Snorty, hacking, backwards sneeze? Hi everyone. My Yorkie/Maltese mix has been making this funny sound for the past week or two. It sounds like a backwards sneeze if that makes any sense. I cannot tell if it is a sneeze or a cough or a snort as her face does not change when she does it. It is usually when we are outside or after she has run around a lot. I have taken her to the vet twice since she has had it. And OF COURSE she refuses to make the noise in front of the vet. The vet checked her and said it is not kennel cough or pnuemonia and not to worry. But it still makes me wonder what it could be. The vet told me she thinks she has allergies. I was just wondering if anyone elses pup makes these noises? THANKS!:D |
spanky does it also Hi yes my baby does it mostly when he is excited i was told it is very common in yorkies before i even bought him. my mom was a vet and breeder and has had yorkies all her life and she told me about it sounds like a goose to me. The breeder that we got him from actually gave me some littiture on it and i did some research too, they say it helps to gently massage there neck to get them to breath better I was also told that it can sound worse then it really is. The first time he did it I probly would have panic but i did what the vet told me and it worked. hope this helps you. |
my baby does this too and i read on a thread here before too that if you cover their nose and make them breathe through their mouth it will stop. They get so excited that they probably forget to breathe lol |
I found this on another thread here: "Collapsed Trachea is different than reverse sneezing. Reverse sneezing is when the back of the throat spasms. The dog stands still, stretches out their neck, and often becomes bowlegged while they are trying to get air. It honks, wheezes, and often snorts during reverse sneezing episodes. Often the spasms will cease if they swallow a couple of times or if you close off their nostrils so it has to breathe through its mouth for a few seconds." Don't know if that helps. |
My male does this when he is SUPER excited. It makes me nervous still even after this long, it usually can be stopped really quick by picking him up or just covering his nostril holes! |
WOW thank you all SO MUCH. I feel much better now.     :D :D :D |
Same Here My Holly does this too. I was just on here actually wanting to post a similar thread. She makes it often and she does stretch a lot. Should I be concerned? It usually stops when I pick her up. What is it? I am telling the vet when I go on Thursday, unless it's an emergency of course. I will check back tomorrow. Thanks in Advance. |
oh my gosh....my lil one Rio does it too.... She kind of sounds like a pug when they breathe. But it only happens for a lil bit right when I let her out. Sometimes, snot will spray out (LOL, it's kinda gross but the vet said it was ok as long as it wasn't a discharge color and it is clear) When she runs a lot or she's playing with Sammie, it happens again too... I want to fix it but I'm not sure if it's a phase or what...Rio is only 12 weeks |
frankie and lauren both did it.:aimeeyork |
Peanut has been doing it since he was 4 months old and now he is 10 yrs...he gets so excited it happens....:) |
Wrigley does this too. It's usually in the morning or when she's playing hard. We usually pick her up and massage her or if she gets a drink of water, she's ok. |
Wow I did not realize these little guys did this! I have heard pugs and other shorter nosed breeds do it. But never a Yorkie! LOL. I am glad I found YT! I was starting to think my vet was crazy telling me it was normal! |
So Glad You Asked Sake was doing this and it was happening in the middle of the night - we brought her into bed with us - it reminded me of when my son had croup....the vet said it was allergies....and not to worry...freaked me out! |
IMPORTANT!!!!!! I thought Rio had innocent "backward/reverse sneezing" and actually, she has tonsilitis!!! And is on anti-biotics. Although Rio was doing the reverse sneezing...it was because her throat was irritated. So make sure your vet opens your pups mouth and looks down it's throat to see if it's inflammed!!!! This could lead to pseumonia (sp?) which is way more serious that tonsilitis!! |
I just posted this on another thread. I was at the ER vet with Bonnie last Sunday and it turns out that she was Reverse Sneezing. She had gotten into some snacks in my sons room and we think something may have irritated her throat. The ER vet gave us a print out about Reverse Sneezing. She also told me if you ever have any questions regarding your pets health to use this link (below) because it is the one that the vets use. She said if you do a google search you will usually end up more confused! Reverse Sneezing (Pharyngeal Gag Reflex) Authored by: Becky Lundgren, DVM Reverse sneezing is a disconcerting event in which a dog makes unpleasant respiratory sounds that sound like it is dying -- or will die in the next few minutes. Reverse sneezing sounds similar to the honking noise made by a dog with a collapsing trachea, but reverse sneezing is a far simpler condition that usually does not need any treatment. It is called reverse sneezing because it sounds a bit like a dog inhaling sneezes. The sound the dog makes can be so scary that many owners have rushed in a panic to emergency clinics in the middle of the night. to see the rest of this article see the link below. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Con...S=0&C=0&A=2335 http://www.veterinarypartner.com/ |
Reverse Sneezing Hi guys! Baylee has been dealing with the reverse sneezing for the past 2 days. It is not constant, but usually occurs after he runs or starts to play. How often do your little ones experience this? It usually goes away after I massage his throat. I've also read where you hold the nose and blow down the mouth...that makes him sneeze outward. I don't know...What do you suggest when he has been doing it like, 4 times a day over the past 2 days? Do you think it's from my cleaning this weekend? I'm confused... |
you aren't alone Spencer makes these noises after he has beening running through the house or outside, he also does it when he gets excited and when you play with him and sometimes if you make weird noises to him he gets excited and makes these noises :) |
Okay...I called Baylee's veterinarian, and he called me back (NICE!)...He fortunately heard Baylee making the noise and told me that he had tracheobronchitis. (to be explicit, not to gross you out, it sounds like he was trying to cough up a loogie (if I spelled it right), and as if he could not breath at the same time...his legs spread out, and he had to stop what he was doing-playing, running, etc.) I knew it was not the usual reverse sneeze, not only because of how often he did it, but because I had done EVERYTHING I was told to prevent this...rubbed his throat, taken him outside for fresh air, removed allergens in the house as best I could, etc... ...So, the Vet prescribed him 3 medications, but he combined 2. One is an antibiotic, and the other is a steroid/cough supressant combined. I had the medicine sent to me overnight, since I live 6 hours away from home, where Baylee sees the vet. So far, so good. I've only heard the noise twice. Retrospectively, Baylee did not start sounding like this until last Friday. I took him to daycare (for the first time) last week (on Monday and Thursday)----LIGHT-BULB! So....I've come to a conclusion-NO MORE DAYCARE! At least not at the place to which I had taken him. The antibiotics are for 7 days and the cough supressant is for the same amount of time (I think...). However, if Spencer is making this noise too often as normal, as Baylee was, you may want to have him evaluated. I just found a way around the office visit, because I have a great Vet. :D |
Wow! My dog just did this for the first time today. Emily is always really excited when she goes to the groomer. She absolutely loves her. Today we had to wait a minute when we arrived and of course Emily had to sniff everywhere on the floor and rug. Then she started doing this. The groomer told me what it was.:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
my yorkie has been does this every now and then when she gets excited... my chihuahua also did this for the first time today! when i came home from work they both got excited and did it at the same time!!! my vet had told me when i got my yorkie that it was common in yorkies... was super suprised to hear my chi doing it too! wonder if its small breeds?! |
Hey Ya'll...yeah, I've read where it is common in small breed dogs...My breeder says that she has another yorkie that does the same thing. Awh...they're some interesting creatures. |
