mucus poop?

I noticed Siu Pao had watery poop yesterday morning and hence I start feeding him boiled chicken and rice for dinner yesterday night and this morning and also for today's dinner. He just pooped and it looks like mucus poop, no blood in it but his stool volume is really little and mucus like. The stool smells like the chicken that I fed him. Should i be worried? Will it clear off? Should I not feed him for 12-24 hours?

Help!

Potter 11-27-2006 08:57 PM

can anyone give me some info and what should i do next?

Hi, I can you get your baby to the vet asap. I'm not sure exactly what the problem would be, but I hope things get better real soon. :)

Lacy's Mom 11-28-2006 12:06 AM

My best guess would be giardia, mucous in the poop is a symptom, diarrhea, anorexia another. Here's a link. It's harder to diagnose than the other parasites and doesn't show up in a normal fecal float, but there is a stain test that is accurate, but some vets have to send this out to a special lab. The treatment prescribed is metronidazole (flagyl). This probably needs to be ruled out so it doesn't progress to bloody diarrhea. Get a fresh stool sample into a vet, many will test without an appointment for about $10.00. I would continue to feed the boiled skinless chicken and cooked white rice.

Just noticed you posted yesterday. Sorry I just saw it.

Potter 11-28-2006 07:08 AM

I am waiting for Siu Pao to poo. He is not pooing yet and it is later than usual. Could it also be Coccidia? It really is worrying me :( and I can't wait for him to poo again so I can take a sample.

Potter 11-28-2006 07:29 AM

I am still waiting for Siu Pao to poop. Usually he has already poop like an hour before this but he isn't and hasn't. Its just so weird. I really hope he will be okay.

Potter 11-28-2006 10:00 AM

Siu Pao hasn't poop today and its noon here. I am still waiting...its weird that he went from watery poop to no poop at all?

Lacy's Mom 11-28-2006 11:40 AM

Try feeding him and taking him for a brisk walk that usually gets things moving. You could also try the match trick.

Here's the match trick:
You insert the non-sulfur end of a soft match from a book not a stick. Some people use it to train their puppy so they don't have to wait -never tried it myself.

Ok, so what is this trick, you ask? First, get yourself a book of matches. They need to be the soft kind that you rip out of a book. Second, rip off a match. Third, this is where it gets weird; insert the NON-sulfur side, or the torn side, into your dog's rear end. DO NOT LIGHT THE MATCH! I think that goes without saying, but believe me, I have fielded that question before. Insert the match about halfway into the backside of your dog and let the rest hang out. Any further and it could go all the way inside and that would be bad news. Now wait. The match is going to be an irritating feeling for your dog. Your dog is going to want to get rid of that feeling. To get rid of it your dog will squat to try and push it out. In the process of pushing out the match your dog will make a bowel movement and voila! Mission accomplished.

The only reason for using a match is because it is the right size and has a soft texture. I have read this saying to wet the sulfur end and insert - NO this has nothing to do with the sulfur whatsoever.

Oscar's Mummy 11-28-2006 11:56 AM

One watery poop could have been absolutely NOTHING - I would have just left that alone. One watery bowel movement is not diarrhea. As far as I can tell, there were no signs of illness - he wasn't lethargic or hadn't stopped eating or drinking. Had you just left it, it's very possible that his stool would have returned to normal on its own. Dogs won't have perfectly formed little tootsie rolls 100% of the time - and if one day they don't, please don't assume that they are sick - you'll drive yourself nuts with worry! BOTH of my dogs have had small amounts of mucous in their poop at one time or another, watery poop, jelly like poop and other types of varying degrees of grossness - I leave it alone and it almost always returns to normal by their next poop. I've NEVER had to take them to the vet because of it and I assure you they are both perfectly healthy dogs. Now if it's diarrhea, that's different, and it shouldn't be left for too long untreated (depending on the size of your dog).

In your case, immediately switching to boiled chicken and rice may have upset his tummy more and resulted in the mucousy poop. The fact that he hasn't had a BM yet today could just be his little system being slightly out of whack now. I wouldn't rush off to the vet just yet - if it were me, I would get him back onto his regular food that he eats everyday and make sure he's drinking plenty of water. If he should become listless or start refusing to eat/drink and the runny stools continue or you notice blood in his stool, then I would recommend a visit to the vet. Routine is key with these guys!

Good luck with your little one - I hope it really is nothing!

Lacy's Mom 11-28-2006 12:41 PM

Hopefully, nothing is wrong, but here's an article on Poo Patrol which states mucous in the stools is something that you may need to be concerned about and for $10.00 why not have it checked out? But I do agree with Oscar's Mom that I wouldn't be too stressed out about it either.

