HELP! Pneumonia Hello I am new to this board, I recently just got a baby Yorkie named Kiwi, shes just 2 months old. I had her for a little more than a week and she just started to cough. I didnt think much of it but it got worse the next day so I immediately bought her to the vet. He just gave me the antibiotic Clavamox and injected one dose in her that day. As soon as she got home, she vomited. I was told to give her a dose of Clavamox orally and I did that night but to no avail, she didn't sleep. She was basically lifeless so I took her back to the vet the next day and they gave her an X-ray that showed her chest covered with mucus and air she sucked in. They kept her overnight for 2 nights, kept her on fluids, and injected her with antibiotics. I picked her up 2 days ago from the hospital and was told she had gotten better and ate, and kept the food down. She is a lot more active than she was when she first got sick but i found she was coughing again. I took her to the hospital for an emergency checkup and they took another X-Ray and it showed she had signs of pneumonia. She had gotten worse. I was told to buy a humidifier which I did tonight but it blows out cold mist. Does anyone know if this is a good idea exposing the sick dog to cold air? sounds strange to me but I will do anything to save her at this point. Any suggestions on helping her would be greatly appreciated, thanks :( |
I've seen kids in cold steem plastic tents in the hospital, so I suppose it's ok, although I don't understand how this puppy got in this condition in the first place. It isn't good for a puppy to have all that medication either. I do hope it pulls through, but should have stayed with it's mom at least a month longer. I will say a prayer for your baby. |
Hector is sick too. Hi there. My little guy Hector is 3 months. We have had him for three weeks and he has been sick since we got him. I have been taking him to the vet every week. They were basically thinking he had an Upper Respitory Infection and put him on Amonxidrops for 2 weeks, it did not clear up fully and they switched him to clavinox. He has been on that since Friday. I have noticed a huge change. He is not coughing anymore, but has so much flem and gunck in his chest I can hear it as he breathes. I am not sure if this is a good sign that he is getting better and it is breaking up or if it is a sign it is getting worse. I am worried it is turning into Pneumonia. I am so sorry to hear about your little baby. It is so hard when they are so little and so sick. I am going to try the humidifyer tonight. I have used that with my children and it has worked well. But I have always used steam / warm air humidifyers. Hope this helps at all. |
Yes, a cool mish humidifier for Pneumonia is the thing to do. I have had pneumonia several times as a child, I was even in a cool mist tent in the hospital. It helps with breathing. I still have one at night going when I sleep. A vaporizer which is a warm mist doesn't work the same way. Listen to your Vet, he's right. Hope your baby is feeling better soon. |
I definitely can relate to you with all of this. When we got Princess she was just as sick/if not sicker. We took all the xrays and she had the air and mucus in her lungs. She was put on Clavimox also, but it did not work either. Tell your vet that it is not working and he needs to switch medications. Princess ended up being in the emergency hospital-in an oxygen tank 2 hrs away for 2 WEEKS!! It was awful and expensive. They had to "tap" into her chest and pull air out of her lungs. I will keep you in my prayers-I know how you feel, just think positive and keep us posted:( |
Bless your heart I know you must be feeling so stressed but you really do need to prod the vet to do something. Your baby needs to get better quick. Best of luck to you and your baby. Please keep us informed.:) |
BPrincess how long was your puppy on medication before they finally decided to tap into her chest? and how severe was the cough? Kiwi sounds like she has something stuck in her throat and she gets it all up and then swallows it. And how was the dog acting? was she active and eating or lifeless? sorry for all these questions your post really scares me now it seems like we have the same illnesses. |
i am sooo sorry and will be praying that ur baby gets better soon!!! |
Thanks for the encouraging words Thanks so much for the info on your precious Princess. Hector is due to the vet today aand I think I will tell them to switch meds. I am praying he has not gotten worse and it is moving into pnemonia. I hve been really stressed about this. He is active, eats aand is playful but you can hear all this flem, mucus and congestion in his chest. It really scares me. Thanks again, and prayers for all our sick little babies! |
this is terrieble. i am so sorry. i hope everything works out. |
oh no....for both little puppies - IF I thought one of my girls had pnemonia I'd want them getting 24/7 vet care - have you talked to the vets about this ??? There are things a hospital can do that we can't :( ALL the best and I hope the sick puppies in this thread both get better soon !! |
Thanks so much for all the kind words. I will let you all know what the vet says about Hector today. I appreciate the support and of course Yorkie Talk! |

Hector, your little Hector's condition sounds exactly like Kiwi's. She is playful and eats but she also coughs a ton and I hear the congestion everytime she breathes. What medication are you on? Kiwi went from Clavamox to Ceta-Drops. Now I have to give her 1ML of the Ceta-Drops, 1/4 of a tablet of Chloramphenicol and 1/4 of a Pepcid AC TWICE a day and she is on baby food for the time being. I feel its too much for such a young puppy to be on multiple medications. Hope little Hector will be OK, good luck at the vet. |
Hey there. So I took Hector to the Vet yesterday afternoon and she says it has not moved into pneumonia. Thank God!! I was terrified of that. He is still on clavamox for a few more days, sleeps in the bathroom at night with a humidifyer and gave me the Robitussin info for his cough. He seems to be doing better, his lungs are clear he just has all that flem which I think the vet is hoping will clear up soon. I am so sorry to hear about your little Kiwi. It is so hard when they are little. I do think the humidifyer helps. I put Hector in the bathroom with it. It is a small closed space and it helps him to breathe and clear his lungs. I am in Colorado though where we have no humidity and have to make our own. Please let me know how Kiwi is doing. I would just watch like a hawk. Eating good and activity level are great signs. The vet told me there is a bacterial component which the clavamox is for, but there is also a viral component which their immune systems have to fight on there own. Good luck and all my best! |
