Unknown Illness , Little Moe..any ideas? Saturday night hubby and I went away for the night, it wasn't planned a friend of his was in desperate need so we had to go. I put Moe and pippy in a blocked of area of the house that was fully doggy proof, and left it at that.Sunday we returned home, to find they had broken out somehow and had full run of the house! I looked around and nothing to my knowledge had been gotten into, except a sponge, a paper towel, and a plastic hinge off thier crate. By Sunday night I noticed Moe wasn't himself, his tail was dragging the floor, and he just seemed "different".Monday I took them with us thinking he was off due to being left, but still even after a full day of doggy pampering and full attention, he was dragging his tail, and by Monday night walking a bit stiff.Tuesday I worked all day, but fortunately hubby was off, so I had him take Moe in. Up to this point he had passed no stool either.Tuesday morning he was not only walking stiff but arched as well, he wouldnt jump on the bed as ussual or take the stairs....so hubby took him in.The vets gave him 2 shots one to relax his muscles and to tell you the truth I couldnt tell you what the other was meant to do.They sent us home with some paste stuff to give him to help his bowel movements soften up and start again. The vet said to watch him, and check any stool for objects or bits of objects.Wednesday Moe was much worse, too stiff to move, arched like a halloween cat, and so tired you'd think he was an old dog, when actually he turns 3 on Saturday.Wednesday at 5 we took him to the vets they did exactly the same as the day before and sent us home saying he could eat if he wanted it.Wednesday night he finally had a full bowel movement half dark and hard the rest normal and soft.Today we took him to the vets at 10am, he was still arched still stiff legged and still they did nothing more than to give him the shot and send us home, no bloods no x rays, nothing more to try to explore what this could be.Tonight he is vomiting, very very lethargic, not been awake much if any today, and still very arched and stiff, not walking as when he does his back end gives out.The vet wants him back again tomorrow, I am telling you I can scarcely afford another visit thats going to be the same as the others, it would be worth it if they would do other things, as in bloods or xrays..to try to pin point the problem..but they wont....oh yeah and all this time he has had a temp.I am fearful for my little guys life and his well being, he is suffering this I am sure of, Moe is by no means a calm dog, he is over the top active and full of life..these past few days he is just not the dog I know and Love......has anyone got ANY ideas of what his ailment sounds like?......oh yeah...he is constantly putting his head on me as a rest for it..this is not something he ever has done before....Any ideas would be great cause when i go to the vet tomorrow im going to throw out possibilities of what to look for...its a foriegn vet who I just dont think knows much...and in my town I am unfortunatley limited to vets. |
Oh, heavens. When I first started reading the thread, I thought maybe his bowels were obstructed, but then, as I read further I realized he had gone to the bathroom. I can't imagine what else it might be. Sounds like he's in pain. Is there any other vet within a reasonable distance you might visit to get a second opinion? My prayers are with you and your furbaby. |
Why don't you just request that they do x-rays and bloodwork? If they don't take you seriously, call a vet who will do the tests that you have requested. It sounds like it's possible that he may have an obstruction or he may have swallowed something that is harming his insides. I wouldn't take any chances. Or it could be something unrelated. Good luck!! |
My husband and I have BOTH been insisting and requesting they do further tests, there is another vets close to us, which is actually who we used to use, but they have since changed hands and are now the most expensive in our whole area.....out of reach for me financially.I am paying daily for each visit and the meds, and slowely it is mounting up ....I am quite sure it will cost tons by the time we get to the bottom of this....but in my view to diagnose his problem, and cut down on the cost it would have been best to run the tests and xrays first thing..then they would KNOW what it was causing this, they would then be able to have a plan of healing and go from there.....instead all this time later they are just guessing. while poor Moe suffers for it, I would take him to the other vets...as still might do, but as I said....thier prices are so extrordinairy the common person(such as me) cant afford them.:( |
i hope you find out what it is really soon. that poor baby seems to be in a lot of pain. let us know if you go to the vets again. |
right now he is sleeping by me and hopefully his body is doing the work required to get him better. |
