Broken leg?
 

I think Izzy may have a broken leg.:cry8: :cry8: :cry8:
Last night my 5 year old was playing with Cody and Izzy was in bed with me (I was reading a book) and she wanted to get down to play with them.

Well I put her down and she took off running around the corner and my son didn't know she was coming and he stepped on her. OMG she cried and cried and cried. My son cried and cried, I cried and cried. It was horrible.

I took her outside to see if she could walk on it after she calmed down and she just laid there. It was about 9 last night and it was time for bed anyway so I put her in her kennel (my husband thought maybe it would just be spranged and she may be better this morning). Well this morning I got her out of her kennel and took her outside and she still can't walk.

The vet called me first thing this morning (I left a frantic message for them last night) and I took her in. They are going to sedate her to xray her leg. So I had to drop her off. I am so worried about her.

Has anyone else ever had their baby get a broken leg? I am so worried she will never be the same again. :cry8: :cry8:

oh no !! That does sound broken and I hope they can fix it with little discomfort and she'll be ok....SENDING GET WELL WISHES and I'm sorry she's so hurt poor baby :( :( :( :(

update!

Vet just called her leg is broken. She has 2 bones that are broken.
Vet says either I can cast it or surgery to put a plate in it. $1500 -$2000,
I can't afford that. OMG am I horrible? I want it fixed but I can't afford that for her.
OMG I am just crying I don't know what to do. Anyone else had this experiance? What should I do?:( :(

See if your vet will let you open a Care Credit account. I had to do this when my Westie was being treated for cancer at Cornell. It saved the day for me.

aww sorry to hear about that..i can only imagine the pain she, your son and you were feeling...

oh poor Izzy....can't imagine how painful that is. In my mind, you have no choice but to find a way to pay for the surgery.

Opening up a care credit account is one option if your Vet won't allow a payment plan on his own. Any other credit card you can put it on?

I am sure I am just stating the obvious but she needs her leg fixed:eek: I do not see any OTHER options surely you have a credit card? Or can get a loan? poor little baby, I hope you find help soon.

I spoke to the vet again. She said that Izzy has a very good chance for a full recovery without the surgery if we keep her from jumping around. I will go in every two weeks and they will check it and put another cast on it each time.

Please keep her in your prayers. They will be putting her cast on this afternoon.:(

What a tragic accident. Hope the cast works and Izzy is better soon.

I feel bad for your furbaby, but your son must be HORRIFIED!!!! He is probably feeling so darn guilty....Poor thing. I know if I even bump on of my dogs or anything I feel so bad...I cannot imagine what he is feeling or what he will feel when he sees her in a lil cast...She will be fine had a cat with same situation and chose casting being he was 13 and I did not want him to go under anesthetic (sp?) he had to be casted a lil longer than anticipated but a 100% recovery!! :) Please give them both a big ole kiss and hug from Bella and Diggy!!!!! :getwellso :nursing: :cry8:

oh no, im'so sorry to hear this. I hope she gets well soon and I hope she gets used to the cast so she can heal soon!!! I'll pray for your baby's recovery and for your finances. At least you don't have to pay for the surgery right now.

Yes my son is devistated. He is so upset all he keeps saying is "I knew we shouldn't have gotten her" and "It's all my fault." He feels absolutely horrible. I just hope he doesn't get even more upset when he sees her cast.

I pray that this cast does give her 100% full recovery. We will just all have to try and keep her still (as much as you can with a 6 month old puppy).

Did the vet think that was the very best thing to do for Izzy??? I 'd hate for you to have that done and still need the surgery later. It might end up costing you more in the long run. I hope Izzy gets all the help she needs!! Good luck to you !! My thoughts and prayers go out to Izzy!

Poor Izzy and your poor son! Bless your heart, it's rough either way you turn. I hope Izzy has a speedy recovery and I hope your son realizes that accidents happen. It couldn've happened to any of us and I hope he can forgive himself.

