Yorkie black sticky discharge around vagina-MY DOG IS SCOOTING OUT OF CONTROL... I am trying to find someone who has experienced their yorkie having a sticky tar-like discharge on the vagina. The hair adheres and when i remove and clean my little girl she then scoots out of control. we have recently had urine tests to discover crystals. Vet says she could be producing kidney stones... we may do xrays but not sure if we will find anything. vet suggested putting cranberry juice in her water. (mixing 1/8 cup per 1 cup water) or today i picked up cranberry pills. 1/4 pill as she is just 6 lbs. i gave it to her tonight for the first time so we'll see if this helps. i am stumped becasue the vet doesn't give me clear answers... my dog has trachea collapse when we take a visit to the vet and i am just so stressed worrying about her. i have put neos. ointment on her and that helps dissolve this tar-like substance forming on her private area. we are currently in the process of switching vets. Now she will scoot when it is time to empty her anal glands... but she will scoot also when i try to clean her vagina area. i am sorry that i don't have a picture of my girls posted just yet. :-( i just joined a few minutes ago and i am gosh....so desperate. anyone... ever experience this with their yorkie or has any advice. please let me know... |
I don't have personal experience with this, but I Googled it. That discharge could be a sign of infection. Insist on a culture of the discharge. Here is just one type of infection: http://www.beaglesunlimited.com/beag...rucellosis.htm |
I'm not sure about the discharge, I'm sorry I can't help you with that, but it sounds scary!! As far as the stones, I have lots of experience with stones...You need to have your vet send the crystals/stones to a lab to find out what kind they are. This is extremely important, as treatment for different stones is completely different. Cranberry juice is not necessarily good for all types of stones. A blockage could occur, and your girl could be in a worse condition. I would also have the vet do an X-ray AND an ultrasound as some stones don't show up on x-rays and only show up on ultrasounds...Depending on the types of stones, she may need surgery because some stones do not dissolve regardless of diet change... Some stones do... It sounds like you may need another vet if he/she is not willing to do these vital tests... |
t/y thanks for responding! I will check out what you sent. If you would like to know more about our little Samie... here is where we are at... The vet told me today that some dogs produce mucous and this could be what this tar-like discharge is. She wants us to try adding cranberry juice in her water to see if this would help maybe lower the ph in her urine... ? in the meantime i am getting ready to make a vet replacement :-) just getting nowhere with this and don't know what else to do. i suggested maybe xrays and maybe possible blockage but the vet says if there was blockage (stones in the urinary trach) that she would stop urinating. and she still is urinating. so?? tonight i gave her her first cranberry pill. we discussed that we could do pill or juice. i opted for the pill. so again tonight she starting scooting so i put some neos. ointment on her. she has stopped scooting but still panting some. i keep distacting her by giving her icecubes (that i first run under water for a minute or so to shrink them down) :-) she can't be scooting tonight because of her anal glands being full????? i mean she was just at the vet last Friday and she has been scooting ever since. BUT...they also removed all of the tar like substance that had formed around her vagina while we were there. she scooted immediately before we even left the vet. mind you,,, there was nothing to remove from her anal glands. i had got all of it when i had done it. but sometimes i just can't get all of it. and once a month i let the vet do it. Also whenever i had cleaned her lightly with a wash cloth and warm water on her vagina she would scoot immediately. its really mind boggling to say the least? we switched her food 3 mos ago to a purina spec diet NF kidney control formula (per the vets request) and recently started her on Chlorpheniramine 2 mg- twice a day for her allergies.. we were giving it to her with the canned NF food but it seemed that her anal glands were needing to be emptied in like 2 wks or less as opposed to maybe once a month when i gave her a bath. the vet today seemed to tell me that the canned food had nothing to do with her anal glands filling quicker. regardless we discontinued giving that to her. and it was so hard because she just LOVED this canned food. OMG! loved it! so anyway-i told the vet that the sticky (whatever it is)?? adheres to her vagina and then her hair around it is stuck and matted together on her vagina--it seems to create a barrier and she scoots less. Then when i trim the hair and remove the debris she scoots more. so i don't know what to think anymore? the vet said to keep removing the debris becasue it could harbor bacteria. I did notice that before we introduced the canned NF food she would have a drier substance-almost dry/gritty. in the same area but instead of black it was a like gold/brownish gritty/drier...almost like dust instead of tar like. -i know this sounds crazy :-) but it was kind of like corn dust. the dry food has a lot