question about prednisone i have a dog that has allergies every year and last year when she was on the prednisone her pancreas strated to shut down fast, she almost died. the dr said it was from the prednisone. this year we tried benadryl but that didnt help her at all any other suggestions? i really dont want to do more then 1 round of pred. actually i didnt want to give her any at all but she was sooo miserable i didnt know what else to do. |
I wish I could help you - it's a drug that has amazing results but also a TON of bad side effects - my husband is on it and he has alot of bad things going on. If you can treat without it - that's the best way to go but in some cases it really is a wonder drug |
I have a love hate relationship with it also. I wonder if the herbs that help with allergies for humans would work on a dog? I know it is not good for the doggies to take predinsone but at times it cant be helped. |
I am so very sorry that your little guy suffers from allergies. No fun at all. My dear sweet Laciebug (may she forever rest in peace) had a very rare disease that caused leisions in the lining of the brain. She was on a daily low dose of prednisone for 5 years with no noticable side effects. I was very concerned about the long-term use of prednisone, but my vet assured me that dogs don't have nearly as many adverse reactions to the steriod as humans do. |

OH poor baby - I am so sorry she is suffering with her allergies. Can I ask .... what are the side effects she is having with the prednisone? I am asking because I just put my Murphy on it because he is having small seizures and body tremors. I really have not noticed too many side effects except that he is a little more hungry, drinks a lot of water and seems to pant a little more after lots of play. I wish you the best in your search for a cure for your baby. |
last year when she was on it it hit fast, i let the dogs out she really didnt want to go when i went to let them all in she wouldnt come i had to carry her bk in, she was having accidents in the house and didnt want to get up thats all i noticed. i took her in that same day he said she could die they taught me how to do the iv packs to keep her hydrated since she wouldnt drink and we took her home. it took about 3 weeks to get she back up and almost to normal again. there werent alot of noticable signs thats why i'm am kinda freaking out this year having to put her back on it |
one thing to try for allergies Go to this site: nzymes.com We've had two dogs w/allergies so bad--one gal had chewed the hair off of her chest, this stuff cleared it up. I have the before/after photos on another computer (in the shop) or I would send them to you. Evidently a lot of people swear by this stuff. Pam |

I'm so sorry your little pal is suffering so. And I feel badly for you too. My toy poodle had horrible grass and corn allergies. He had the winter to recuperate and then start again. It took me a couple of years to figure it out, but meanwhile, I used oatmeal shampoo and a hot spot pray with tea tree oil and aloe in it to help him feel more comfortable. I had to stay right on top of it though or he'd chew his skin something awful. I did use a prednisone spray after we figured out what the allergies were from but I decided not to put him on oral prednisone. He did very well once I removed the corn from his diet and kept him off of the cut grass and tall grasses. Short lawns a couple of days old were best for him. You should have seen my back yard - there always had to be one place that wasn't freshly mowed so he could potty. ;) |
My Westie was on prednisone for about a year - and the only side effect I noticed was increased thirst and increased urination. At first, she would have accidents in the house - which was totally unlike her - but she eventually learned to hold it til I got home. |
tye my 13 year old yorkie has been on prednisone for nearly 3 years due to heart failure, he has one every other day and doesnt seem to have any side effects. |
So far she is doing well on it this year, she only has seasonal allergies also so i hope 1 round will get it under controll and she can get off it. i think the problem last year was she had to have 3 rounds of it and the last 2 were higher doses. lexie has stopped pulling her fur out but is still licking alot but seems to be acting normal i am relieved. she has 3 more days of 1 pill a day left. |
