Advice please for my puppy I'd welcome your advice please? My puppy is 12 weeks old, she weighs 2lb 2oz. Yesterday tea time she began to have diarrhea, twice last night then 3 times this morning, very loose, no blood. I haven't changed her food, she's on Beta puppy with a little chicken or scrambled egg. Being very worried, I rang my vet this morning but they can't give me an appointment till tomorrow afternoon! Even when i explained how small & young she is, they were adamant, no vacancies. The woman who i spoke to, think she was the receptionist, then told me to withold all food for 24 hours. I know this is the routine with bigger dogs, I have other dogs, bigger breed beside my yorkies, but I am greatly concerned at the thought of not giving her anything but water with her being so small, & young, she has no spare flesh to lose. I did try to impress this on the person, but she just kept repeating no food. Is this right for such a young, small puppy, do you think I've been advised well? I really don't know what to do & am not happy with it, what would you do? Please could you advise me, I'm very concerned. |
I had similar issues with Reggie when he was a baby. I noticed you feed your dog scrambled egg. That can give diarrhea to some dogs. Try some chicken baby food and I know that they can also eat cottage cheese which is fairly gentle to their tummies. I have given my yorkie small amounts of Pepto when he's throwing up and diarrhea. I know others that probably have a lot more experience and may be able to give more specific advice. The good news is, your puppy will probably grow out of this. Good luck with your little one. |
I dont agree.....Yorkies tend to have low blood sugar. With no food or anything you risk a drop in sugar and thats not good...Do you have Nutrical?? I'd give her that and as far as what exactly to feed her...not sure maybe other can post some recipies. I feed rice, baby food (chicken or turkey) and hamburger. Maybe someone else has a better suggestion but I definately DO NOT think fasting is the way to go, not at that size and weight! Just my opinion tho....Hope that helped! |
Thank you for replying. Yes, it's the drop in blood sugar that really worries me. I'm not going to starve her, it seems much too risky to me. After reading lots of posts previously on here, I've tried to buy Pepto & Nutrical to have in stock for emergencies, but unfortunately I can't get hold of it over here. I've just rung the pet shop in my nearest village to see if they just happened to have Nutrical but they said it isn't available in the UK. Don't know if I could get it shipped but that wouldn't help today. all they could recommend was Lactol, but that's no use as it's just a bitch milk replacement. So I think I'm going to give her chicken & rice once it gets to her lunch time & hope for the best, but i'll keep checking on here for any more suggestions. Thank you again for your help. It's a real comfort to have you listening & helping :) |
I would never hold food from a 12 week old puppy !! Is there a way for you to go to another vet ?? you can use substitutes for Nutrical - honey - Caro syrup ...all found in the supermarket...and maybe trying a little boiled chicken and white rice will help ... |

Hi everyone. Just an update. I managed to speak to her breeder on the phone & he recommended the fresh cooked rice & boiled chicken, on no account to fast her....what a stupid woman at the vets! So I gave her that for her lunch. She was really hungry, bouncing up & down for her dish & whomped it down, so good that she was at least hungry, not refusing food. She slept it off for a couple of hours & has just passed something that is a bit of an improvement....a formed motion, though very, very soft, I thought "good" but then she dripped some liquidy stuff after it. It stinks too! But she hasn't been sick or anything. I've put a little rehydrating salts, for a baby, from the chemist in her water. She's bright now, chasing her toys, so I'll give her some more fresh cooked chicken & rice later. we have a vets appointment for tomorrow just after noon.. There is no other vet near that she could go to, unfortunately. |
Make sure they do a fecal test, and thanks for the update! Good luck at the vets tomorrow. |
Will you be able to get her Nutrical? |
no. i don't think so. i've phoned all the pet places listed in Yellow Pages in reach of here & they've never heard of it. i'd have to get it sent from America I think & that would take a while. At least the vet will see her tomorrow. |
Make sure u get her fecal tests done, those are the same symptoms that Armani had and he ended up having giardia. |