of corn meal in it.. so it makes sense to me especially since her food is filtered though her kidneys... so here we are- she finally is asleep right next to me. i almost tried to see if her anal glands maybe were full again. this evening..And she hates when i empty her anal glands. half the time i have to do it more than once because she is just so teeny weeny that i have a hard time finding them. and even once i do find a little to clean out -they are barely full. yet it stops the scooting. at least for a few days. but like i said- i really don't think her anal glands are the problem. it's this substance around her vagina. i am hoping she will let me sleep thorugh the night becasue God only knows...she has woke me up scooting in agony at times and then the breathing starts... and then the coughing. she also suffers trachea collapse if she get over heated, excited or stressed. the allergy med helps with that... since she can breath a little better. we can't put her on anything stronger for her allergies since they contain steroids.. and steroids impact the kidneys... it's such a vicous cycle we have here. i don't know what to do. this vet we go to is quick getting us in and getting her taken care of since her allergies and excitement effect her trachea collapsing and we literally can be at the vet for 15 min tops or else we risk losing her. (almost happened last year) once we got her home and calmed her down she was better. (very scary for me to say the least) but i want to switch to a new vet we found and i am so scared. the last time we tried a different vet she gave samie something to calm her and it made her so bad that i don't know how she made it through that. she could not breath and all and she was gasping in my lap the whole way home in the car. i thought she would be a goner by the time we made it home. but i am not happy with this vet. i don't think she knows what is wrong with our little dog???? our other yorkie is having her teeth cleaned at the new vet next week (if i don't chicken out and cancel the appt :-) i am just really nervous about them doing this since they have to put her under anesteshia. i want to bring samie to the new place but we plan to meet with the new vet and let them know what is going on with samie in much detail before i risk taking her there. don't want another bad experience like last year. i am off to put my weary body/mind to sleep for the night. anddddd i am babbling away... :-) thanks for reading if you made it this far :-) i just don't know what else to do for her. a year of worrying, wondering, thinking she will be okay... oh the stress. she is going to give me an ulcer the way i worry about her. :-) |
the vet has told me that she is not a good candidate for surgery because of her trachea issues. you can read more of what i posted. it's quite long. but gosh i appreciate your response. i am so worried about her. i am worried because i gave her a small 1/4 amount of the cranberry pill tonight. my vet was so firm with me today.. she says with her trachea issues we are blessed she has made it this long. i will write more- i am counting hours of sleep i can get for the night before morning is here and i have to work early. thank you so much!!! i appreciate all of your info very much! |
:idontknow, but is always nice to have another vet opinions, sorry you have to go through this, prayers are on your way:hands: |
Wow. I have no advice but I do know we have a lot of very knowledgable people here. Bumpimg this up for you and sending prayers for you and your baby. Best wishes, welcome and good luck. :animal-pa |
Friday 6/15/07 welll.... Samie let me sleep through the night. Her panting/breathing not any better. I get up to feed both of them and give them water. i am just getting ready to head out the door for work and here we go again... samie is scooting like mad. what to do?? what to do? ok so i am now cleaning her anal glands...not a thing to clean out. nothing at all. she scoots for a second or so immediatey afterwards and then she goes to lay down on her blanket. my husband stayed home with her all day (he had a dead battery/car this morning so he worked from home) which was great because i was so... worried about leaving her alone all day. All day long with her and he says that she did not scoot even one time. ok... so YES i am relieved... BUT- this will happen again- it's just not over. I wish it was but it just is not. This has been going on for 1 year as of June 1st. i can't imagine what i did to her this morning ?? there was not anything to empty? all i know is for the moment she is not scooting.... and i am not attemting to mess with the discharge today because it will make her scoot if i clean it off. i am so glad i found this site- i appreciate the responses and prayers more than you can imagine. xoxoxo.... |

I'm so sorry that your baby is going through this!! How awful... |
Poor little Samie! I think it is a good idea to change the Vet. Mitzi has such a discharge once in a while and my vet gave me "animax ointment" to apply and even put some in her vagina. IMO it is not necessary to clean her anal glands that often and with all that cleaning and washing off the discharge her skin is probably irritated and itches or hurts. Also she might have an infection in her vagina and that itches too (as we all know...) Another thing is that she might be allergic to corn and corn products. A lot of dogs are. Best thing is to feed her raw meat or slightly cooked meat with just a tiny bit of oatmeal and to give her a raw oxtail bone to chew on. Mitzi had problems with her skin for almost 9 years and we tried every dog food we could find. Now since we switched to raw and home cooked her skin cleared up, she scoots no more and she is a healthy happy dog. I hope you find help really soon and give your babie kisses from Mitzi! :aimeeyork |
