Possible Head trauma... :( :( :( :( yesterday was the worst day ever... can easily be the worst fathers day of my life. Little missy and I were playing around with each other, and she went underneath the coffee table, she saw my clip in my hand and she decided to attack my hand (its like a small banana clip, with like teeth-lookalike) well, missy likes attacking those clips whenever she notices one.... and unfortunately she jumped right at my hand and the clip clipped onto her little paw and she barked in pain and i believe she was scared from the incident (she was underneath the table when this happened) and she JUMPED up, backwards and i believe hit her head hard on the bottom-top of the coffee table and she just froze.... her eyes were open, and her tongue was hanging out of her mouth.... it was literally white... i freaked out, my sister freaked out, and my pa rents took missy and tried giving her water and my mom took the holy water out of the refrigerator and rubbed some onto missy's face and put it on her tongue.... they drove her to the emergency clinic right away because they knew she was still alive, since her heart was beating still.... but apparently we didn't find her breathing which led me and my sister to freak out even more. Missy then woke up in the car, and was blinking, started licking my mom, and she wanted to sleep right beside my sister, so she got up.... but she was somewhat wobbly. They eventually got to the clinic and one of the vet's said it is pretty uncommon for her to react like that.... is that even true? anyways, she stayed overnight at that emergency clinic, we picked her up like an hour & 1/2 ago and had to bring her Vet... the emergency clinic took blood tests and all these other stuff.... came up to around 800 bucks, and she will be getting x-rays, and possibly staying over at the vets... which will be 250 bucks. The blood test was taking last nite but it hasnt even been picked up to be transported to the lab or something... i was disappointed about that. I am having a reallyy stressful time couping with this. Has anyone experienced this situation--related to this, or know of someone who has experienced this? Please keep her in your prayers.... please. What do you guys believe will happen? can this eventually be cured, if in fact it is a head trauma.... I just hope theres no bleeding... :( :( this is so sad and depressing... arghh:( I really can't stop crying for her, because shes so small.... she just recently had spayed, so that was a depressing time for her...and now this?? how much more can this little girl take.... it's so sad, i feel so bad...i really. Poor baby :( :(.... |
If there was bleeding in the head, guys... wouldnt she be bleeding, possibly, from her nose or ears?? She wasn't bleeding at all, just went into some sudden shock... stiff as ROCK--literally! it honestly looked like she had died guys.... scariest moment ever! i went insane in the house, while everyone was looking after Missy (my mother, who has never really been interested in pets--usually afraid of them) was so GOOD with Missy... she was so cool & calm, and just praying---putting holy water on her... continued to pet her and care & love for her.... as well as my father... he was holding his head---was totally losing his mind as well, because they LOVE her so much guys... she's like their daughter to them, seriously. Seeing that PICTURE of her lying on the floor, stiff as a rock, with her eyes and tongue out was scary as hell.... Just thinking about it makes me cry, and million of goosebumps keep running over my body. :( :( Please God help Missy recover safely!!! :( We've asked the Vets questions as well, but we aren't getting the best answers--- i am not satisfied nor 100% relieved yet... i need YT help and comfort! |
Oh honey, I'm so sorry! How scary for you. I think it's a very, very good sign that she "woke up" while you were still on the way to the ER. It could be an acute head trauma that will resolve quickly. Sort of like a football player that hits his head, is knocked out, needs some recovery time, but comes back full force after a few days. Please keep us posted and I'm wishing the very best for you! |
Hope your baby is better Perhaps, she had a concussion. A momentary loss of conciousness is one of the symptoms of a severe concussion in a human. I guess it would be the same in dogs. They are just like children, no matter how much you protect them, stuff will happen. I would think that hitting the coffee table would not be a blow to the head that would be hard enough to cause a bleed in the brain. |

I hope you get some answers. |
POOR BABY !! I wouldn't think hitting a table could cause trama like that - hitting the floor yes but a table ?? Maybe it's a concussion ? I would be losing my mind too :( and sending her get well wishes asap !!! Please keep us posted on how she's doing ok ? |
Iam so very sorry this happen to your baby, I will keep you both in my prayers.hopefully its just a bump on her head and she will have a bruise. |
Poor baby, hopefully she will be better today. I will keep her in my prayers. |