Oh my gosh, poor Little Moe and you's. :( You don't think he could have ate some of the sponge and now it's like getting bigger inside him? I know you've spent a lot of money already but it's so sad to say, it oviously hasn't helped him.:( I think he needs an x-ray and blood work like others have said. I would be so mad at that vet. Please take him to another vet, he still needs help. |
I'd have to take Moe to another vet or to an ER vet. Please update as you know more. |
My Kalani chewed up the edge of a plastic mat last week and all of the symptoms you're saying your baby have are what my vet told me specifically to watch for as they are signs of a blockage. I would have x-rays done ASAP! |
This particular vet doesn't seem to think he has a blockage, as his bowels did finally move yesterday.....I am still concerned myself about the possibility of maybe a bit of the plastic hinge having embeded in his stomach wall or somethingThe other concern, as this IS something noticed on one of many trips..his prostate felt "a bit" swollen, but when they learned he had been neutered 2 years ago they lost much interrest in this factor.Every visit they feel his insides by both palpating externally, and then the dreaded finger in the butt thing he hates......Each time they say they feel NOTHING that would warrent an xray or concern on my part......ok when my 3 years old doggy has lost his spark, can barely stand and refuses EVERYTHING that ussually gets him going mad.....it warrents concern on my part. |
i would take him to a diff vet and dont tell them he has been seen by anyone else . there is something wrong and if you vet isnt doing what you think he should i would get a second opinion for sure. just to be on the safe side. |
I have been through this!!! Hi, I am so glad I read your thread, You definatly need x-rays, see my pit bull a few years ago had ate something she was just a pup, and she had bowel movements and all, but she would not eat, was vomiting, and what had happened was the piece had logged in a way that had ....how do I say....um....stuck into the side of the stomach/intestine area, and still allow the bowel movement to move through but it was like....stuck into. Yes yes yes bad pain, sounds like this might be a possibility for you, we never did find out exactly what it was but it looked weird what ever it was. Let us know how the little guy does. |
If I were back in the states, I am sure my choices in vets wouldn't be as limited, but unfortunately I live in the UK and am in a smaller town, there are 3 main vets here one you can only take your pet to if THEY consider you too poor to afford a vet, then theres the one I go to now, then theres the EXTREMELY expensive one, I am on a very low income.....though I wasn't at the time I took on my babies....but now that I am on an extremely low budget the other vet..who probably would do a better job , is just simply out of my reach, even if I wanted to take him there I simply could not afford thier fees.It makes me so upset that the very welfare of my beloved Moe is down to cost.....but I am only just getting over a very lengthy illness myself, and 4 surgeries later financially I am left with the bare minimum to live off .....the UK is more expensive than one might think , but if tomorrow this vet doesn't do anything different I will be looking into the idea of a possible loan to afford the other vet...if the bank allows it. |

Praying that you will find a way to get your pup the help he so desperately needs. |
We took Moe in to the vets today(AGAIN) and this time they agreed with us he needs x rays and blood works...FINALLY ...I am now sitting here after dropping him off, they said they will call for me to come get him, or let me know if they are keeping him i. The vet today was a young lady , who seemed to me to know what she was doing....she did a few physical tests on him and is also concerned that it may in fact not be his internals, but rather his spine! There is the chance that when he and Pippy made thier great escape from the safe area that he fell down stairs, as they both get very rambunctious on the stairs( always fighting for who's first one down them) So hopefully today we will know whats what, or at least have a generl direction to take.I am so sad without him here next to me..he is never not here next to me...hubby calls him my little shadow......it's quite true as well. There have been times that I literrally have been looking and calling for him and he is actually that close behind me I just havn't seen him, LOL hubby finds it quite funny when I do this.Anyways ...were now playing the waiting game, so thought I'd let everyone know. |
poor Moe ! :( :( I think he needs xrays too and will be praying for him - it sounds like he's really in pain and I know that has to be breaking your heart.. sending GET WELL WISHES and please keep us updated ....I hope you get to the bottom of what's causing this |
Oh good, am so glad you were able to get a vet who is willing to run the necessary tests to get to the bottom of all of this. Prayers going out for both you and Moe! |
