My nylabone nightmare
 

I don't believe how crazy this last week has been. :( I think a nylabone has caused two of my dogs to visit the vet in the last week.

starting last week Monday Nomi had a slight case of diarrhea. By Tuesday night it had gotten worse so I stopped her dog food and went to a boiled chicken and rice diet. Her stools firmed up on the the 4th of July, so on Thursday I tried to give her dog food again, but the diarrhea started again. I called my vet and explained that Nomi has had diarrhea off and on for about 4 days. They told me to continue with the chicken and rice and add in peptobismol and bring her in on Monday if it didn't get better. So we did that. By Friday night the diarrhea stopped again, but she started vomiting under our bed.
So on Saturday morning I hand fed her the rice and chicken and kept pushing water on her to drink because I didn't want her to get dehydrated. She was fine until Saturday night. She refused to eat. With nothing in her stomach, she again threw up under our bed several times. By now I was really worried.
However on Sunday morning she wanted eat again and was fine throughout the day. And like the other two nights before, she refused dinner again and threw up at night.
Well I took Nomi to the vet first thing this morning and they did a fecal exam and blood tests and came back with nothing. They ended up doing x-rays and found a "mass" in her stomach. That immediately made me think back to the weekend before last when my lab Jedi had chewed through Nomi's nylabone and split the pieces between himself, Nomi, and Alexis. I thought that I had gotten all of the pieces up and actually had to take Jedi in to the vet last Monday because he had broken a tooth on that nylabone.

Well they sent Nomi back home and I am suppose to withhold all food from her (which won't be a problem because she hasn't wanted to eat today anyway) and they will do x-rays again tomorrow. If the mass is still there, she'll have to do surgery.

I am so frustrated! Can a nylabone do all of this or am I just jumping to conclusions because I am so worried about Nomi?

We don't use nylabones but I have to wonder if they're digestable? My guess is that they are not so that could be the cause of the problems. Saying prayers for your little one.

I am so very sorry that your Nomi is sick. I hope that all goes well and that she somehow passes the mass. Surgery is so scary. Sending hugs :ghugs: and well wishes and hopes for nylapoops

I don't use nylabones because my kids chew off tiny bits. I am afraid of them.

I am so sorry to hear about your babies. I never give my dogs nyla bones or rawhide. When I was a kid my dog got a perferated intestine from a rawhide. Also I heard that the greenies cause masses as well. I stick to real marrow bones that have been cooked and sterilized-but keep a close eye to make sure no pieces break. I hope your puppies do not have to have surgery-keep us posted.

I hope your sweetie doesn't have to have surgery. What a nightmare.

I have a nylabone on the floor right now that is going in the garbage. Luckily, none of my dogs like them - none of the flavors... maybe they know something we don't???

I havent given mine nylabones since Chachi chewed a big piece off one. I defintely think they could have caused that mass

It depends...there is more than one kind of the nylabones. Chloe chews the healthy edibles, which are made from rawhide; we have never had a problem with those kind.

This is terrible, I hope you baby gets better. We had a nylabone scare about 2 weeks ago but luckily the pieces that my baby ate passed. I always supervise when she has her nylabone but the 2 seconds that I turned my head, she ate part.

I read online (after I freaked out when I found Lily had eaten some) that when swallowed in large pieces, they may become lodged in the intestines. I really, really hope this is not what happened to Naomi.

That sounds like what I went through with Buddy when he was 10mo.
old. He was throwing up and had black diahrea in the middle of the night.
When I saw blood I rushed him to the ER. Four days in the hospital and $2,000 after
they thought it may have been the nylabone. There were some form of grit in his lower intestines. He had every style and color because he was an aggressive chewer at the time. I threw everyone out and never bought anything made by nylabone again. If you read on the back label it states,
"small pieces may come off, the size of a grain of rice and SHOULD pass.
Guess what, sometimes they don't and this is what happens.
Always read the fine print because these manufactures cover themselves
with the SHOULD and could be and maybe's. These small pieces that they refer too can also cut the lining of the stomach because they are like slivers
of glass. I wouldn't by the digestable either. I don't trust any of those types
of things again. My vet said never, never give them this type of chew or
rawhide either. Your looking for trouble somewhere down the road. I now believe him.

I hope your baby feels better. Sorry you went through such a scare.

OMG! THis is terrible!!!!!!!! I feel so badly for everyone involved...you, your labbie, Naomi, EVERYONE! I'll definatley keep everyone in my thoughts and prayers! I'm keeping my fingers crossed there's no blockage!

Thanks for all of the well wishes and prayers. The more I think about it, I more I get upset that these treats, bones, and toys are made that aren't safe. Like most people, I go into a store and buy items off the shelf that are made for dogs and assume that they are ok for them. Child toys are recalled all the time. Dog toys that cause these types of problems should be recalled too or be labeled with a visible warning.

Jedi is fine. He broke a front tooth. Since it isn't bothering him, my vet is going to wait to pull it. Thank God Alexis hasn't had any trouble and we'll know more about Nomi when she goes in tomorrow for more x-rays.
I just wish that I knew how to make her more comfortable.
I'll update after our vet visit tomorrow.

I havent ever heard of that happening but I did notice on the nylabone puppy bone Reeses used to have it said on back that tiny pieces SHOULD pass but once the knobs (ends of the bone) get chewed back some to throw it away. He had had that bone about a week and when I read that I decided I wasnt taking ANY chances and threw it away. As for the healthy edibles...my moms toy weenie dog loves those and thats about the only bone she will eat and she gobbles it down for the most part and has never had any trouble. I dunno...bones can be so weird and unpredictable sometimes. I have taken Reeses off all bones unless its a bully stick or some kind of real dog bone that has flavor and stuff like marrow bones. If he gets something else he is laying right in front of me while i watch tv or study so i can keep a constant eye on him with him. Lol...like I said Im not taking chances. You may have to do the same. Goodluck with everything and yall are definately in my prayers!!

I have 2 agressive chewers and I have yet to find anything that they can safely chew on.