Poor mommie. :( I agree with Mitzi's Mom that you probably don't need to empty Samies anal glands so much. I've had dogs all my adult life and only had one that had to have its glands expressed ocassionally. Not all dogs need to have that done. Some are able to manage quite well on their own. I would just let the warm water of her bath clean the area when you bathe her and also keep the hair in that area really short. She may even enjoy sitting in the sink in warm water for a few minutes. Take her to the groomer if you need help cutting the hair but I think it will really help her to not have the area disturbed so often. Make sure she is getting plenty of water. I'm sure you are.:) I hope your baby gets better soon. Tink is sad that Samie is so miserable and sends her some hugs and good wishes.:love-hug3 |
Oh Hun, I have to agree with everyone else, that you might be doing more harm than good. I think you should stop expressing the anal glads, I think you should stop trimming her hair around her pee area. She probably has very sensitive skin and it must be irratated. I am not sure what food you are feeding now, but if it has Corn (corn in any type of text) and By-Products (in any form of text) I would STOP it immediatly. Raw food diet is what I feed my 2. Either www.naturesvariety.com or www.morigins.com If you must feed a Dry or Wet, try www.naturalbalance.com - they have a Duck and Potato flavor, which I do believe is very good for allergies and sensitive issues. Also, www.canidae.com is a very good dogo food. I also feed my 2 - Dried Cranberries and Dried Blueberries everyday. They get about 3-4 of each. I buy them at Trader Joes or Costco (Human Food). I also feed 1/2 teaspoon of Organic Low Fat Stonyfield Yogurt and I sprinkle some extra Probiotics that I bought from the fridge section in The Vitamin Shoppe. I also feed 1/2 teaspoon of Orgainc Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. All the things I have mentioned, you can do a google search and find lots of stuff relating to overall health benefits. Relating to your girl, my female in the past would have 'scooting' if I too trimmed her hairs too short, or if the buzzer was too close and gave her 'razor burn'. She too gets a small build up of 'blackish', but my Vet just said it is normal, dirt like, and I just need to wash her gently more often. Again, I think you should stop the anal glands and stop trimming her hair, just rinsh her privates under the sink with a gentle baby shampoo. Try changing her diet too, NO CORN and NO BY-PRODUCTS. Please keep us updated and I hope she gets better soon :) |
wow... if you could SEEEEE the tears in my eyes after reading these responses. omg... to be able to talk to all of you that have yorkies as well. All of you know exactly how i am feeling and how hard it is when we experience problems with our yorkies. i worry so much about her and i try to understand that they are pets and pets are not made to be in our lives forever. i just hope that she can be with us, even if it's just for a little longer. i just want to find out whats wrong with her. i know she has trachea problems but it's this scooting problem making her stressed and uncomfortable. that brings on the panting and occassional trachea coughing sounds. She is so cute and playful, and mopey at times too... sleepy little dog that she is. :-) she does not look sick at all when none of this is going on. only when she is uncomfortable and she scoots, her eyes all watery. her allergies are real bad. These tiny little dogs have entered my heart so deep... and to find all of you on this website that experience the love and happiness that thes little angels give us all day long..... there is nothing to compare the love a yorkie gives you. not to any other dog. not a lab or german shepard. Yorkies "are" like children. they communicate with us... they love to be pampered and spoiled and talked to and trained and rewarded and cuddled with.. (gosh i could go on and on) I even work with a few girls that just can't relate to me. they think i am crazy when it comes to my girls... Gosh- i only have but 2 pictures of them on my desk. I try not to talk about them too much... but they really don't understand why sometimes i am trying to rush home after work to my girls, why sometimes my stomach is in knots all day because samie got me up 4 times during the night before panting heavy and making noise from her trachea. she does this when she is uncomfortable and only when we remove this tar like substane or if her anal glands need to be emptied. oh how i worry about her. my family and close friends all live in Ohio, so no one is able to come and check on them. and i just don't like to leave them alone for any longer than they are. I work from 8-5 and they are alone from 7am-6pm. they have their own room and they listen to music while i am gone all day. oh yeah- the girls i work with think i am crazy. someone i work