i've concluded she has kennel cough NO Idea where she got it from.. but after hours of reading on here and the net... it sounds like kennel cough to me... now i don't want to bring her to the vet just yet.. she just got off a round of meds for her tummy. and the last thing her little body needs is more medication in it.. does anyone know some at home things i can do to help her??? does anyone know at what point she needs to go to the vet?? she just has a cough.. plays and eats like nothing is wrong... and oddly it is better when she is running around and playing.. it is when she is relaxed that the coughing starts up... and the nighttime.. oh the night... what long one we had! any thoughts are great! |
Is the cough coming from way down deep.......almost like a goose sound. My Kallie had never had the kennel cough nasal vaccine until an emergency situation and so at 12 1/2 years old she had her first vaccine. She came down with the kennel cough and the cough was horrible.........it was frightening. And when they come down with it, it is my understanding that they NEED antibiotics or they will only get worse!! And that was true of Kelsey. So if you even suspect it to be kennel cough, get her to the vet!!! Don't wait!!! She could have caught it anywhere!!! |
ya,... i caved... we are going this afternoon.. she sounds like a goose! just hackin and honking.. it's horribel to watch.. her whole little body works to cough... so i'm fearing the vaccine.. i 've heard horror storeis.. but she goes to PetSMart to get groomed and i'm positive that is where it came from... wish us luck! |
Yep...it probably is from the groomers. :thumbdown At my local Petco, (which I do not get me doggies groomed at but I used once) they have a great requirement that you bring your vaccination records and they be current before they will groom your doggie...I think it helps keep the pups from getting sick for the most part! but I do not like the idea of a new teenage kid working there every 2 months so I refuse to take my doggies there. I prefer a groomer with lots of experience!! :p or Just do it myself... |
It could have come from the groomers, but she also could have picked it up at the vets since you've been there recently as well as kennel cough is an airborne virus. When she does get her innoculation for this, it is my understanding the the intranasal one is a live virus and many dogs do react to it by getting the virus. The vaccination is not live, but requires two vaccines for effectiveness. It is a bear to get rid of and more a nuisance, though the risk is development pneumonia. A vaporizer should help at night....... |
ya i'm pretty sure that is where it came from. I love the great job they do on layla and we have our "regular" groomer so otherwise i just love it. i wasn't comfortable leaving layla at a groomers house or somewhere that there are not a lot of people around... not sure why but it just made me uncomfortable |

Marcerella02, How is your baby? What did the vet say? |
well mother knows best. and yes she has kennel cough... he gave her antibiotics which she takes 3 times i day... they start with a C... really long name! he said we caught it early.. THANK GOD! she was fine all day today and just started around 9 with the coughing... i'm hoping we dont have another long night.. i asked if he had anything to supress the coughing but he said he'd rather not give her anything just keep her on her meds... i almost let it run its course and forego the vet.. but i'm really glad i didn't.. my poor babe tho.. this will be the 4th week straight on some sort of medication! he suggested in March when she goes for her boosters (i'm having them split up to avoid the horrible reactions she has) to get the kennel cough vaccine... after this bout of it i definitly will ( i was hesitant before) thanks so much for all the help! |
oh and he only mentioned one vaccine! |
Bobbi and I are going to be praying for Layla. I know she just got over her diarrhea bouts and now this :( Hugs!! |

Hi. I was under the impression that antibiotics do not help with kennel cough only if it persists for more than 10 days with the possibility of a secondary infection due to suppressed immune system. Although there is a cough suppressant that will make your pup more comfortable. Hope your little one feels better soon. |

its good you went to the vet. Kennel Cough in puppies can turn into pneumonia if not taken care of right away. their bodies are too small to handle the infection without medication. good luck, and hopefully it clears up soon. |
How's your little one doing today? Hope she gets better soon! :) |
How is Layla today? If her tummy is okay, you might want to try some yogurt with active cultures to keep her as healthy as possible with all the antibiotics. |
oh thanks everyone :) i asked my vet why she was getting anitbiotics because i thought it was a virus.. he said that it was a bacteria.. but he may have been suggesting that it will turn into a bacteria... he is a GREAT vet.. but a slight "accent barrier" he has an accent and i hate always saying "pardon" so i just get the importnat info! layla is doing MUCH better today!! usually by this time of night (10 pm) she is coughing up a storm.. and so far so good! last night was very rough.. we were up all night.. she would get into coughing fits and i thought she was going to choke.. but she was ok... i set a humidifier up.. so i think that helped ;) her tummy is BACK TO NORMAL :) we are now on VERY high quality food so we won't have that problem again (i hope) i'm going away this weekend (layla is coming) so when i get back i'm going to try the yogurt.. thanks for the suggestion jodi! what type do you buy? thanks so much everyone! i thought my girl would NEVER get kennel cough but alas... it's possible.. so glad we are on the mend! |

I use Dannon Activia Vanilla with my girls. It has active cultures in it, no artificial sweetners. They get yogurt for breakfast everyday. The two of them split 1/2 a container, so they each get about an once - not much, but they love it!!! I tried to use plain at first, but Sissy would have nothing to do with it. I know some use the fruit on the bottom yogurt as well. As long as there is no nutrasweet or any other artificial sweetener, and you're not using chocolate or coffee flavor, I think you're okay. I also buy the full fat kind, not low-fat. |

Kennel Cough tip When our Biscuit had keenel cough, it took him so long to get over it, even with the antibiotics, I almost thought he never would get better. But, the one thing that helped him at night, was a humidifier with vicks in it. It seemed to help ease his little throat so he wouldn't cough as much. Hang in there-it will get better! Biscuit and Willow send kissies! |

And anytime I take antibiotics or give my furbabies antibiotics, I eat and feed them the Dannon Activia Vanilla........my Primary Dr. recommeneded it!:) |

But you know, she doesn't have kennel cough anymore, and her energy level is normal, crazy lil girl actually.. and no problems eating or anything, but she still coughs a lil. She still sounds a lil congested. Is there anything that will help her cough go away. I called the vet and told them i didnt want to bring her in unless its serious. And they said it should go away on its own as long as her energy level hasn't gone down at all, which it hasn't. Is there anything that will help her cough go away. Im glad layla is doing better. Good job on catching it early! |
so layla got sick tonight... and the same thing happened two nights ago.. just out of no where threw up ... might it be the anitboitics?? i'm worried that she isn't always getting them on a full stomach... today she didn't eat much because we are away and she finds it a bit stressful.. but she threw up a full stomach worth.. it's almost like she isnt' digesting the food.. my poor girl.. always somethign wrogn. i'll be SO happy when this medication is done! |