Taken from:
http://cyberpet.com/cyberdog/articles/health/poop.htm

Poop patrol helps you to monitor the health condition of your precious pet. As horrid as it might seem to analyze those feces, sudden changes in elimination habits could signal something physically wrong with your pet. In many cases, you can spot abnormalities quickly and take action to prevent more escalated veterinary problems or death. Having a good rapport with your veterinarian is important, so are regular check ups for your pet.

Litterbox avoidance, strange marking behavior, more frequent or less frequent toileting can be some of the signs you could see if something is wrong. There are many little things you could look for. By paying attention consistently, you will know what is normal and what is not. Telling the difference in abnormal consistency from too rich a diet and illness could be useful.

Blood or mucous in the stool could be something to follow up on by visiting the vet. Always check with your veterinary medical doctor if you suspect anything wrong. Seeing such things as white flecks in the stool may suggest tapeworms, have a fecal exam to rule out other worms too. If you have any sort of flea infestation they contribute to the problem, so get that under control too.

Remember, as a good pet owner your poop patrol duties include:
-keeping toileting areas clean for the health and welfare of your animals, family, and the other critters nearby
-cleaning up the public areas your pet soils
-being responsible enough to make sure your pet does not create a nuisance in the neighborhood by inappropriately eliminating or marking your neighbors property, and cleaning up after your critter if it does.
-monitoring the condition of your animal through paying attention while on poop patrol (remembering that any drastic changes in toileting habits may be a sign of something wrong)

Potter 11-28-2006 07:07 PM

Thank you for all the advices. Siu Pao has finally poop at 10pm today. I put him on his normal diet (dog food) for dinner today. I see white flecks in his poo which I do not see when he poop watery poo. I have taken some samples in a bag and will definitely bring it to his vet for a worm test. Hopefully everything will be okay.

Lacy's Mom 11-28-2006 07:15 PM

If they look like flat dried grains of rice, probably tapeworm segments. Do you have a problem with fleas? Definitely take a fecal sample in.

Potter 11-28-2006 07:25 PM

They are really really small that I can't make out their shape but I can see the white flecks. I have kept some stool but is it okay to keep them and send them in tomorrow morning? Do they need to be "fresh"? I will definitely send it in to the vet tomorrow. No we do not have a problem with fleas as he is on the Advantage Multi 10 that the vet prescribed and it covers fleas prevention and I do not see any fleas on him.I am very very worried though. Will he be okay if he get treated tomorrow or the day after tomorrow when the test results are back?

Lacy's Mom 11-28-2006 07:33 PM

Tapeworm segments aren't small so probably not. A stool sample should be as fresh as possible. Definitely refrigerate, but call the vet before wasting a trip and bringing it in, I think he will probably want one from the same day, refrigerated until you bring it in. I would keep that one too and just bring both in case the next doesn't show the white flecks. Don't know what the flecks could be, maybe just some undigested food matter, but maybe eggs of a parasite. If the stools are back to a normal consistency and color (the shape "being skinny" wouldn't bother me) then maybe you are wasting your money on a vet bill, if her appetite and energy level are good, but I probably would pay the $10.00 since you really should have a stool sample checked at least once a year, probably twice.

BacisMom 11-28-2006 07:35 PM

i had the same problem with my lil one. He had diarreah for like 4 days. Took him to the vet, they thought a million and one things because of course they want to rule out as much as possible. They put him on prescription diet... he had to take two different kinds of pills, and tested for heartworm and did a fecal exam.

after all of this everything came back negative and after the pills and presciption diet food were gone he was to go back on regular food.

diarreah came back. I was feeding him royal canine puppy food. Decided to change the food because of people on here saying how rich of a food that was. Switched to nutro for sensitive tummy's.
Everything went back to normal, the little one must have developed an allergy to the corn or something in the royal canine food.

maybe thats your answer?

Potter 11-28-2006 07:42 PM

The last time he had a fecal test is 2 months ago when I just got him. Everything came back good and it was $40 for the test. Maybe the change of diet from his usual dry dog food to chicken and rice made him poop the white stuff? Could the small flecks be undigested white rice? Do worms move in the poop? They don't move and they are really small. I will wait for another poop tomorrow to do a comparison but I am calling my vet to get the stool checked. Its better to be safe than sorry but I hope they don't charge me another $40.

Lacy's Mom 11-28-2006 08:02 PM

$40 are you kidding, did that include an office visit?? It is usually somewhere between $8 and $12 for the test. This will be the first time I have heard of anything close to that high. You might want to check around with some other vets. My vet just let's me drop off a sample, but I am in there pretty often since I breed. Rounds worms would be wiggling, but it could be eggs which wouldn't move. If you're talking $40 I might take a wait and see attitude and closely examine future poos before taking it in, if the diarrhea has stopped and everything else is okay.

