they think he has pancretitas. i dont know what to do, I'm not going to worry i if i dont spell,,,, i just need help

my dog had severe pancreatitis and i have never heard of these - what is it ? When did he get pancreatitis

I get from the doc too much fat. he just got it 3 days ago, but we have been in and out of the vet for 4 months. he has alway had timmy stuff. blood in poop and throwing up blood. now hes loaded on these patchs. i guess it is the most painful thing they get. st they are keeping him comfortabul

Did your baby get better? did it take a long time? was he (she) sick before the attack... mine has had tummy problems from the start and i have been really careful. he my first.

I would doubt they are bad for a Yorkie. If they were, a vet would or should not have prescribed it. You can google Fentanyl and/or Fentanyl dog and get lots of info.

he had it severe and had a plasma transfusion it was horrible and now has inflammatory bowel disease - read some of my posts as we have two sick ones - one with ibd and pancreatitis and one with allergies :( horrible

The attack came on after a walk and then he relapsed then it affected the small intestines- still do not what caused it

he came home from gramma house, she had given him his liver chip treats ,same as alway,, she said she gave him a tablespoon of beef, little bites for he is training. he had steak before. (1) just small. he eats chicken and rice all the time. he has it with his nutro small bites.. i give him natural balance lamb stick cut up,i keep that in my pocket. for traning and he gets mavrikk chew stick for 20 min at night, then i take it before bed, he has always got blood in his stool .we go about 2 to 3 week then back to the vet. more mebs. this time he upchucked blood. off to the vet. nothing in film, but liver panel up. his internest said, may be pancretatis. put him on patch pepcid, ralyn some- thing.........
and he his not a happy camper at all

You pup is very ill as you well know. Sounds like he is on antibiotic, acid reducer and pain relief. I am surprised he is not in the vet hospital since he is vomiting and passing blood in his stool. This is life threatening. Sending you healing thoughts in this message. Please don't wait for your next vet visit because it is too far out when your baby is so ill.

he only did the blood upchck thing once. that was on friday night, he got his meds. and a film tat night. still wasnt right by monday. monday night he had runny poops so i took him that morning back to the internest. i was the one who thinks he not right. he is eating boild chicken and rice. and drinking. goes in to power surges, then tired. i am taking him a.m. for the fsting test.

Please keep us posted on his progress. It sounds like he should be on a strict bland diet. I wouldn't give steak anymore or the liver treats. Boiled 90% lean ground beef might be better, after you boil it make sure to rinse it well.

Those patches are like a morphin patch (My Roxy gets one after her knew surgery). VERY STRONG PAIN MEDS. That tells me that he is in EXTREME pain. This is serious, watch him like a hawk, anymore blood in poop or vomit bring him to the Vet. If your current Vet doesn't seem to be doing a good job then we need to find you another more qualified Vet, perhaps a Specialist.

Not to scare you but this is life threatening. Please keep on top of this, he can go down very quickly.

I hope he gets well soon. I would not ever give him any steak or liver treats or anything else fatty. Fentanyl is a very strong medication. I would just watch him if he appears very drowsy and watch his breathing, that medicine can depress the respiratory drive (if you take too much).

last night i though he was worse, this a.m. he finally got rid of (poop) some mucus, runny and formed poop. Now he is very active. We have a appt .this a.m. with the internist. i called at 3 a.m. told them he is wining at the end of the bed. they want me to remove the patch because he is hyper or down. i am not going to ...get in a biting match with him. when they do his blood they can take it off. He was so rapped up yesterday, when the little vacuum(tede-bare) got a thing of suff off the floor, i tried to get it, he really tore in to me.
i have to pick my battles today. meds, ear drops, poop wiping,get the patch off him self, all just piss him off. So I am not letting him eat so we can see if it is pancreas or something else.

but i thought he could mot have beef at all. but they are thinking of changing his protein. any more help is welcome

I know how you feel. All the poking, poor little baby. We are all praying for his healthy and speedy recovery. I think you are doing the right thing, I can tell you love him and are trying to make him better :)

I am not sure what the diet for pancreas will be. Mine never had it, but I am sure others here on the site can help you with.

I just know that in general - cooked or process fat is extremely difficult for them to digest. So you always want to make sure what you feed is low in fat. If you are feeding a cooked meat, it should be a lean cut, boiled and then rinsed very very good. ;)

I just wanted to add to be sure not to let him chew on that patch (I'm sure it is where he cant get to it). A lot of people have overdosed and died by eating the gel out of those patches. Sorry about that, I know you already have enough to worry about, but I thought it was important enough to tell you......I hope he get well soon.

my dog had pancreatitis and now inflammatory bowel disease in the small intestine from the severe panc so the best food i found i purina ha as it is a hydrolized diet - the other recommended was ultra z/d by pescription hills and my dog itched like crazy on it

NOOOOOOOOOO treats nothing but dog food - they will take kibble as treats trust me mine do if it is all they get and i did the whole treat thing until dexter almost died and it cost us 10k over the past year to try and get him back to normal as he has relapses of ibd

I have never heard of a patch and would not use one on a dog - if he has pancreatitis you need to find the best 24 hour care around u as it is extremely painful and food should be restricted for a few days and fed through iv and on iv or the cycle will not stop - i messed with a vet for a week and then he got worse and cost me 3k for her to mess with him and she still wanted to mess with him and i took him to the best facility where he could get 24 hour care - he was so bad they had to do a plasma transfusion.

