| Please Help Me - Advice, suggestions Hello. I have been a lurker for a while but never introduced myself. I hate to do it on these terms. Sorry! Benji will be 3 years old on July 3. He is about 4 lbs and very healthy since I got him at the age of 3 months. He is such a joy and we love him soooo much. He was fine when we went to bed Sunday night. Prior to Sunday I started crating him again at bed time because he had been having accidents in the house as we slept (he usually sleeps with me every night). The crating was helping (he never goes in his crate). However, I had not been crating him in quite some time because he was pretty much house broken. He was not in distress and seemed to love it in there like he did before. Yesterday when I came home from work my daughter said there was something wrong with Benji. He had been kinda hunched over, his head hanging down. Almost like he had a crook in his neck. He was able to stand and turn around in his crate - but I actually started to think the crate is now too small for him and it caused a crook in his neck or stiffness. I took Benji into my room to examine him and pressed his tummy - that felt fine. He has not vomitted, coughed or anything like that. He does not look sick at all. His tongue looks fine and he has been eating and drinking normally. I moved around all his limbs he seemed to be fine. No limping or anything - just the head hanging a little. I tried gently moving his head around and I got a little wimper out of him. So I just massaged his neck and back for a while and he seemed comfortable. I thought, his neck might be strained from the crate possibly being to small. He went back to lying down in my bed and a few minutes later - let out a whimper similar to one that you hear if someone accidently steps on his paw or something. He has since done that 3 or 4 times since yesterday. He will just be sitting and let out that noise like something hurts him. I could not stay home from work today and take him to the vet because I have a new job. I am soo worried about him and plan to take him in to the vet when I get off. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong with Benji? Any suggestions or advice. All is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Gosh, I'm stumped. I wish I could ease your mind. I wonder if he was trying to get out of his crate, got his mouth caught (or collar?) on something and was pulling at it for a long time trying to get loose? Do you think at all that his recent accidents could indicate a UTI or something?

| Take him to the vet asap, please. Any time a dog is showing signs of being in pain, it's important to get it checked out. It might be nothing, but it's worth it t find out I hope he feels better

| They might want to do an x-ray or maybe a urinalysis since he's been having accidents...I really don't know what it could be..

| He could possibly have something stuck in his throat or intestines. If you can't take him to a Vet. then you should at least get someone else to do it for you because that baby is in pain and needs to be treated ASAP!! |

| Thanks! Hello everyone! I want to thank you for all your comments and concerns. I am pleased to report that Benji is doing much better. I took him to the vet yesterday after work. Benji hurt his back somehow. My vet says it was a disk, but not to worry its nothing permanent. He says it did not come from the crate. He believes Benji just may have landed wrong (Benji does a lot of jumping on and off the bed all day long). He immediately knew what was wrong when he started examining him. He said Benji was hurting. He showed me exactly were his back was hurting at and how arched it was. Also Benji did not want his hind legs manipulated - indicating that he had a back ache. Benji was given a Cortisone shot for inflammation and another shot for pain. It was also time for rabies so I got that too. I was given some pain pills to give him at home. He took his first pain pill this morning. I had to bribe him to take it. I wrapped it up in a little piece of ham and the first time Benji spit out the pill and ate the ham. LOL. I gave him a larger piece of ham with the pill wrapped inside and he took it fine. thanks again everyone - you guys are awesome! |