Potter 11-28-2006 08:15 PM

Yup. I checked my receipt. Can$36.50 to be exact. What a rip off. I will check with other vets in my area. Its pretty hard to get a vet that do not rip you off these days especially in my area. I'll definitely check his stool again when he poops tomorrow morning. I'll call the vets tomorrow and ask. Crossing my fingers everything will be fine. He is eating and playing as usual. Will keep a close eye on him.

cchu 11-28-2006 08:17 PM

ok...let me tell you something about mucus poop...

My Zoe has stomach problem EVERY month!! Everytime he has diarrhea, there's mucus in it. I was really freaked out the first few times this happened and I rushed him to the vet even emrgency vet (which costs $100.00 for the examination alone). All I was told to do was change his diet to chicken and rice which you are doing. They also took a stool sample EVERYTIME!! Every test come out negative.

About 2 months ago, his diarrhea came back, it turns out he had coccidia which is very common. He took some meds and his stool was normal after that. 2 days ago, his diarrhea came back along with vomiting. That same night, he ate onions.:( I induced vomiting with peroxide and he didn't poop for 2 days. He is now fine and dandy.:)

Chicken and rice always works. I also give him forti flora (cultures) from time to time. its good bacteria.

Good luck and PM me with any questions.

Potter 11-28-2006 08:28 PM

Okay latest update.he poop again at 11.25pm.This time, I see a dead worm in it and my best guess is those tiny flecks are eggs. It is about 1-2 inch long, not flat; rather more like a longish? What type of worm are they? Is it best that I go to the vet and have him de-wormed tomorrow rather than wait for the fecal results? There are a lot of eggs!

Again, I am so worried of him. Will he be okay if he gets treatment tomorrow? How come the sudden burst of worms? I have just disinfected my whole house and deep clean my carpet on Sunday.

Poor baby. The vet will probably have a quick fix for this, but I really don't know what to tell you, but your baby does need to see the vet.

Please keep us posted, and good luck.

Kate

I hope he gets better soon. I'm also from Canada, and my vet charges $36 plus GST for a stool sample. I think the States is different when it comes to vet fees.

Lacy's Mom 11-28-2006 09:58 PM

It definitely sounds like round worms. Sometimes it take more than one treatment spaced apart. Your vet will probably just look at it and prescribe fenbendazole (panacur) or pyrantal pamoate (Nemex II) and then have you come back for a stool recheck.

There are over the counter products available, I, personally, use Nemex II, but remember to be very careful in reading the labels and determining the correct dosage, you need to have an exact weight and enough math skills so you don't overdose the dog. I handle my own worming, but it is possible for some dogs to have a reaction to the wormer (never have had it happen though). If you do decide to treat on your own, I would still take in a sample 2 weeks after the treatment ends to make sure it is now negative.

Just a note, after treatment, you will probably see piles of worms come out. Clean up all stools in the yard and dispose of new ones promptly so the dog doesn't keep getting reinfested.

Potter 11-28-2006 10:07 PM

Is it safe for me to give him some Pepto for now?

Lacy's Mom 11-28-2006 11:06 PM

I probably wouldn't. It could have a reaction with the wormer. I would just feed boiled chicken and rice and get him wormed as soon as possible. He'll be better in no time at all.

Potter 11-29-2006 04:19 AM

I can't sleep.I'm basically lounging around in YT for time to pass and waiting for the vet to open. I don't understand how I didn't know my baby had worms until now.How on earth did he get roundworms? I clean and disinfect the house every other day and I am really careful when I bring him out.Feeling like I am such a bad Mommy :thumbdown

cchu 11-29-2006 06:48 AM

You are not a bad mommy!! YOu are worried sick about your little baby and there's not much you can do except bring him to the vet which you are.

TO my knowledge, they can get worms by eating their own or other animal's feces.

LEt meknow what the vet says.

Potter 11-29-2006 08:34 AM

Okay. We are going to the vets in 10 minutes. This is the earliest appointment I can get. Will post an update here when I get home.

Potter 11-29-2006 10:19 AM

I just got back from the vet. The vet did not even see us, just the vet tech. They prescribed him Drontal Plus. I gave him with cheese and he swallowed the whole one and a half pill. They gave me another one and a half to take again after 3 weeks. They also ask me to put him back on dry dog food mix with boiled chicken and rice. Hopefully, from here I am going to see him poop lots of worms and get better from there. I feel like I am the one getting sick now from no sleep.
