| Birth Question Here's my situation, we bred our male with a friends female. This is the second time that we have bred them, and the first litter was healthy and fine. Well Reilly went into labor this morning, and delivered a little boy. No one was up yet, and when they woke up and saw that Reilly had delivered a little boy, Reilly was in the process of chewing on the new baby. We have no idea why she would have done this, but she ended up chewing off one of the back legs and the tail. So the owner of Reilly, ran the puppy to the vet where the ended up having to put the puppy to sleep because of this. My question is, has anyone been through something like this, and can anyone tell me why a mother dog would do this. Could she have sensed something wrong with the baby? I am just sick about this. Also, I am worried about Reilly, how she will react to all of this. The vet gave her a pill that is supposed to induce her labor to see if there were any other puppies in there. Its so sad, I just want to know what would cause this. Please help!

| yes, I have heard of this but not expereinced it. Also, i question the 'pill" the vet gave her. should have been an oxy shot. You really should copy and paste this over in the breeders forum. |

| I had heard of this also. So when our girl had her 1st litter a couple of weeks ago, I watched her very closely. A friend told me she had a cocker spaniel that ate all her pups. When she checked on her only the heads were left. The thought of it is just too freaky. |

| Eating them and accidently chewing off a foot/leg/tail is alltogether different. If you have ever seen a cord getting chewed off, you would seriously wonder how more accidents don't happen. Some accidently chew the stomachs out while trying to sever the cord. I feel so sorry for everyone's loss, including the new Mamma who is now going to wonder where her baby is. How tragic to witness such a thing. |
