Wylie scratching his eyes raw I noticed Wy's right eye was really starting to look irritated - so I took him in yesterday. The vet didn't know if it was a primary infection (ie, something perhaps broke skin there and became infected) or allergies. He's never had allergies before and I know they can develop any time. He's had a bit of back foot biting, but not excessive. For those w/ allergies, have they scratched around their eyes till it's red, raw, and even a bit of blood? I may have to get him a hood! And, can it affect only ONE eye bc that seems strange to me. I'm thinking that during play, maybe Marcel broke some of Wy's skin and perhaps it became infected. But, long story longer, I guess my question is does this sound like allergies? |
We haven't had to deal with allergies with Miko, so I'm not sure, but I wanted to bump this up for you. I hope Wylie starts feeling better. Hopefully, he just broke the skin somehow and it's not allergies. I have allergies and I know how miserable it can be. |
i wish i could help... i think Layla has allergies.. her eyes are watering WAY more than usual and more guck has started to come out of them... i'm hoping it is a seasonal allergy to something outside... i think we are going to see the vet soon! |

Ann, have you tried some eye wash? |
I haven't tried eye wash, but I do have some prescription ointment for his eyes twice a day. I will try the wash once his more raw areas heal over a bit. Thanks Katy! |
How is he now? I noticed armani has been biting his back paw lately too. He also tries to bite his butt.. I think the hair on it is getting rather long:( good thing he sees a groomer on friday! |
Otis has been diagnosed with hay fever/allergies. He's on hydoxyzine twice daily. He was biting/chewing his tail and paw licking. Vet said in between his pads was red and inflammed. The best thing would've been prednisone, but they can't because of his possible liver situation. He seems to have good days and bad days with it. Good luck with Wylie, poor babies, you can tell they are just miserable. |

Wylie's issue was diagnosed as either a primary infection (ie, something broke the skin, became infected, he scratched at it) or a secondary infection (allergies caused his eye to itch, he scratched at it, became infected). Clear as mud huh? We treated if w/ antibiotics and an eye ointment. I do think both my guys have allergies. |
Otis just finished his antibiotic because he had chewed an area on his tail and it was a little yellowish. He had the hair all matted on his tail and tucked his butt under. Are your boys on an antihistamine. It's taken over a week but hopefully we're on an upswing with the medicine. Good Luck |
It could be conjunctivitis (sp.) My girlfriends dog got it and it started from bacteria and now the dog has an ulcer on her eye. She is using ointment too but the vet says no drops because of the ulcer. She cant see the ulcer because it is under the eyelid but the vet stained it and could see it then. I have read if it is allergies it will be in both eyes, not just one but who knows. |
My girls have allergies too. Izzie's eyes water, mostly in the morning. And they both scratch at their faces. Not a lot, but enough to make me scared they could sctratch their eyes. It is that time of year:( The vet said to bring them in if it gets worse. I hope Wylie's eye heals soon. |

Oh and if it is some type of infection and you have other dogs, be careful not to spread it to the other one. It could be contagious. |
Hopefully it will pass with the summer :) Armani is so hot cuz his hair is so thick that he wont even go outside.. or actually he goes run for 2 min comes in, asks to go out again 5min later after laying on the conditioner vent!!!! lol |
