The last time he had a fecal test is 2 months ago when I just got him. Everything came back good and it was $40 for the test. Maybe the change of diet from his usual dry dog food to chicken and rice made him poop the white stuff? Could the small flecks be undigested white rice? Do worms move in the poop? They don't move and they are really small. I will wait for another poop tomorrow to do a comparison but I am calling my vet to get the stool checked. Its better to be safe than sorry but I hope they don't charge me another $40. |

$40 are you kidding, did that include an office visit?? It is usually somewhere between $8 and $12 for the test. This will be the first time I have heard of anything close to that high. You might want to check around with some other vets. My vet just let's me drop off a sample, but I am in there pretty often since I breed. Rounds worms would be wiggling, but it could be eggs which wouldn't move. If you're talking $40 I might take a wait and see attitude and closely examine future poos before taking it in, if the diarrhea has stopped and everything else is okay. |

Yup. I checked my receipt. Can$36.50 to be exact. What a rip off. I will check with other vets in my area. Its pretty hard to get a vet that do not rip you off these days especially in my area. I'll definitely check his stool again when he poops tomorrow morning. I'll call the vets tomorrow and ask. Crossing my fingers everything will be fine. He is eating and playing as usual. Will keep a close eye on him. |

ok...let me tell you something about mucus poop... My Zoe has stomach problem EVERY month!! Everytime he has diarrhea, there's mucus in it. I was really freaked out the first few times this happened and I rushed him to the vet even emrgency vet (which costs $100.00 for the examination alone). All I was told to do was change his diet to chicken and rice which you are doing. They also took a stool sample EVERYTIME!! Every test come out negative. About 2 months ago, his diarrhea came back, it turns out he had coccidia which is very common. He took some meds and his stool was normal after that. 2 days ago, his diarrhea came back along with vomiting. That same night, he ate onions.:( I induced vomiting with peroxide and he didn't poop for 2 days. He is now fine and dandy.:) Chicken and rice always works. I also give him forti flora (cultures) from time to time. its good bacteria. Good luck and PM me with any questions. |

Okay latest update.he poop again at 11.25pm.This time, I see a dead worm in it and my best guess is those tiny flecks are eggs. It is about 1-2 inch long, not flat; rather more like a longish? What type of worm are they? Is it best that I go to the vet and have him de-wormed tomorrow rather than wait for the fecal results? There are a lot of eggs! Again, I am so worried of him. Will he be okay if he gets treatment tomorrow? How come the sudden burst of worms? I have just disinfected my whole house and deep clean my carpet on Sunday. |

I hope he gets better soon. I'm also from Canada, and my vet charges $36 plus GST for a stool sample. I think the States is different when it comes to vet fees. |

It definitely sounds like round worms. Sometimes it take more than one treatment spaced apart. Your vet will probably just look at it and prescribe fenbendazole (panacur) or pyrantal pamoate (Nemex II) and then have you come back for a stool recheck. There are over the counter products available, I, personally, use Nemex II, but remember to be very careful in reading the labels and determining the correct dosage, you need to have an exact weight and enough math skills so you don't overdose the dog. I handle my own worming, but it is possible for some dogs to have a reaction to the wormer (never have had it happen though). If you do decide to treat on your own, I would still take in a sample 2 weeks after the treatment ends to make sure it is now negative. Just a note, after treatment, you will probably see piles of worms come out. Clean up all stools in the yard and dispose of new ones promptly so the dog doesn't keep getting reinfested. |

Is it safe for me to give him some Pepto for now? |
|
I probably wouldn't. It could have a reaction with the wormer. I would just feed boiled chicken and rice and get him wormed as soon as possible. He'll be better in no time at all. |

I can't sleep.I'm basically lounging around in YT for time to pass and waiting for the vet to open. I don't understand how I didn't know my baby had worms until now.How on earth did he get roundworms? I clean and disinfect the house every other day and I am really careful when I bring him out.Feeling like I am such a bad Mommy :thumbdown |

You are not a bad mommy!! YOu are worried sick about your little baby and there's not much you can do except bring him to the vet which you are. TO my knowledge, they can get worms by eating their own or other animal's feces. LEt meknow what the vet says. |

Okay. We are going to the vets in 10 minutes. This is the earliest appointment I can get. Will post an update here when I get home. |

I just got back from the vet. The vet did not even see us, just the vet tech. They prescribed him Drontal Plus. I gave him with cheese and he swallowed the whole one and a half pill. They gave me another one and a half to take again after 3 weeks. They also ask me to put him back on dry dog food mix with boiled chicken and rice. Hopefully, from here I am going to see him poop lots of worms and get better from there. I feel like I am the one getting sick now from no sleep. |