that had a yorkie until this past New Years Eve (they had to have their dog put to sleep) so sad... but they used to leave on a tv and have dog movies play while they are gone. (hey- only us yorkie owners :-) My best friend does not even understand what i am going through with this. BUT ALL OF YOU DO!!!! and i am so LUCKY I found this site!!! you have no.... idea how much this means to me?!?!? I tried to post a picture tonight -but i guess i didn't do it right. i am working on that. i can't wait for you to see her cute little face! we are going to take her to a different vet!!! definitely. it's just hard because the new vet needs to know that we can't be there long. i get scared because last year we tried to change vets and it was a brand new place. what a nightmare! it was the vet and the receptionist working on her when things went wrong. i didn't know this was going to happen though. so the thought didn't cross my mind. had no idea samie would get so bad and have a hard time breathing. she gave something to relax samie and it made things way worse. like in slow motion. god it was awful so that's why i am so scared. i will stop here for now :-) i know i can get winded... and type a lot. sorry xoxoxo.... thanks so much for the responses! BIG HUGS TO ALL OF YOU!! sorry my posts are soooo long... |
My girl has a mild case of CT too. I keep her belly and under arms shaved to keep her cool. I keep her weigh down as well. If she has an attack, I lift up her front arms towards the sky, this seems to keep alot. POne time she had a really bad one, it last all night, off and on...The next day I put her in the bath for a while, and I kept the door shut, the steam in the bathroom opened her up. The Vet says, if she has a bad one like that again and I can't stop it immediately, I have to bring her in for meds :( We are a family here, so nice of you to come on board ;) Welcome :) |
Well I don't have any advice on this subject, but thankfully you have gotten some good info and links from others. I just wanted to say that it IS wonderful to find others who understand how you feel and worry about your babies!! No one I know really gets it either...not like we do. So I understand! For pictures, I use http://www.resize2mail.com/ to resize them and then save them to my pc, then upload them here. If you need more specific help, ask me ;) Good luck with your poor baby! I hope they figure it out soon! Trina |
the vet (the one we are currently going to leave) gave us hydromet a year ago to help Samie's trachea but i was always so nervous to give it to her as it's a narcotic. the allergy pill chlorpheniramine helps her breathing because when she is congested it makes her trachea worse. We had an appt today at the new vet. We took our other dog Sadie there for her annual exam. Sadie goes next Friday for a dental cleaning and she needs to have some growths removed. One on her lower eyelid and a big one on her neck. she keeps getting more and more of these growths but vet says it comes with age. Sadie girl did so good at the vet today. she is such a healthy dog. OMG! soooo excited on the way there in the car she was shaking. but on the way home she did better. sadie has her dental next Friday and they totally put me at ease with that. I am still a little nervous though. But they told me everything that goes on and how careful they are and i am going to trust them. This new vet specializes in small animal medicine. and Sadie does need her teeth cleaned sooo...badly. She has two bottom teeth that are just hanging on that need to be pulled. I know for a fact these 2 bottom teeth cause her much discomfort too so as hard it is for me to come to the realization that my girls are getting older. sadie will be 10 this year and lil' samie 9 next month.. :-) i hate for her to miss those 2 bottom teeth so bad. but in the long run she will be much more comfortable. and her breath will be so much nicer smelling when she gives kisses. i will keep in touch and let you know how it all goes. Oh and the vet also gave me medicated wipes. she says it sounds like samie might have a slight yeast infection. we are going to try the wipes and if she still has problems we will get her in. i stressed to them today that we have to be super quick if we take her there because it's scary. i also asked them about the hydromet the other vet us a year ago. and she said it would help her. well i gave it to Samie when we got home and it did.. it really really helped her- it worked in like 15 minutes - it was AMAZING HOW FAST IT WORKED!!! her coughing settled down COMPLETELY. i was scared to leave her today by herself... but i wanted my husband to go with us to the new vet so her could see why i also wanted to switch. they are like a vet hospital. very professional and i was glad i found them. i of course went and got the tour and lots of info before we made the switch. they are more costly than the other vet but i want the best care for my little girls. :-) samie was mad we left her at home all by herself, she was smelling sadie up and down and barking at us like crazy when we got home. :-) they are both SOUND ASLEEP at the moment... :-) i imagine the hydromet made samie a little sleepy and Sadie girl had a big day today. she saw lots of doggies and she was just so HAPPY! now she is exhausted! talk soon :-) love & hugs! Renee, Sadie & Samie xoxo... |
