Keep Jack in your thoughts A year ago, Jack was diagnosed with a perianal hernia. The vet said it could be fixed with a relatively minor surgery, but he also said Jack could quite likely live with it with no problems. I decided to wait. Well, lately it's been giving him problems. Yesterday, he was straining but unable to poop for about 2-3 hours. He refused treats. Didn't want to walk. A lump by his butt that is normally soft was hard. I took him to pet emergency, but in the lobby his symptoms vanished. The lump went down. He started accepting treats. Later, he was able to poop. I decided to wait until today to talk to my vet (waiting for a call back). Anyway, my guess is he'll recommend the surgery. I didn't want to do it last year because it was so soon after his leg surgery, but now feels like a good time. I'll let you guys know what the vet says, but keep him in your thoughts. |
Awe Poor baby Jack. I will say a little Prayer for the baby :( Give him loads of kisses from me, Coco and Rocco and we will all keep him in our thoughts. |
I hope everything works out okay for Jack. Poor little guy. |

all good thoughts coming your way .... hugs from Monday and Friday |
I will keep him in my prayers. Maya has the same thing. She was diagnosed about a year ago and I went to the surgeon and she said we could take a wait and see approach. SHe did say it was uncommon in spayed females and usually affects males more. I have just kept an eye on her. The surgeon said the surgery wasn't bad and she would be on stool softeners for awhile after surgery. I think she told me it be about 1,000.00. |
I hope everything works out well for little Jack. Max and Abbie send hugs |
Jack and your family will definately be in my thoughts & prayers! |
Jack, you cutie pie, I hope you get better real soon and won't have to have surgery. :getwell: They sure do worry us when there's something wrong. Take Care.... |

He originally told me that his main concern would be his bladder slipping into the 'hole' and requiring emergency surgery, but he said it would be unusual for that to happen. He quoted me at around $700 a year ago. Fortunately, I budgeted for it. It was nice to have the advance warning. Still waiting for his call. Arggh. |
Thinking of Jack at this time...poor baby~ Sending you lots of love and prayers!!!! Jack is a strong boy!!!!!! He will bounce right back!!!! We love ya JAck! |
Sadie sends Jack a kiss!! |
aww poor jack. i've seen the surgery for a perianal hernia before and its not a major thing nor does it take very long. I'm sure he'll come out just fine, but i recommend pants for him after surgery cause his little butt is gonna be shaved hehehe he'll have a little monkey butt for a while. :D good luck! |
Jack your in are thoughts and prayers. Hope your feeling better soon. |
Poor Jack! Godspeed to a full recovery. Ozzie has a similar condition but we were advised against surgery. Vet said he would likely have more trouble with the surgery than without. (Cautioned that it could result in complete incontinence.) He was neutered last year with the hope that the cessation of hormones would help it to correct itself but while that did seem to temporarily solve it, it comes back regularly. Symptoms are temporary and don't seem as severe as your guys. (His butt swells a little and I can usually tell before I even check because he is hesitant about jumping on or off the sofa.) Then, it's gone that night or maybe the next day. |
Poor Jack! You and he are definitely in my thoughts and prayers! I'll be watching for updates! |
big hugs and prayers for Jack... And you too Mike! I hope all goes well for little Jack. Puppy kisses from Sadie and Lillie |

Sending get well wishes to Jack and prayers too. AprilLove sends a little furbutt kiss, hoping Jack likes younger ladies....;) |
I just talked to the vet, and he agreed that it sounds like Jack could benefit from the surgery. He said if he was 14, 15, he might advise against it, but he just turned 11 and he's otherwise as healthy as a horse. He said he wants to do some bloodwork and examine him and discuss it with me because the surgery is "not a no-brainer." I imagine he'll warn me about the risks Ozzie'sperson mentioned. Thanks, btw. He has an appointment for Wednesday to be examined. In the meantime, I'll hit the Web and see what I can find. Thanks again for your thoughts, you guys. I've felt guilty about not doing this surgery earlier, and it's always been a concern. If I get reasonable assurance that it will be successful, I think it's worth the risk. |
AAWWW poor little Jack...Bruce and I will definetly have you in our prayers! |

:( I don\'t like bad news. And this is bad news. :( So, when he gets better, I want some good news!!!!! :D Good luck, Jack!!!! |
Poor Jack ---we will definitely be sending him lots of feel better and recover quickly wishes. |
Healing thoughts and well wishes are being sent your way. It\'s always hard to decide on surgery; especially after a beloved animal is still recovering from another procedure. Jack\'s been doing so well for the past year; and in that time he\'s completely healed and recovered from his leg surgery. Don\'t feel bad, Mike, your reasoning for waiting on the surgery was sound. Now Jack is healthier, and better able to withstand the stresses of the hernia surgery. Good luck; we are pulling for you. :getwellso , Jack. |