Please keep us posted.....And again kisses and hugs for both!! Does the puppy ever bite him too hard...maybe tell him, just like she doesnt mean it when she bites too hard....she knows he didnt mean it either?! Accidents happen. :(

I hope the cast works well for you - actually I'm gonna go out on a limb here and be positive and say "yes, it will work!" :) Tell your son not to feel too guilty about it. It's just one of those things - it could've been any of us that it happened to! Good luck and keep us posted! ;) Theresa

I have a puppy that is placed (Dallas) with bigger dogs (aussie 35lbs) the Aussie and he were playing and the Aussies paw hit Dallas leg just in the right position to break his wrist...he had a $3000 surgery to implant a plate and was in a cast for 6 weeks...he has healed and back to his sweet normal playful self. He will require another surgery to remove the plate in time but for now he is doing really well and would never know it happened...

There is hope just keep him calm and confined dont let him play for a couple weeks....

It hurts me just thinking about this whole thing----for all of you.:(

In 19 years of breeding I have had 3 broken legs, casting the leg does
not work because you need to immobilize the puppy. That means in a crate
and only out to poop and pee. We tried this on a puppy once and after 3
weeks we had to go in and do the extended fixator, 5000 dollars later she
still has her leg.
I am not a rich woman, I raised 3 sons after their father passed away on my
own but I found the money and I am still paying for it alone,cancelling my
trip I take every year to NY because the dogs come FIRST. It is no different
than children, you find the money if they break their leg, they are your
responsibility.

I agree with this post. She is still a puppy and her bones are still growing. I think that not doing the surgery at this time may result in permanent damage. Have you spoken with some other vets and gotten an estimate from them on how much the surgery would cost? I know that it is expensive, but you owe it to her to get her the care that she needs. If she were your son, would you make the same decision? I know that this is breaking your heart but there are ways. Have your tried Care Credit as others have mentioned? There are also organizations out there who will help you with the surgery whom you do not have to pay back. They will not give you the full amount of the surgery but they can help get you there. If you are interested I can give you some links. Prayers go out to you, Izzy, and your son.

Yes it can heal without surgery, you will have to keep her crated and hold her a lot so she feels loved and not like she did something wrong.
There are a lot of dogs that get broken legs and the toy breeds are the worst.
I have had rescue dogs that we took in and cared for that had been surrendered because of a broken leg and also have had two of my own that had broken their legs. And none of them had to go on for surgery. So there is hope for her. But you must be very serious about the crating and not allowing her to run around that is a must. And lots of loving lap time, just be sure when she is in your lap you have a harness on her so you are certain she will not try to jump down. You always have a hand on that harness. Also a E Collar so she won't chew the cast off and make a mess.
That is a must too. Then when you are holding her you can take that off, because if you keep one of those collars on too long it adds heat to the ears and then you will end up with an ear problem so give her some time in the lap with no collar and lots of love.
Sending positive vibes your way that she will heal nicely without having surgery. Do keep us posted on her progress.

My vet does seem to think she will be good as new without surgery, but it is a MUST to keep her from jumping around. I had already decided to do what you suggested about lap time.

She usually naps during the day anyway. My worst problem will be Cody. He will want her to chase him and such and I will just have to stay on top of it. I am a stay at home mom so I will be able to watch her all the time. She will be crated more often as well. Which will be fine cause she likes her crate. She feels very comfortable with her crate.

Trying to look at the bright side of this (if there is such a thing), maybe I can focus on potty training more since she will have to be stuck to me now.;)

I had a boy break a back leg (horse stepped on him, so I was just glad he was alive!!) The vet put a splint on it. The splint is taped to the leg. Each week we would go back and the vet would examine, or x-ray it and then resplint it. He got to where he HATED going in the car because it meant the vet's office and the dreaded tape pulling his hair. They tried to be careful, but it still hurt. Anyway, it did not slow him down much. He would still run around and either drag the splint behind him or later he would actually walk on the splint. My husband started to call him "peg" for peg leg. This dog is fine and healthy today. The only way I can even tell which leg is to look for the tiny bald spot where the splint rubbed. I know back legs are not the same as front legs, but hopefully this will make you feel better that she will probably get better. Good luck during the healing process. Are they saying 6 weeks?

Yes Kathie you have made me feel TONS BETTER. Just hearing that others have had this experience and it turned out great is such a help. I am almost to tears every little bit.
The vet is telling me 4-6 weeks. So I guess it just depends on how well it is healing as to how long it will actually be. Do you think I should have her leg shaved?