The only difference I see big time, is her breathing... :( it seems to be faster, and not too good. |

Yes---I hope so. It wasn't that HARD the hit... but we knew she hit it when she jumped from the clip, clipping onto her paw. Poor baby freaked out... all because of me. I kept cursing at myself, I even broke that stupid pathetic clip and threw it away, I couldn't stand looking at it. Like Wylie's Mom said, the football comparison. I surely hope it is some minor thing. I am just feeling for her so much, because she's been out of the Vet's place just last week, and now she's back! :( :( Thank you all for the wishes & prayers-- I really do appreciate it, and these answers are making me feel much better!!!! My power upstairs,w asnt working, due to stupid construction...so I was really peeved off cause I wanted to come on and get some answers & comfort from you all. You guys are always great help. Thank you. |
Sending prayers your way for Missy. |
OMG. Poor Missy! I hope everything is okay with her. I know you feel bad, but you took care of the situation as best you could. I'll say a prayer for your baby. XO |
Thank you hun :( I truly do feel bad. I feel like a horrible owner. I am so sorry for the pain I have caused her. I shouldn't have had that clip on my hand.... ugh, why?? :( You guys don't understand how scary and dreadfrul it was to see her stiff as a rock like that.... negative thoughts were scattering all over my head.... I was going crazy, and I've had for only 4 months now. :( I hope she comes home soon.... real soon. :( |
We just called. The blood test hasn't arrived yet, and the X-rays have been taken. Front receptionist is waiting for the Vet & the results. |
Oh how scary! I got a tear picturing what you described! I'd be like you and run in the other room while my husband "made her better!" I will keep Missy in my prayers....poor baby! I hope you get those results soon and I hope she was just ... I don't know, knocked out for a second like what happens to humans if they are hit in the head in the right spot? I don't know? Its bizzarre that hitting the table could have caused anything so serious! You are not a bad owner! You were just playing and she was having fun! Theres no way you would have known something like this could have happened!! Keep us updated! Sorry the ER vet didn't give too many answers....seems like an xray would have been an obvious start over blood work? But what do I know? LOL |
my prayers are with you and your little one. i would have freaked out myself |
Thank you all.:heart to I can't even stay with her by myself. Since we had to pick her up from VEC, we stopped by our place because her Hospital wasn't open yet. My mother had to go send papers to a construction worker on site, and my sister had to take a shower....and I told them that there is no way they are leaving me alone with Missy because I am so insecure ever since this accident. I just couldn't stay alone with her.... I am not in the greatest condition. I haven't even ate yet..... I don't even feel like it or else I am gonna get sick. I just keep getting these horrible flashes of Missy lying on the floor every now and then and I start crying. It's so hard to cope with. I'm so devastated. I really hope it's nothing too serious. I still can't believe this happened--- i really can't believe it. It's like a nightmare.... poor little baby doesn't know whats going on. :( :( |
***Update My sister just got off the Phone with the Vet. He finally got the blood test and said that everything is nearly perfect except for the high level of her Liver? Or somewhere along those lines, he said it is highly due to the stress level she has gone through (poor baby) and he said that it is definitely nothing to be concerned about. He looked into the X-rays; there’s no broken bones/fractures nor is there any internal bleeding. He said she looks great, walking around better…. And overall: great progress. He said we will most likely be able to pick her up @ 6:00 pm. It is currently 12:25 pm here in Toronto. Thank you for the prayers---and please do continue! God bless you all. Good people! |
I suggest following up on the high liver level. Ask what exactly is high....and ask if she can be retested in a few days. Compromised livers run in these babies. Not saying she has one but I would definately be following up on any liver related issue. Maybe Im wrong and there is nothing wrong woth her liver and having a high level is normal after trauma but still.....its soooo common. I am having mine tested yearly for liver issues after researching and listiening to peoples stories on here. Im a paranoid person when it come to the babies... I hope your baby is feeling better and is perked right back up. You did a great thing getting her to the hospital asap....:D GET BETTER BABY! :aimeeyork |
I'm glad your baby's results are fine. What a scare!!! |
Thanks, I'm glad too. I miss her soo much. Quote:
He did say it's nothing to be highly concerned about. But when we go pick her up... I will definitely ask him again about it. I do believe it is normal, due to the trauma and such. She's been in and out of the hospital over the this week, since she got spayed as well... So it's very stressful for her, I can imagine. If you guys have any questions that I can ask him regarding this, please post away! We are calling back right now.... forgot to ask him about the difference in her breathing. |
It sounds like she could have had a seizure when she hit her head. Some dogs have seizures where they completely freeze up and become catatonic for a short period. Most likely what happened is that when she hit her head, her brain hit the top of her skull with such force that it bruised her brain. Unfortunately head trauma can cause brain damage or hydrocephalus which can't be diagnosed from an x-ray or blood tests. Ask your vet if he did a neurological exam which will help to determine the extent of the head injury. Keep a close eye on her and if she exhibits any neurological symptoms associated with brain injury, then you will want to do further testing. Hope she gets well soon!! |
Just reread my post and realized I might have scared you. I should have added that just because she likely bruised her brain, does not necessarily mean that she has brain damage, its just a possibility. She could have bruised her brain and have no long term effects at all. Talk to your vet about it. I'm sure she will be just fine with a good mommy like you to take care of her. |

