Oh, help help help! Before we end up having to go to the er can anyone give me any suggestions as to how to get my new mama to eat? The babies are 3 days old and mama has eaten less and less. |
I have tried tempting her with every thing seh would have gobbled up before. Bologna, hotdogs hamburger canned dog food |
No, you should take her in and make sure she isn't running a fever and so on. Pyometriosis isn't any fun and can take a bitch down in just hours. (there are symptoms, but it varies so greatly that it isn't worth chancing these *signs*) |
She definitely needs to see the vet, but if you're in a pinch, try some rice cooked with chicken broth (or use boullion cube melted in water). Or, some boiled chicken. Make sure she gets LOTS of water too as those pups are really taking the fluids out of her. Hope all turns out well. |
Yes, Take her to the vet. I gave Molly goat's milk she loved it when nothing else would work. Good Luck to you! |
You should take her to the vet . |
I hope your Mama is better today! Keep us posted, please? |
How are mama and the pups doing today? |
i hope everything is ok...pls let us know |
I too had to give mine goats milk because she wasnt eating and nutrical 2 times a day. You can get also try rebound, its good. |
If it is an infection, she can be dead quicker than you think. She really needs a Vet to check her out. |
We did take her to the vet. We eked her along until this morning, no vets want to work over the holiday. Our vet thinks she has a bit of pancreatitis. He doesn't feel it's too serious at this point because she's not vomiting. He gave her a shot of antibiotics and sent some home with us. He gave her an injection of glucose and some special dog food to mix with a kind of doggie pedialyte and said to force feed her. He said if she gets worse she will have to be hospitalized so you know I'm working hard on her. The babies are doing great. I am trying to supplement them on puppy formula so they aren't such a drain on mama, but they sure don't like it. LOL Was the goat's milk fresh or canned? Sylvia |
One of the main symptoms of Pancreatitis is vomiting, so if she isn't, I kind of doubt that she has that. I sure hope that she'll be okay, but you may want to get a second opinion. If she has a uterine infection it can kill her rather quickly and I'd hate to see that happen to you guys:( It\'s good that he gave her a shot of antibiotics, but it may not be enough, and antibiotics do not "cure" pancreatitis anyway:confused: If it were my dog, I\'d be seeking out a new vet. JMHO. I know you must be exhausted, hopefully you\'ll be able to get some rest here and there. Take good care of YOU too! |
You should never feed bologna..very high in sodium and preservatives like many human foods that can cause pancreatitus. |
It is a very stressful situation. However, trying to get her to eat a huge variance of human food is not good for her at all. She will become sick and you won\'t know if it is from the mixture of food she isn\'t used to or if it is the original cause for not eating to begin with. Being that she has just had pups I\'d definetly take her to another vet. She needs to be checked over thoroughly. Are you sure she passed all placentas? A retained one can cause problems for sure. Do you think the vet checked her over thoroughly...looking and pressing in all the right areas? Is she urinating frequently? Is she drinking water? Did he check her temp? I pray all is well with her and that she has a full recovery. Please post another update soon so we will know how she is feeling and what her current symptoms are. |
