Worried Mommy (Baby Tatum)
 

I took Baby Tatum to the vet today for shots and about 30 minutes after we got back home, my poor baby started throwing up :( :( :( I was SO FREAKED as Stedman never did this...but then again, Tatum is ALOT smaller than Stedman was (even though Steddy is only 4 lbs full grown - she is still ALOT smaller! :(), and of course, every dog reacts differently. She threw up twice (in a row) and I immediately called the vet. I tried to give her Nutri-Cal and she refused it, which she NEVER does - she always laps that stuff right up! So, the vet told me to bring her in right away and he was going to give her a Benadryl shot (he gave me some to take home as well) and he also rubbed some Nutri-Cal on her gums right away. So we did that and got back home about 10 minutes ago and she has just thrown up again :( OMG, my poor baby - I just feel soooo terrible for her and I am so worried. OF COURSE my husband isn't here today :mad: He has been out of town since early yesterday morning and I am just a nervous wreck. She is just sooo tiny and I am a very nervous and scared mommy :(

My vet told me to keep ice cubes in her water for a few days - I put them in her water the minute we got back home and she has been drinking water like CRAZY! I mean almost non stop for the past 5 minutes! Every time I look at her she is at her water bowl :( Please say a prayer that my little baby girl feels better and that she doesn't have to make anymore trips to the vet :( Thanks guys :(

Aww poor baby Tatum, don't worry it's just a reaction to the shot. A lot of doggies have them. Especially when they're as small as little Tatum. She just needs some R&R. I would get her some pedialyte as this will help her stay hydrated. I'm trying to think of ways to keep Rocco hydrated as he's been throwing up too because of car sickness. I bet she'll be good as new by tomorrow or sunday :D

I hope your baby feels better soon! You might try Gatorade, when Wrigley was really sick a couple weeks ago, the vet suggested that over Pedialyte. I think because he said it stays with them longer. I've heard alot of puppies have this reaction to shots, just like kids do!

Aw, I am so sorry to hear that! What shot did they give her and how much does she weigh? Jewelina is really tiny she's 1 pound 11 ounces now but was around 1 pound 9 ounces when she was getting her shots and on some shots my vet would only give her a half of a regular dosage because of her size. The only shot she had a bad reaction to was the parvo booster but she didn't throw up she just had a fever and wasn't interested in food.

I'd be careful with the water, if she drinks a ton of it, it might make her tummy feel worse, especially if she's been puking. Jaden had some tummy problems a while back and my vet told me about the ice cube thing and said to make sure he wasn't gulping the water down since that could upset his stomache even more.

If she won't eat nutrical, try giving her this formula:
1/2 cup half and half
1/2 cup baby rice cereal
1 jar meat baby food, anything but turkey
1 tsp. karo or pancake syrup

Mix it all up and then in a syring fill it up to about 5 cc's or about 1 tablespoon and see if she'll eat that. Neither of mine have ever refused it even when they weren't feeling well. If she'll eat it, it'll give her energy and just might make her tummy feel better. I know as a human sometimes once you start feeling sick if you don't eat anything having that empty stomache with all that bile and acid in there can make you feel worse.

Oh Brooke.. you must be so worried! I'm keeping you and little miss Tatum in my thoughts and prayers over here and hoping she's back to her usual self in no time!!

Why did your vet not give her a shot for her reaction as well as a hydrating shot in her back? I don't understand, especially since she is so small. When our puppy did this on her second set of shots, the vet had her come right back and immediately administered a shot of calming stuff, like benedry called diphenhydramine and then injected her with water between the shoulder blades, which kept her hydrated. I think you should call your vet and ask if your puppy shouldn't be injected with the diphenhydramine for throwing up. Tell them that she has vomited again since you brought her in and that she seems very very thirsty. You have to make it sound urgent, otherwise, they will just blow you off. And with a small dog, you shouldn't take any chances that things might turn into a crisis, just because the vet didn't pay attention to you.

Aw your poor baby :( I hope she recovers soon from this. Keep us updated. I'll say a prayer for her.

Since she is drink the water so well, why not put a little karo syrup in it.

I took Harlie and Hallie in for shots 10 days ago, Harlie did fine, but Hallie had diarrhea for 5 days. Hallie is the bigger of the two.

Ah, poor Tatum. DId she get just one shot or a combination? If it was a combination, you might want to think about getting them all separate from now on.

I would try adding the karo syrup to her water, and try some pedialyte as well. I sure hope Tatum feels better rally soon. Tons of hugs and kisses coming her way.

That's something I forgot to mention! I did get all of Jewelina's shots done seperatly as my vet advised due to her size, no combination shots at all and karo syrup in the water would normally pep Jewelina up back to her "normal" self within about an hour or so....

Oh Brooke I'm so sorry little Tatum isn't feeling well. My girls had shots last week and Trixie had a reaction. I know your probably freaking out since your hubby isn't home to comfort you. Just watch her like a hawk (which I'm sure you are) and don't hesitate on taking her back to the vet if you feel its needed. Pia also reacts bad to everything. She loves nutrical as well but anytime she isn't feeling well she refuses it also. Actually both girls refused everything that everyone mentioned. I had to force food with the syringe. I mixed baby oatmeal and some baby food. Also, maybe some pedialyte would be a good idea to keep her electrolytes up. Maybe call your vet and ask what he/she recommends. I sure hope she gets better soon. When they're that tiny it makes it really scary. Keeping you guys in our prayers.

