I don't know what else to do, please help! I spent $250 today on two different vet visits, had xrays done, meds, fluids, etc. Last night Lucy started vomiting (mostly yellow and foamy). She was fine thru the night but I woke up to her gurgling and the vomit was brownish. I took her outside and she started having liquid bowel movements, yellow in color, then they started to turn to blood! After calling vet I decided to bring her in and pay the emergency fee bc the blood scared me. She had a fever and they gave her subcutaneous fluids, antibiotics, anti-diarrheal, anti-vomit, and the equivalent of a pepcid. She said to feed her chicken and rice. The xray machine was broken at that time. She said if the bloody stool continued in excess to bring her back in. We fed her, and gave her water in small amounts. The vomit stopped but the blood continued. It almost looked like clots in it. She squats like she has the urge to poop but blood drips out. After about 5 times of this I called and the xray was fixed so I took her back in. They said they saw nothing in the xray. But that her stomach was full (I wish they wouldn't have told me to feed her!) They asked if I wanted to hospitalize her for another $170 which would have mainly consisted of the treatments she already had (fluid, etc.) On the way home she threw up all of her food. When I got home I gave her a second dose of the anti-vomit so that I could try more rice. She has thrown up three times since then and will not eat. My fiance just gave her 3 ml of water so she stays hydrated. PLEASE HELP |
The vet originally said that it was gastroentitis (sp?) but that it could be hemorraghic something... Any other ideas and what do you recommend??? She just took a little pepcid since she has been vomitting so much. My cousin said his dog did this and got so frustrated with the 2+ hour vet wait that he just left and his dog was fine the next day. She has been sick before, but never blood, I am so scared for her! My other dog did this right before she passed away (at 17). Lucy is not even 2. |
Anyone? Posting here is the last idea I had. Any recommendations of what this could be so that the vet can test tomorrow if she needs to? |
did they test her for any viral diseases? Parvo anything like that? |
They did a rectal exam but didn't test for anything because they couldn't get a stool sample.. |
I think it might be HGE |
I think you should find a vet who will take a complete blood panel which shows her protein level. It is probably very high and she has either pancreatitis or colitis. A knowledgeable vet would put her on IV treatment, withhold food for 24 hrs. to settle her stomach down. Passing blood is not a good thing to happen for an extended time. If that is the diagnosis, she will have to be on a medication and very gentle food until her stomach heals. Good luck and I know this is a frightening time. Warmly, Deborah |
Sounds like an IBD problem. Get some plain children's pedilyte, and put some into her water bowl mixed with regular water. Also, if you have a syringe, force some down too (extra protection). I think her GI track needs to settle down, so no treats and no dog food. I would get some boiled brown rice and either boiled chicken breast or boiled lean ground beef (rinse well to get out a grease and oil, fat). If you have a food processer, I would mix it all up in there and then feed. Watch her close. Is there anything around the house (in or out) that she could have gotten in to? |
Thanks for the reply. She has already had fluids today, do you think I should wait to take her again in the morning? I gave her fluids with a syringe, is this okay? I just don't know what to do at this time. We've been to the vet twice now. |
How is she right now? When was the last time she pooped mucus? When was the last time she pooped blood? And how much? Is her tummy she girguling? |
There were some fungus spores (i think) that appeared on our mulch. No one saw her eat any, and it has been there for several days. I can't think of anything else that she could have gotten into. The only reason that I think it is HGE is because the blood has not stopped even after the treatment she received this morning and afternoon. |
She is pretty lethargic now, not interested in food, but did take water and meds by syringe. Her tummy isn't gurgling noticeably but it was earlier this morning when we gave her some water (we figured bc she hadn't eaten). |
About 30 minutes ago there were two drops of soft stool mixed in with her blood. She drips blood with smalll traces of fecal matter every time we take her out, about 30 min-1 hour. |
My baby had pancreatitus.. bloody loose stools. At the onset it was projectiled bloody and no form or poo in there that I can see. Good thing was is that we were in the vets office when it happened and its tested neg for parasites and bacteria. He was not eating and had other problems going on, so he was admitted to the hospital for an overnite IV. Once done with that, I was told to give him Pepcid AC 1/4 of a 10mg pill. This will help keep the stomach calm and to also feed a very very low fat diet. Boiled Chicken and Rice, boiled hamburger and rice. It has to be easily digestible foods to keep the stomach and pancreas on a nice even keel. It took but a couple of days and he was back to normal. Also 100% pumpkin will help firm the stool. But the blood concerns me. Did they check for pancreatitus? As for the other problems my pup is experiencing... Unfortunately he has confirmed to have Cushings Disease. This is entirely heatbreaking experience. |
