Diarrhea for 1 month I got my puppy, Cody, exactly 1 month ago. When I brought him home that day, he was having bad bloody diarrhea. I called the breeder and she said he has been fine before that. I know she was telling the truth because he pooped normal before I left the breeders house to take him home. Later that evening, he pooped out some hard bright green plastic. So I assumed that was what caused the blood. Poor little guy! I called the breeder and she said that some of the older dogs tore up a toy and he must have got a piece of it. The blood and diarrhea continued for 2 days, and I took him to the vet. They put him on a stomach medicine, on canine I/D prescription diet food and medicine for Cocidia (sp?). While he was on this medicine, everything was great! Normal stools, eating and playing. Once he was done with the medicine, I started to ween him back onto the Eukenuba puppy food. Then the bloody stools/diarrhea returned. This time the blood was really bad. I took him back to the vet and he said he has a lot of bacteria in his intestine. So he gave him Flagyl to cure it. I also put him back on the prescription diet food. Again he was fine while on the medicine. He also was normal for a few days after. I still have him on the prescription diet. Yesterday the diarrhea returned but with no blood. He poop has been very soft. I don't know what to do. Its getting me worried that he has a permanent condition. Even the prescription diet gives him diarrhea! Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts? Thanks! |
Oh, poor baby:( Sounds like his intestines are real sensitive now. My Hoku was like that after Kalani gave her giardia and that's why I finally switched to home-cooking and that seemed to do the trick. |
Try feeding him chicken and rice for the diahrea. Hes really had it too long though and the Vet should be able to give you some answers |
I initially was feeding him chicken and rice but he would not eat the rice at all. He would just pick out the chicken, that is why the vet suggested putting him on the Prescription diet, which you can only get from a vet. It is for dogs with sensitive stomachs. He eats a lot, plays constantly and acts like a normal puppy. I have an appointment for his 3rd set of shots on Saturday, so hopefully he can make it through that time so I don't have to bring him to the vet again! |
Some people give canned pumpkin for diahrea too. It seems like your vet would be worried about dehydration |
I have a hard time getting mine to eat rice too! But what works now is... A chopper or mini food processor. Put the chicken and rice and chop chop chop away, until the rice and chicken are tiny tiny mixed up pieces. IMO Eukenuba is not a very good food. Try to get something that doesn't have "By-Products" or Corn. Natural Balance has some for sensitive tummies (you can get it from Petco) http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/ Best of Luck! |
That's what I would recommend, try the chicken and rice again, finely chopped. Maybe even put a little bit of grated carrots in there and some olive oil. Once he gets used to that you can start adding more veggies and trying different meats. |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks, I'll try that. Eventually, once he is over this problem, I was going to try and put him on Solid Gold. I've heard that is pretty good for Yorkies. Hopefully he gets better soon! I tried to attach a picture of him on St. Patty's day, not sure if it worked. |
Aw he is a real cutie |

Could the "green plastic" have been from a "greenie" treat? It looks like hard green plastic when it goes through the intestines? If so, it could have done permanent damage to the intestines, which Greenies have been known to do. He could still have some lodged in there. Maybe the doctor can do an x-ray to see if there is an obstruction of the bowel or intenstines. Also, my dogs love pumpkin (from the can that you buy to make pumpkin pie). Only a spoonful though. It hardens their stool. |
I don't think it was a greenie, I know what they look like, the plastic was almost a neon green color and greenies are darker than that. I'll ask the vet what he thinks when I take him on Saturday. Unless his symptoms get worse, I'll bring him back earlier. I'm stopping to get some pumkin and pedyalite to make sure that he doesn't get dehydrated on my way home tonight. |