If its a yeast infection you could try natural yogurt on it ..sounds kind of strange but it does work! |
feed the yogurt or place around her vaginal area?? I think the cranberry pill i gave her helped too. i might give her another one today, always uneasy about giving her something. only one scoot this morning and it was after #2 this morning. Wierd? this has been going on for a whole year. wouldn't mind trying the yogurt on her. maybe something with the enzymes in the yogurt it kills the bacteria in this sticky tar like stuff. it totally makes sense ya know. |
Finally Figured Out How To Post A Picture Of My Little Angels! :-) |
Yes, you can feed her about a tsp. of non-fat or low-fat yogurt...We use Stonyfield organic non-fat. If you don't have stonyfield, just make sure that it doesn't have any artificial sweeteners. |
You said she has allergies, and the scooting could be from those. I really think you should switch her food. I know a lot of vets recommend foods made by Hill's and Purina but honestly none of those foods are any good, even the prescription ones. I'm starting vet school in the fall so I feel like it's okay to say that I think most vets don't know much about nutrition. These big companies give vets a lot of free products and donate a lot of money to the vet assocation and even do most of the nutrition teaching in school. But with all I have learned about dog foods, I would never feed my dog anything made by purina or hills or any other company like that (and by being a vet student I can get hills and purina foods 80% off). If you really want to feed kibble or canned, go with a premium brand like Wellness, Innova, Natural Balance, Canidae, Merrick, Nature's Variety, etch (there are other good ones out there). A step above that would be home cooking (but make sure you get all the nutrients your dog needs in it) I think the best thing is a raw diet. I feed Nature's Variety in venison and rabbit. Raw diets are grain free. A lot of dogs are allergic to corn, wheat, and other grains (esp. corn). A food with a lot of cornmeal in it is so bad for your dog. It's just a filler and cheap source of energy. I really think your dog is probably allergic to the food you're feeding her. I would really look into something higher quality. |
Oh, and I wanted to say that Lacy is almost 3 years old and I've never had her anal glands expressed. Dogs normally naturally express them when they poop that it's not something that has to be done. Only if your dog's anal glands won't express themselves or there starts to be problems with the anal glands do they need to be expressed. A lot of groomers do this routinely, but I won't ever have my dog's expressed unless there is a problem. I have heard though that once you start expressing them, you have to keep doing it. I think you probably are doing it too often though. I don't think I would do it more than once a month |
Purina Prescription Diet NF Kidney Function formula. Thanks for the info. I am checking on the brands you suggested. Cost is not a factor and i do want to feed my girls only the best food available. my husband is hesitant on the raw food. I am too i have never heard of that until reading on this site. very interesting. we were feeding Natural Choice -small bites and before that Hills Science Diet. a rep in Petsmart was telling us the benefits of switching brands. I noticed that the new food was not as greasy. they ate that food for almost 5 yrs. After finding this discharge on Samie last year and "I" suggested the vet do a urinalys... so they end up finding crystals.... very slight crystals- they told me. the vet tells me that we can take xrays on samie and it could be stressful on her due to her trachea issues. she suggested giving the food time to work- maybe up to a month or so. but she said that the food is better for kidney function and the discharge should go away. give this food time to work though- she said i would not see a difference immediately. so we make the switch and it wasn't easy that's for certain. this food is bland and no beef or chicken or any flavor at all. (yes- I actually took a nibble of it and tasted it... didn't swallow it but wanted to taste it) crazy........ i know... :-) i figure hey this has been going on almost a year... what's another month or so... if it helps.... good. if not- then we will have to figure out a way to keep her calm for xrays. the "vet tech" said i could give her something called "ACE" (for short) aceprozipan (spelling wrong) but i researched that and lets just say that i did not find anything that would make me want to give her something to make her limp and very sleepy.. no way in the world do i really want to give her this. I only kept reading online about bad experiences with ACE. so anyway- after a good month and a half on this new food, "I" suggested another urinalys and they still found some crystals... I showed the vet tech her vaginal area and she says- it's not too bad... the only thing they said was start adding a small amount of cranberry juice to her water. something about they would like to see the ph in her urine lower. we communicated a lot though with only the "vet tech's" never the vet. SOOO...after i see this discharge forming once again i call the vet clinic and i aske them is it possible to have THE VET call me? they say sure. take my number and she calls the 2nd day later. this was last Thursday and she asks me a few