Not sure what is wrong with Diamond :-( Diamond usually sleeps with me everynight and this morning, I woke up to hear her coughing/choking for at least 10 minutes straight. It was very loud as it woke me up this morning. I also noticed a small spot where she had spit up. The coughing noise sounded like she was grasping for air or had something caught in her throat if that makes sense. I hate to see her going through that but I have NO idea what it is or why she is doing it. I took her downstairs after we woke up, and she continued to do it and even did it outside as she was getting ready to pee. I don't know how to describe it better besides that it is very loud and coming from her throat. She is definitely struggling to breathe when she does it. Any ideas? |
there's a few things it could be but my best recommendation to you is to get her to a Vet today. |

Not being rude here but one of the choices would be kennel cough....don't think waiting a week is such a great thing. Would you consider it a honk? (the sound she makes) and does she gag at the end? I noticed you're in NJ...me too! I'm in NW Passaic County.. |

hey lauren, sorry to hear diamond is coughing. in other circumstances i'd doubt it was kennel cough, but you were just at a meet up on sunday so she may have picked up something. did she do it before sunday? |
Doubt also that it is Kennel cough. Duke had kennel cough, and he coughed almost all the time. He still does if he get excited. Could she have tried to swallow a piece of toy or something? |
Maddie does a snorting/honking thing that sounds like she is gasping for breath. Sometimes she wakes us up at night doing it. Our vet has told us that she has an extra flap of skin that gets dislodged when she relaxes. The snorting/honking is to get it back in place. He told us to rub her throat to help make it stop. |

I do know that when she does it and I rub/massage her throat, she stops doing it. She will do it when she is either running around, on a walk or getting back from a walk, or that one night when she was doing it early in the morning & she was just sitting on my bed. It just gets me worried sometimes. |

If you will try to get her to relax.... she will probably do fine... My shih tzu does that all the time..... rub her throat tell her its okay ... I have heard if you blow in their face they will stop.... I think that sounds kind of crude so I have not done that.... I just pet her and calm her down and she is fine... alot of small breeds do that... |
Sorry, I can't really offer much advice because I haven't experienced this. I do have a suggestion tho- do a search on reverse sneezing. I know some people with yorkies have problems with this and maybe the symptoms are similar to what Diamond's are, and there might be some advice on what to do about it. Let us know what the vet says Thursday, I hope its nothing serious and that everything works out OK soon. :) |
oh poor baby diamond . . please keep us posted. Hopefully it is nothing to be alarmed about. Both my babies are sending warm kisses :) |
my boy today is going to the vet for a cough. he was ck'd last week and it is not kennel cough. the vet gave him some meds but everytime i gave him one, 2 hours later he got sick. so i stopped so he is going back today. i hope everything works out for you. |
Yogi and Bogus have both been doing this for a week. Yogi had a spell night before last and finally vomited a little bit. They aren't sick. I remember last year around this time, Yogi did the same thing and we have had problems with allergies, so I'm thinking thats whats happening. |

i asked my vet last week when i took vinny and he said dogs don't get allergies. i did not think that was right. i have heard of dogs getting allergies. he also said when dogs get allergies, it shows on their skin. so today when i go, the office knows i do not want to see that vet again. |
i came back from the vet and vinny has a throat infection. so i got the meds. i hope everything turns out ok for you |

i'm having an allergy week too. I hope everyone is feeling better soon. |
http://ezinearticles.com/?Dealing-wi...gies&id=188923 Lisa, go and read this web-site...last year when Yogi did this, our Vet kind of blew me off and said, "settle down, its only allergies, just like we get". So he started giving him small doses of Benadryl and it stopped. Within 1 day of stopping the Benadryl, the syptoms returned...it was only during this time of year and in the fall:rolleyes: . So, I'm a believer of them. Just read, or better yet, take the article to your Vet.;) |
Diamond - appointment Hi Everyone :animal36 Diamond and I say thanks for all the well wishes and suggestions    We went to the vet today since I wanted to get Diamond checked out and she was due for her yearly exam which included her rabies vaccination  She is so brave! I love my vet too, he is very loving & nurturing :D Anyway, he felt her lungs and throat & said they feel fine, actually he said great. I explained what she was doing and when she was doing it and he said he is pretty sure it is reverse sneezing...and she does it to clear mucus. He told me to either cover her nose or blow in her face when she does it  Has anyone tried this? At least she is a-okay!  Annnnd my baby is up to 3 whole pounds!!!!!!! I think this is the largest she will get but I am happy she made it to 3! :animal36 |
so glad it just turned out to be reverse sneezing. Alot of small dogs do this. morgan does it and i either blow in her face or give her a treat. that makes it stop. :) and wow, a whopping 3 lbs???? Diamond is HUGE!! how do you deal with such a big yorkie? hehehe. Morgan has hit 4 lbs 4 oz, she's a cow. oh and i tried to quote you but you used so many smiles and tags LOL i had to omit your post |

i will. vinny has been on the meds for a few days and it doesn't seem to be any better. this is so frustrating. he is acting fine, eating, running and playing. it is just that cough that sounds terrible. i just read a thread on reverse sneezing but his does not sound like a honk. thanks so much |