When they get pancreatitis they cannot have any food as the pancreas gets inflamed and can eat the other organs and damage them this is why dexter has small intestine ibd

Have them run CPL I test immediately. Dexter did not have blood or diarhea he only had vommitting but there are different signs.

The meds he took were, famotidine (pepcid), metronidazole, metoclopramide, sulcralfate, etc but never a patch never heard of this and I was dealing with the best facility as vets come all over country to study there after vet school it is like emergency vets on animal planet.

They saved him --- do not let a vet mess with him go to an internal medicine doctor which it looks like you did and that is who took care of him. If i had not taken him from that vets office I think he would have died.

The true test will be they should never recommend i/d for your dog. If they do they are not real experienced with pancreatitis.

Hang in there but get the cpli test and demand it as that is the only way you will know if you can rule out pancreatitis - I did ultra sound along with it but later found the cpli test is even more accurate than the ultra sound. Ultra sound works when pancreatitis is extremely severe like dexter - amylase and lypase test is not accurate as when dexter was bad they were good and when dexter was good tests were bad so not accurate at allll

ibd is inflammatory bowel disease which can be something that causes pancreatitis or an after math of it so we are not sure what happened with dexter - he has it in the small intestines and cannot digest certain foods. The pancreas when it gets inflamed can cause deadly toxins and affect other organs in the body mainly the small intestines as the food passes through it in to the the small intestines. Hi fatty foods can damage the pancreas and once they have it they can have an underlying condition for life so one high fatty thing can cause an attack. Dexter had a plasma transfusion from another dogs plasma through the jugular which cleansed the bad toxins out faster and saved his life. He also had iv fluids through jugular as well as goes through body quicker. If anyones dog gets this and the hospital is not familiar with plasma transfusion keep looking for the one that knows about it as it is the latest and it saved dexter - it is only in severe cases though. He kept relapsing so after the first relapse we opted for this and it saved him. They said more and more yorkies are coming in with pancreatitis:( The yorkie before dexter 2 weeks before they said did not make it and this is why they wanted to do most aggressive treatment on dexter as he relapsed and it was severe on the ultrasound. It was very sad - I wished someone warned me about treats - i had no idea

dwerten's advice is entirely correct. This is a painful and dibilitating disease which leads to colitis which is also called ibd, (she initially began with pancreatitis) and a lot of the vets are not specialized in treating. An internist is specialized and exactly what is needed. My vet didn't know how to properly treat, and believe that her lack of knowledge caused Sophie to suffer. Went for a second opinion, and told she was too frail to have further testing. I would read everything on the internet, cross reference the recommendations and drugs. They seem to want to push Science Diet since it is handy in the backroom which is necessarily not a good idea.

Yorkie's parents, please take immediate action if blood ever appears in vomiting or stools.

Yesterday I had a meeting with his internist (who put him on the patch) and the other meds. we agreed to keep him on the patch. and the- tylin powder, the papcid a.d. and reglan , we stoped mirtazapine. he was to groogy. This was what I said in the doctors office I wanted to do. I ask for a shot under the skin to keep him hydrated. after he got all poked. I thought he would be in so much pain, I Left the patch on. We did A big blood testing that is going to take a week to get back... so. white rice and boiled chicken no fat cottage cheese. When I got to my moms house. he got on the foot stool from standing I saw him nod off like he was so doped ,then he caught him self and stood up........ well no no no... I got the stuff and took off the patch washed him up. held him for 2 hours while he slept. the got out the blender and prossed chicken and rice. 1 teaspoon ..2 hours 1 teaspoon a little at a time... he started playing with his toys. we came home at 6. played a little ,he went to bed with me. At 3 a.m. i noticed he leaked a little on the bed. took him in to dads room while i cleaned up. he went out for a pottty and then back to bed . 5AM there was a licking all over my face... some one was looking for his bully styx.... well mom cant do that,,, so I have one of those real bones that they put junk in all cleaned and washed out. I took some no fat cottage cheese and rice smashed up stuck it up in the bone. he was happy for a hour working on it, while i got up and made breakfast. he ate 1/4 cup and looked like wheres the food MOM. so I went to work he went back to gramas today he was a good boy all day. happy hungry thirsty. so well see
i am just hoping for the best and trying to control him and not stuff him. when he keeps looking up with tthose pretty eyes:animal-pa

To clarify for everyone, the fentanyl patch or durogesic path is a transdermal narcotic pain medicine. It is a slow release pain management medication that lasts 5 days. At the emergency and specialty vet hospital i work for we use these patches on most of our patients. All our orthopedic patients get one put on after surgery and the owners take them off when the 5 days are up.

Now what you were describing before sounded like the patch was just too much for your pup and its a good thing you removed it. A small percentage of animals cannot handle the amout of drugs contained in the patch and they need to be removed. Your pup will stop acting so "high" now that the patch has been taken off. In case you didn't, make sure you really scrub up that spot where the patch was so your pet doesn't ingest the remaining gel on the leg.

Good evening and again, so glad that you are seeing a specialist. I remember when Sophie was on liquid pain meds and her reaction frightened me because she wouldn't be able to stand and just looked at me with her drugged eyes. However, it did help her pain threshold but reduced the amount because it was just too powerful for her since she had lost so much weight.

This is a very difficult time for you and your sweet baby. Thinking of you and realize that we pm'd the other night. I need to keep a notebook handy to write down names, user pup's.