questiong about the discharge and what color is it? where is it at? i tell her about the panting, discomfort, then it leads to trachea coughing. she immediatly jumps the gun and procedes to tell me that for the past 3 yrs...that she has seen our dog "she has always been at the scene" whenever we bring samie to have her anal glands emptied. and she said that samie turns blue every time. she says with samie's trachea issues and we have been blessed to have her with us 9 yrs. i was trying to tell her that i simply thought that the scooting and discomfort is causing samie to pant more and breathe worse. she wouldn't be having trachea issues i don't think if she wasn't in pain. i only know this because samie had a major leg surgery 3 yrs ago and they sent me home the day i picked her up WITHOUT pain meds. my husband had to go up to the vet surgery center to get her pain pills. that poor dog panted to the point where she could not breathe. Eyes bulging like crazy! oh my gosh she was so bad! so we give her her pain pill but to then later realize that it was on her bottom chin hair. we had a hard time giving her the pill and we never realized that she disn't even take what we gave her. i had her on the counter looking at her and trying to calm her and we realized the pill was stuck in the hair on her chin. she had spit it out and we never knew she did this. well by the time we realize this it's 4 AM. she turned totally blue and we rushed her to the EMERGENCY VET. they kept her on oxygen..and overnight.we finally got her pain under control and she was fine. still totally miserable. that surgery was hard on her. so this is how i know that pain and discomfort makes her pant more and then that leads to heavier breating and then eventually her little gaspy sounds she makes. i can hear them in ther chest too if i am next to her hugging her. BUT...back to the vet's conversation with me about how samie is while at the vet... first of all- samie has done "a little better" since she is on allergy med's these past 3 months and she (i didn't think) has turned blue either of the last 4 or 5 times we have been there for anal expressions. she lasts for a good 15 minutes as opposed to maybe 3 or 4 minutes as she did before we started the allergy pill. She gets too excited. it's not that she is scared at the vet. she loves the car ride... she loves people and she gets all crazy excited and doesn't even realize what she is doing to herself. but back to the discharge... for a year i have been complaining about this and the scooting and they always immediately jumped to conclusions with it constantly being her ANAL GLANDS. Why has a whole year gone by and she doesn't know what i keep telling them? I start thinking that the VET probably hasn't even looked at samie whenever she has been there. now this discharge did go away "a little" - like there was less of it and it was not so heavy and thick and stick. i figured the new food was helping until this appeared again now. so that's why i demanded the the VET call me because i am needing to find out what this could be once and for all. her and i talk for a while and she tells me some dogs produce mucous. she never asked to see it or have a swab taken of whatever it was??? (the new vet today though did) Samie's hair is long under there. i trim it maybe every 3 mos or so. one time i shaved it and i think it may have helped her. maybe she is having this problem because of her hair being too long. maybe it does need to be shaved. not shaved raw but i hear a #10 blade. i groom them myselfs so i want to try this on her but not just yet. i am going to wash often too in the meantime. like every 3 days or so get her in the tub and just rinse her good or shampoo lightly. we were at the (NEW) vet today and the actual vet -not vet "TECH" spent 30 min or longer talking to us about so much. i can't wait for her to see samie and she what she has to say about her. as soon as we got home today i gave samie less than 1/4 of a cc (maybe 6-8 DROPS) of the hydromet. she was PRESCRIBED 2.5 cc's. even the vet today told me to start with 1 cc. well i was too nervous to give her a whole 1cc so i opted to just experiment with a super teeny tiny amount. so -15 min pass and samie is quiet and not drowsy. sometimes she will come in the kitchen and stand next to me and i can hear her breathing... and today i didn't even know she was in there. she barked when we were outside. she "did" however.... scoot one "little" time. i thought for sure she would scoot more. but she didn't. she ate good today... i gave her a little bit of the canned food for the first time in 2 wks (after the vet today reassured that this would not make her anal glands fill faster) i want to look into a different food perhaps. but with samie and the kidney... crystals... discharge... i think she really needs to be on some sort of kidney function food. i don't know. the thing that i don't get is both of our dogs are on this new food and both vets have said that it's ok. so... i am going to read up on nutrition. i definitely know that i cannot commit to home cooking and i am hesitant on the raw foods. oh gosh.... these posts just keep getting longer and longer... i think we have it all covered now though :-) this has been quite a vicious cycle for us. i have been stressed. i have worried... and i still do. this can't be good for me. but i think we will get