but once a puppy I was waiting on died. It was 10 weeks. The only problem the breeder saw with it was it had some hypoglycemic episodes and it had an open fontanelle |
? I assume the vet did blood tests...and did it not give any clues? My puppies are also 11 weeks, so I know how energetic they should be. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the pup has gotten into something, mine like to chew on everything in site so I made sure the area they are in is puppy proof...and still one of them chewed on a painted wood base molding..I knew it was latex paint but I still worried. Is this only happening to one pup? and none of the others are showing anything similar? Wishing the pup well and hope he/or she makes it through this. Debbie Tea' +6 |
These pups are in a bedroom with linoleum flooring, and two x pens put together and that's their area. So they could not have gotten into anything. They eat but not enough and they were playing like normal pups should, then all of a sudden they went down, so to speak. First the little boy now he is fine, then the tiny little girl and she is still not doing well at all. This morning my friend said when she got up for another force feeding ( which she does every three hours at night and every two hours during the day ) she said the biggest one was down. Maybe someone has an idea of what she can feed that they will eat..... She has tried several foods and nothing seems to stimulate their appetites. |
So more than one went down... Wow, it's a like trying to figure out a mystery..but there has to be something that triggered this if they all were affected to some degree? right? Did she use a cleaner on the floor? feed them something new? take them outside together to play before this happened (mine liked the grass so much they chewed on it and some of them got a bit of the runs afterwards)? What about house plants? Just trying to get some ideas going so maybe someone or something can help you figure this out. Debbie |
that is aweful. i hope everything works out for the better. |
well if she isnt using bottled or distilled water could they be getting sick from something in the tap water???? wow how strange. carbon monoxide? it is colorless and odorless would effect a 2 pound baby wayyyyy before an adult...it has to be something.... |
for appetite Nutrical? |
fading puppy I always use nutrical for fading puppies as they seem to have hypo-glycemic problems. My vet said that sometimes in tiny puppies, the heart/liver ratio is wrong, and as the puppy grows, the heart/liver cant keep up and eventually the puppy dies. I have had a few die at older ages like 8 and 10 weeks old. Yes, I had every test under the sun done and they found nothing. I hand fed the puppies to no avail. Nothing seemed to work. The nutrical only kept them alive. I had major problems like this when I lived in a town that was at 7000 feet elevation. I did every test under the sun again, but found nothing. I lost litter afer litter. They would get to be 7 days old and then start "fading" one by one. So, on my last litter, I had a friend whelp the litter at a lower elevation, around 2000 feet, and the pups all lived. I dont know what was going on at the higher altitude. I cleaned with bleach only, I changed all my breeders out for new bloodlines, nothing I did helped. I read that pre-mi human babies had to be air-vaced to a lower elevation as there was not enough oxygen at 7000 feet for them to survive. I eventually moved to a lower elevation and have never had a problem. Just a thought, Lynn |
I am not sure if this will help, but I had a 1 pound, 10 week old with the same problem, ie not eating enough. This can cause massive drops in their blood sugar. I was force feeding her and the vet said that sometimes that will have a reverse affect. If they are old enough, try mixing canned tuna with honey. The vet said this is obviously NOT a good puppy diet, but at least it gets something in them. If it is hypoglycemia you need to make sure the sugar levels are consistent. Lolo was having seizures because her blood sugar levels were so erratic. Try giving them a bit of Nutrical and then a protein/carbo combo like rice and chicken or honey and tuna. I am NOT a professional and I only consulted one vet, but Lolo pulled through after 2 weeks. Let me know if I can help any further! |
Ok this is what she has and is doing she said........ She is giving nutri cal, she has tried chicken and rice, she is force feeding them AD, and has tried other things. She is even giving pedialite. She has tried many different food to get them to eat something and two are eatting a little but the little girl is not. Nothing has changed at her house, not cleaning products or anything like that. She has never had them outside because she feels they are too tiny. They are 11 weeks old today and do not even weigh a pound yet. Well the bigger boy weighs a little over a pound but the other two no way. And believe me she is not breeding small dogs to get tiny ones as her females are a good breeding size. So the vets have checked the blood level and its a little low but what she is doing should have brought it up. They even though liver shunt and did the tests and that's not it. She said they have done every test they can think of. |
I'm so sorry to hear this and hope the little ones are well soon. Keep us posted. |
:( Wow, this has got to be driving her absolutely crazy trying to figure this all out...is this her first litter? If not, has she ever had any problems like this before. Her pups sounds very small for their age...if the mom wasn't tiny herself. Wishing a miracle turnaround for her babies!!! |

She is at her wits end and has tried everything with no avail. |
This sounds just like what happened to my puppies!! I lost three in total!! Please please have them checked for giardia and coccidea...take multi fecal samples in and they will mix them all together and test it. If it comes up negative - I would get a second opinion. We had our pups die from this and the vet checked and checked...had bad snap tests and told us some puppies are just meant to die and there was nothing we could do. They had this for a month before I read up on everything and went for a second opinion!! Please tell her to get this checked or go to a diff vet!!! Give puppies kyro syrup in the water and in their mouths several times a day - every few hours if needed. If it's a really bad case of coccidea it will lower the blood sugar so fast that the nutrical can't even help. Giardia causes them to stop eating. We force fed one of ours for two months until we could get her to eat on her own. When ours were really bad like it sounds like hers are now we had to tube feed ever few hours and give the kryo syrup. Kryo syrup is not something I would usually rather use over nutrical, but in this case you need to. Don't let the vet tell you that the pups are too small like ours did- there should never be a litter all go down just because they are small. Let me know and feel free to PM me if you have any questions!! We got this from bringing a dog into our home (the test were bad at our vet) so they were allowed in with our dogs. Our puppies never go outside, but really the parents can get this from just going outside OR it even can be brought inside on your feet! |
I tried this mix with my puppies to try to get them to start eating solid food (weaning) crushed up puppyfood, First Born replacement milk, with a dash of Nutrical....they loved it! I know they are already weaned, but this mix is super nutricious and might be appealing to them. Wishing you good luck!! |
I forgot to say that sometimes these won't show up and needs to be retested. When one of ours went to the ER vet and actually died - everything was negative. If they go down too far they don't drop. |

I will tell her all this. Thanks a million as I don't know if they checked the stool or not. I know she said she might try the tube feeding on the one as the others she said seem to be doing better. |

I will give this to her to try as she is willing to try anything at this point. THANKS |
I am so sorry your friend is going through this. I wanted to post so I can keep up on your updates. Warm regards, |
Update...... This morning she said the two are doing great and the little girl has picked up slightly but not enough. She is going back to the vet today to see if they will check for giardia and was told by Wreene4. Lets hope they figure something out. As I can only imagine getting up every 2 or 3 hours to feed them has to be exhausting. |
how r the babies today??? |
I wanted to update everyone and thank all for their advise. But she lost the little girl this morning. The two boys are doing great and eating more and more on their own. I guess it just wasn't meant to be for the little girl. Please keep my friend in your prayers and pray the others make it ok. THANKS |
I am so sorry. |
I am so sorry - your friend must be so heartbroken. I'm sending prayers for her 2 little boys for continued improvement. |
I'm so sorry for her loss. Praying for the two little boys |
Wanted to tell everyone thanks for all the advise and prayers. The two boys are thriving and doing great and I hope and pray they keep doing great. She is certainly heart broken over loosing the little girl and the vets sent the body off for tests. I hope they find a reason because a reason is better than not knowing anything. |