Considering the fact he wants us to pick her up around 6:00 pm, should be good news. Otherwise, he'd recommend her staying overnight at an emergency clinic for care. So, I am assuming taking her home is a good sign. She was also eating at the VEC. If it were serious, I don't think she would have wanted to drink or eat. And if the Vet thinks is serious, as you mentioned in your first post, then I am quite sure he would have done more testing, seeing how we explained how brutal she looked when the incident occurred. Anyways I am still praying her.... My heart is kind of aching after hearing your 1st post... lol :thumbdown I did write down questions on a piece of paper that I want to ask him--- because I tend to forget once I am at the hospital! |
Missy's mom. Glad your little one is doing better and I hope it all works out well for her. Just a suggestion; in a few weeks I'd have your vet run a bile acid test on your little one. High liver enzymes could also indicate liver shunt. I know he said that it's due to trauma and that could be but for the small price of a test I'd have it taken to be sure. Liver Shunt it something every Yorkie should be tested for. Elaine |
Just reading this now...How incredibly scary for you guys!! I'm praying that your baby is okay! I can't imagine that...I'd be freaking out too. |

You know, i've always questioned whether Missy has Liver Shunt to my sister. Missy tends to rub her head and body on the couch or blanket every once in a while, and I read somewhere hear that it can be a sign of Liver Shunt. So if it's high like that, there's a possibility for sure? I will tell him to definitely test her for that. Can you further explain other symptoms or the effects/possibly long-term ones with Liver Shunt? |
So sorry didn't mean to upset you. I had the exact same thing happen to a little rescued puppy before. She bruised her brain as I said was likely to have happened in your case. She also acted exactly like you mentioned which was from a seizure. She was taken to the vet and all of the same tests were done. As long as she is acting normal your vet will allow you to take her home with instructions to monitor her for any odd behavior that may indicate a more serious injury. More than likely he cannot do the tests for brain injury because an MRI would need to be done and mosts vets do not have that capability. Usually you have to go to a university but the MRI would not be needed as long as she is not acting strange. As I said, ask him if he did a neurological exam. This will tell you if brain damage is likely. I was just saying what some of the possible complications are and what you will have to be on the watch for as some neurological symptoms take awhile to develop. Your vet will tell you the same thing. BTW this little puppy had no long term problems and went to great home at 6 months. |

It's ok, I am just a bit paranoid and really not in the greatest condition to hear about other bad complications that caused this. I will definitely ask him about a neurological exam--Thanks for that info. |