to the bottom of things once we get her to the new place. oh by the way- i still have 216 exchange(cell phone) i kept my same phone number because we moved to texas from ohio... anyway the vet called me on my cell phone last week. we talked for 18 minutes and get a load of this... she sent me bill- yeah... we rec'd it in the mail today- for 54.00. can you believe that? she never at any time told me that she would charge me for a long distance phone bill. i didn't think anything of it??? my husband opened it up and showed it to me and he said- we are SOOOOOOOO DONE WITH THIS PLACE!!! nice huh... okay- i am signing off. p.s. I apolygize if i sound like i am all over the place in this post... :-) i have glanced at this a few times and it's so long that i cannot read it one more time before i send it. :-) it's been a long day today and i have been on the computer a long.....time :-) time to get a few things done around the house. |
I think I would be looking into new vets. It never hurts to get a second opinion. I really hope you find out what's wrong with her soon. If you post on the general forum or health and diet forum about foods, I'm sure there are some people that could suggest a good food that will be fine for a dog with kidney problems and allergies. I have a cat with allergies (food) and Lacy has flea allergies...so I know how hard it can be to find a food for a pet with allergies. I don't have any experience with the kidneys though but I'm sure a lot of other members have. I know you're really worried about your baby. |
Can't wait for the new doc to see Samie and help her with her problem. Please updated us when you can. This has got to be just miserable for her. :animal-pa |
I am so sorry you are going through this and I can relate as i have two yorkies. One with severe allergies and the other who had a severe case of pancreatitis which led to inflammatory bowel disease. I now deal with specialists such as a dermatologist and and internal medicine doctor and what a difference. I have been frustrated with vets and if i am not happy i move on to another one and take my records. I really hope you can get someone who can help your baby. Dee Dee had a brownish stuff around her privates and it was immediately diagnosed as a yeast infection and she was put on antibiotics - clavamox i believe. Also, Dee Dee does the reverse sneeze when excited or agitated from itching so you are right the stress will cause her to feel more agitated and affect the breathing. Have you tried using hypoallergenic baby wipes fragrance free as i use those on dd's paws daily for her allergies. Also neosporine is a great antibacterial that the vets and dermatologist recommend for when dd itches herself raw from allergies - i put it on her and it is instant relief. I feel so bad for you as i can completely relate after having the worst year with my boy yorkie dexter and 2 years of allergies with my girl yorkie. You just want to pull your hair out and try to keep from crying. Hang in there Oh also the ace is a sedative to calm them down. I hate giving meds as well and always look them up on petmeds.com when i get home from vet. But if she is so worked up from being agitated it is not horrible to use to calm them as the more agitated they get the worse it will get for breathing. I had to give one time when dd had a severe allergic reaction and she would not stop itching no matter what we did we bathed in oatmeal, she had a dexemothesone shot, and we gave her ace for one day til she calmed down as the vet said when they get stressed it agitates them more and they become more itchy and upset. Also, I get freaked out when they get sick and I have learned the more upset i get the more upset it makes them so i have tried to remain more calm and it has helped. The breathing i have heard steam in a bathroom, putting their face in front of a fan, having a dehumidifier in the room they are in to help sinuses, holding them vertical, and massaging the trachea to relax the trachea. DD gets episodes when she takes temaril p for allergies and gains weight. When she is thinner no issues with trachea. I also talk calmly saying it is ok. All things have helped as every night when we come home she gets so excited she gets a little trach issue. Hope this helps as you are not alone - i have cried many of nights with my two and felt hopeless. For Example - easter I had dee dee go into canine hives attack at 2 am and dexter start vomitting at 9 am - it was horrible and a holiday :( Take Care and keep us posted |

SadieSamie, What vet do you go to? i'm right on down the road in Plano and I take my pup to Campbell Park Vet. He was voted best vet in dallas for two years by D Magazine. You might want to try them out. Otherwise, I take my little one to Collin County Emergency Vet on Custer...expensive but have done ok with my little ones. Good luck. |
we were going to Crosstimbers off of Custer Rd. we are switching to McKinney Animal Hospital. they seem wonderful there. they specialize in small animal medicine. I will keep your vet info also just in case things don't work out there. we also plan on moving within the next few years closer in to Dallas. Thank you so much! So hard to believe i met someone who does not live that far from me!!! that's so TOTALLY awesome! |
if you have address and ph# info for your vet i will greatly appreciate it! :-) :-) thanks again! |