Such a rough time for your puppy. Are you seeing a vet hospital or Petsmart? Blood in the stool can be very serious and not normal. You see this condition when they have Pancreatitis and it is very painful. Switching foods is difficult because their tummy is not healed, and trying reading about Flagyl on http://www.vetinfo.com/. Excellent website. Good luck. |
I would keep feeding the perscription diet i/d my girls eat it and they do so well on it |
Do you keep them on Prescription I/D on a regular basis? Oh...and there is no more blood in the poop, lately its just been muddy like stools. |
I just want to mention this and you can do what you want with it. Has he been checked for parisites? If his stools have been checked and they are ok there is a slim chance he may have a male parisite that lingers in the intestines and causes much of what you are describing. They do not lay eggs so there would be nothing in the stools! If all else is ruled out have your vet de-worm him! I know this because I went through this with Buddy for 3months. My vet kept telling me it was the food and I kept cooking chicken and rice and buying different kibble. Nothing worked. I finally went for a second opinion and the new vet told me about the male parisite and suggested the de-worming first before expensive testing. Guess what? In two days flat Buddy was normal again. Let me know. I pray this is what it is. Good luck, I hope your baby is better soon. |
Yes he has been checked for parasites several times and none have shown up. Maybe this is what it is. He has also been dewormed. Should he be dewormed again? I'll mention this to the vet when I take him on Saturday. That would be great if this is what it is! Thanks so much! |
Most vets only treat coccidiosis for 7-10 days. You always will have to go back for another 10 day possible 3 times. It really takes 21 days straight to get rid of in. The stress of a new hpme is enough to bring it on. Then w/the diareah it is hard to let everything be normal because you cant get coccidia all over the house. When my vet says coccidia & trys to give me a 10 day I just say I need 21 days of liquid albon 5%. I actually just order my own on line you can find it in yahoo shopping. If I know Tilula might get stressed - long trip, fireworks, vet-I start her on it 3 days before & continue 3 days after. Instead of paying the vet 70-100 3 times because he doesnt give me enough so that I will $$ Its 9.99 for a 2oz bottle & that should take care of it, 21 days everyday. Hope this helps. I get so aggervated w/the vets about coccidia. It is so hard on the pup & the owner plus all other pets can be effected. They told me adults couldnt but I had a 6 yr old very relaxed retriever & she did to. I quickly found where to buy it on my own after spending about 600 & still having the problem. This is what I found that helped me http://www.beaglesunlimited.com/beag...occidiosis.htm except he recommends the 12.5% which tastes horrible. For these little ones Albon 5% is best they love taking it. Hope your baby is better.:) |

herbal remedy Try Slippery Elm. This can be bought at a health food store. Slippery elm is known to heal wounds outside the body as well as inside (minimal scarring). One of my dogs had diarrhea; I experimented with the amount of capsules until the diarrhea stopped. I also fed yogurt.:animal36 |

I was nervous about it at first but then I said enough time as passed something must be wrong. I have stuck with the new doctor and am pleased with him. |
Thanks for all of the suggestions. Codys poop has just been a little more wet than normal today, not diarrhea and no blood at all. Hopefully he is getting better, I'm going to give him pumpkin and yogurt tonight and bring all your suggestions to the vet on Saturday. Thanks! |
I see you had him on Eukanuba. There is a recall on this. How long was he eating this? Check the symptoms for why their recalling this. |
Some of these little Yorkster kids have the most sensitive digestive systems and will just pass puddles of blood. I would not be feeding the poor little thing any more puppy food. Give him some white rice with veal or lamb for awhile. Dog food is not real food, it's full of meals and chemicals. |
Well, I've tried giving Cody some Yogurt with active cultures and pure pumkin but it still is not working for him. He didn't like the pumpkin by it self so I mixed it in his food. His stools aren't quite diarrhea but are loose. I'm giving him Pedyalite so he stays hydrated. I'm brining him to the vet on Saturday for his 3rd shots so I'll talk to the vet then. Any more thoughts? |
Oh gosh, how frustrating and scary. Poor little fella - he is SO cute. I wonder if there is a micro tear in his intestine? Could the vet totally rule that out? Makes me think if there was a small, bloody tear - it could've gotten infected again and again. Feed some boiled chicken, maybe some pedialyte and a very high quality food like Merrick, Canidae or Chicken Soup. I really hope that vet gets an answer for you!! Good luck, ANn |
What about treats..... My Oliver could not eat even Milk Bone dog treats... he would have very loose stools.... I had to be very cautious about anything he ate... alot of time we get so wrapped up in the food we give them and think nothing of the treats.... Samson my 5 month old gets Honey Nut Cheerios for treat ... he loves them and we have had no problems.... Ollie could eat them as well... Just a thought |
It might be a good idea to blend his food. His stomach needs a rest.Whether its a tear or some type of parasite it needs to heal. When they are so small they don't have any reserves and any rough textured foods could cause a bleed again. Most importantly make sure he drinks water.Sounds like he is active and playing so hopefully he is on the mend.Glad your taking him back to the Vet. :hearts-xx :hearts-xx |
awwww !! i hope that he gets better soon !! poor baby !! :( |