I'd find another vet somewhere. There has to be another one that will take payments, ares does. Best wishes. |
:( well the vets run barium through him xrayed him physical examed him, so far no signs of what where or why...his situations a complete mystery to them.:( They are keeping him in overnight now and will be observing him to try and see anything they may have missed in the tests. this is really worrying me now...since there is no resason they can find for it all.:( |
Poor little guy :( |
Sounds like it's time for a new vet to me. And just because he pooped doesn't mean that something couldn't be stuck in his digestive system. I lost my Starr to this, along with a stupid vet:cry: Please get a second opinion immediately. I hope Moe is much better very soon:love: |
Aww, poor little Moe. I'll be praying that the vet can figure out what is wrong very soon and take care of it. No matter what a person's finances will or will not allow, a vet should NEVER deprive a baby of quality care. It sounds like maybe this lady vet is more compassionate than the first one was. Hopefully, Moe will be feelling better soon. Hugs to your little guy, and to you, too. I'm sorry you have to go thru this. |
Poor little Moe I know how you feel. I went through hell trying to find out what was wrong with Dudley. It seems like it took forever to find my answer, but Dudley is now doing well and I am paying off my credit cards. Please hang in there and insist they find what is wrong. I will be praying for you both. |
I'm so glad you took Moe back to the vets. :) I hope with keeping him overnight they can find what's wrong with him. Poor Moe, :getwellso Hang in there, I know this is hard on you as well. :( Please post tomorrow after you pick him up from the vets. |
I'm so sorry to hear about little Moe and I'll say a prayer. The unknown is always so scary. Is it possible he did hurt his back and now has a pinched nerve? Would that show up on tests? I hope that you get some answers tomorrow. Poor little sweetie. Hugs to you! |
Im keeping little Moe in my prayers. I feel so bad for him and for you, I know how you feel When Mickey was ill and had Bladder stones I kept taking him back to the vet , While he kept playing the guessing game and I kept telling him to take blood, do xrays and he would put it off, My little one suffered over a month, I learned I had to be the one to say hey do this and do that . they finally did but after many visits, If they would of listened to what I was saying in the first place It would of saved us so much money and saved my baby from so much suffering. and from so much reading and advice from YT members and another forum I knew it was stones. Ill always check YT first them make sure our vet do what I want done on the first visit from now on. I wish you luck with your vet and I hope they find the problem with Moe so he can getter better fast. |
The X Rays and Barium showed his system is free of any blockages or foreign bodies, The vets have sent him home with us today, from the blood tests( which they werent going to run until I told them to) they have decided LiL Moe has been Poisoned, not as in household items poisoned, as in someone out in the general public has poisoned my dog.We keep all house cleaning products high and out of all pet reach, we have no gardening type stuff, such as fertilizer ect, any mechanics stuff is locked away and out of reach, there is simply nothing poisonous or toxic within access to pets in our home, this is a very strictly followed rule of our home.....yes sponges, or cloths if in the laundry basket are reachable, and yes general household items a dog could chew up are rechable.....but nothing toxic. When the vet said poisoning we reflected back, Friday both Moe and Pippy threw up...I thought nothing of it at the time as they are always eating grass which in turn makes them throw up.....so I simply thought this was the same.Saturday both dogs seemed ok, though Moe did seem a bit quiet.....I simply thought he was in a strop with me about leaving him.The vet says the organs all are functioning properly, though his liver tested high..whatever that means, but deffinately NOT LIVER SHUNT...and that there is no reason he wont eventually be fine in himself, though we wont know till later how much of the nerve damage to the muscles is permanenet. This nerve damage is whats causing his back end to keep dropping....and so I really hope this aspect of it goes as he will never be the same if he cant run and play properly.....he is still feeling poorly and still has tummy pain, but they say this will pass with time....so really our only major concern is the back end dropping out from under him when he trys to stand or walk.I also have taken a look back and realized its not his 3rd birthday it's his second birthday...it seemed to me like we have had him longer....but guess I was wrong.....So this is for Moe...HAPPY 2ND BIRTHDAY!!! |
Happy Birthday :bigbdaypa :bigbdaypa :bigbdaypa Happy Birthday little Moe... get better soon. |