Thanks girl :( I did go and get her some Pedialtye, but she is REALLY drinking that water - and I don't know if it's because I added the ice cubes and she likes that, or if she is just really THAT thirsty :confused: This was pretty scary for me as I have never been through anything like this with Stedman - he has never even had diarrhea a day in his life :eek: And the only time he threw up was once out of the blue when he was a baby, but it was just the white "foamy" stuff, and it was literally smaller than your pinky nail. And with my hubby not there with me when it all happened with Tatum today (he is here now) I was just a nervous wreck! :( If she weren't so little maybe it would be different, I don't know :confused: but she is just soo tiny and fragile, so I worry...LOTS :(

Poor Rocco - I don't think Stedman or Tatum really like the car either :rolleyes: They don't get car sick to the point where they throw up or anything, but they whimper and whine and yawn every 2 seconds when I put them in the car. I think it because we have an SUV that rides very BUMPY! :mad: What a pain!

Thanks Joy - she only weighed 1 lb 9oz's at the vet today - at first she gained an ounce, and now I think she has actually LOST weight :eek: I just worry about her because she is so so tiny, and my vet said that she will most definitely stay that way. She is just so fragile! She is now accepting the Nutri-Cal from me, but is still refusing any and all food, so if she doesn't eat SOMETHING before SHE goes to bed tonight (Lord knows I probably won't sleep, because I'll be up all night worried sick about her, watching her! :(), I sure will be driving to the store at 1 a.m. to get the half and half, and baby cereal (already have chicken baby food on hand) if I have to. Anything to get her to eat. I am going to try and get her to eat for a little while longer, and if she still refuses, I'll be making a trip to the store. But at least now she is accepting the Nutri-Cal. Thanks for your suggestions and help, they are much appreciated :)

That IS actually exactly what he gave her the 2nd time we went back (after she started throwing up) the Diphenhydramine - I thought I said that in my post, but I guess not...my mind has just been so boggled :( He also sent some home with me and told me to give it to her as needed, every 8 hours - but a low dosage as she is so tiny :( He is actually a great vet (the best in town!) - he is very easy and gentle with her and gives her all kinds of kisses...:wub: He told me to call him in the middle of the night if I had to, even if I was just worried about her and needed to ask questions or whatever, he knew how worried I was :(

Thanks for the suggestion girl :) She is a-ok with the Nutri-Cal now, she is accepting it fine...just still not wanting to eat any food :( :( :(

Thank you so much Dina :hug: I remember your two going in for their shots last week and that reminded me again that Tatum had to go in - I just DREADED it :( I was really surprised though, as she did not make a PEEP when they stuck her - she is my strong little girl! :) Stedman on the other hand, whined and cried like a big baby when he got stuck LOL :rolleyes: :p

I am definitely watching her like a hawk and I honestly DOUBT that I will even be able to sleep tonight :( She hasn't thrown up anymore, but she is shaking like a LEAF and still isn't eating so I am just very, very worried. And it also seems like she can't get settled. She is just pacing and sniffing around everywhere and she is watching my EVERY move. I was holding her for almost 3 hours straight and she was just laying with me, snuggled up in her blanket - but then I put her down as I was trying to get her to eat and she just wouldn't accept it :( She DID finally lick some Nutri-Cal off my finger though, so thank GOD for that! Thank you so much for your prayers girl - we really do appreciate them :(

Thank you EVERYONE for the prayers and the good thoughts. She hasn't thrown up anymore (and never had any diarrhea) but as you all may or may have not read in some of the replies I posted, she still isn't eating well :( Also she is constantly shaking like a leaf (like she is cold). I felt the tips of her ears and earlier they were cold - but they seem to be fine now.

I will probably be up all night so if there are any changes I will definitely make a post. Thank you so much everyone - you are all THE BEST EVER :ghug:

Jewelina has lost weight before and it scares me to death because even for her weight she's just super petite and looks even smaller than she is and while one or two ounces may be nothing for one yorkie, for her, it's a lot. We struggle to gain "half ounces" but she does eat really well and hasn't had any hypoglycemic episodes so for that I'm thankful. I'm sure Little Tatum is the same way and shots for these super tiny ones can be so hard on them. I am SO glad to hear that she ate the nutrical!! :thumbup: :thumbup: That's a good sign and if she won't eat anything else go ahead and give that formula a try and see if it works. I'll keep her in my prayers and hope both of you get some rest tonight!!

Thank you - and yes, that is how Tatum is too. Stedman was small at this age...but Tatum is SO petite and SO fragile. It's hard to tell in pictures, but in person she is just teeny weeny :( Her little nose, tongue, head, face, body...everything! She just scares me to death! I SO thought she would have gained more weight than THIS by now. Her breeder said that she estimates her to be in the 3 (to) 3 & 1/2 lb range - and I hope to GOD that she gets to be AT LEAST 3 & 1/2 lbs...because she just scares the tar out of me sometimes :( Stedman was almost 2.8 lbs at her age...and granted he is only 4 lbs full grown - but still, it makes me wonder, what the heck is SHE going to do if she is sooo much smaller than he was at this age! :eek: :( I know every dog is different, and I am hoping and PRAYING that she will have a sudden growth spurt.

Thank you so much :hug: I gave her a treat and sure enough she ate it (thank GOODNESS!) :D She also ate teeny tiny little pieces of crushed ice - so she seems to be doing ok for right now and isn't throwing up anymore so far. She was still shaking pretty bad though (just like she was cold) so I put a heating pad on her little bed and placed it between two fleece blankets so that it wouldn't get too hot for her. She just LOVES it and as I was telling Dina in a PM, I think she wonders why her blankie got so warm all of a sudden lol.

So...it is almost 3 a.m. and I am still up with her :eek: BUT - I am going to try and get some sleep now. I am sooo tired, my eyes are so heavy and my stomach is starting to hurt - I need sleep! :(

Thank you so much for your well wishes and prayers for my little Tatum :) I know this may have not been a "HUGE" thing...but it was ENOUGH for me! :(