Ok, maybe hold off on the food until tomorrow. She can fast and let her tummy settle, she'll be ok without food for a day. Continue forcing water with the syringe, also if you have pedialyte too, you can give that every once and a while. Now, back to poop and blood. Since you came home from the E-Vet... How many times has she pooped? What was it like? |
I'm so sorry to hear that Jujubabe. Would you recommend taking her in for a third time tonight? She had antibiotics and subq fluids around 10 am, it's 8:30 pm now. We gave her pepcid not too long ago. |

I am so sorry that your baby has IBD - Cushings... My TJ also has some sort of IBD. His episodes are under control right now, but they may flare back up again at some point. It is so sad to see them like that. |
She has probably gone about 5-6 times after each visit. I will hold off on the chicken and rice but she has not eaten for 24 hours. The food she ate today all came up in the vomit. I will pick up some pedialyte and see if that helps any. |
Well, only you can be the judge on whether to take her or not tonight??? What did they say to you before you left? Does she seem WAY OUT OF IT??? |
They didn't "test" for anything. It's all been exclusions. She said gastroentitis and then the other option is HGE. Those are the only two things she mentioned. I am gonna run to the store while my mom is watching Lucy, I'll be back shortly to read your replies! I need to get my mind off this for awhile, it's been an exhausting 24 hours. |
You could call and ask if they did the test for it. They have given her fluids so thats what they would do. If you notice lethargy and wobbling I would take her in. I would definately put some pedialyte in the water, this will keep the electrolytes and potassium up while she is drinking and peeing and pooping. I agree with the recommendation of not feeding any more food. You could look into Science Hill I/D. That was also recommended its made for belly problems. I got a couple cans of it, he hated it... its so bland. So he gets boiled chicken. So in short.. withhold food, supplement with some pedialyte - comes unflavored. When she gets hungry... a very low fat easily digestible meal. Withhold food and IV is how they calm the pancreas. My moms pup was in for 4 days. He is 5lbs and was poopin and vomiting non-stop. She rushed him in and they kept him for 4 days. |
The vet acted like the hospitalization would have continued what she already had done for today. I think she will probably be okay through the night and I will take her in the morning. She is acting pretty down bc she is normally too hyper, but she is still cuddly, etc. I am also worried about who would be with her all night since the doctors leave at 2 am?? |
I don't think that you should force food on her. She will be ok without food for 24 hours. BUT...you can put a little rice and chicken (or beef) on a plate and leave it, if she honestly feels well enough to eat, she will, but mostly likely she doesn't even want it. So they didn't do a fecal??? It might be Coccidia or Giardia. |
Good luck and let us know how it goes. I hope she's ok. It's just real strange they didnt test for anything. If you do go back tonight, insist they perform tests for things ppl have mentioned. |

Oh my...I am so sorry! I have GI issues on my brain and I got confused with Crohen's Disease. I will keep him in my prayers always. :) Please keep us informed, he just sounds so precious... |
Thanks everyone, I will definitely mention the testing!!! She just got up from a long nap and didn't wobble at all when walking. Went out again and it was mostly water but still red coming out of her bottom. She took more water from a syringe and I just bought some pedialyte but the only kind they had was fruit-flavored. Is that ok? |
Lucy made it all night without any bloody diarrhea or vomit. She did vomit a yellow color this morning when I got her up. She has not peed which kinda worries me, but I guess she has less fluids. I gave her her meds, which she hates. She is lethargic but at least her ears are perking up. Of course, it is 5 am. She is resting in her bed now and then I will get her some pedialyte (once the anti-vomit settles in her belly). She will not take the pepcid so I just crushed 1/4 and stirred it up in water and gave her some through syringe. Please pray that she is okay. The lack of blood seems good to me, but it hasn't been 24 hours yet, so we will see. Her cage was dry so that is a good start. |
UPDATE: Her aneroxia and depression are fading. She ate a small amt of chicken and rice and wanted outside just to sniff around (her fave thing to do). I am just praying now that she will keep the food down! |
Yay!!!! |
