bad reaction to shots-please help romeo went to the vet yesterday @ 3pm and had 4 shots. corona lepto giardia lyme he was fine last nite. now he is very tired, holding up his rear left leg, not eating or drinking and unable to walk. please help. the vet is closed today and i don't know how to help him. can i give him baby asprin or something else to make him comfortable until i get him back to the vet tomorrow??? |
All of these vaccines are on the non-core vaccine list from the American Veterinary Medical Association. I know you have been around long enough to know the high reaction to Lepto. What was your reasoning in getting these vaccines in the first place? I'm not trying to scold you, just wanting to know. I have always been told to give Benadryl 1mg/per pound for vaccine reactions. |
Does your vet have an emergency number you can call? I would atleast call somewhere and see if these symptoms are normal. Good luck, hope all is OK. |
I am not familiar with these type of vaccines to be administered. Is this part of their annual shots? I hope your baby is feeling better soon and someone here can help you out. Sending warm huggles :aimeeyork |
Try giving a half dose of children's liquid benedryl - my vet recommended this to me when Ferdinand had a bad reaction. |
i didn't know he didn't need them. :( he's my first dog and i was unaware. the vet said he needed to have them because i walk him everywhere and bring him to dog parks. i feel horrible. :( he is suffering and it's my fault. can i give him liquid benedryl? i think he's in pain. will it help with pain? |
Please call and alternative vet now! |
When Peanut gets his shots I would let him get more than one at a time even though he has had no reactions. I hope your little guy feels better. |
They have aspririn for dogs at Petco and Petsmart if you're concerned with pain. And yes, the liquid (but make sure it's Children's) is the best to give them (from what I've been told) |
Typo (I wouldn't let him) |
The Leptospirosis vaccine is the most common culprit of causing adverse reactions. Plus, it's very ineffective. The vaccine only protects against a couple of the many strains of the bacteria. And although it is around, it's relatively rare. Many of the more informed vets have stopped giving Lepto shots for these reasons. There is now a vaccine available for Lyme disease. However, a good number of vets refuse to use it. The vaccine causes many side effects. Vets state that it's actually easier treating the disease itself. Also, there's no reason to have your pet vaccinated for Lyme unless you live in a tick infested area. But dogs who live in these areas often have a natural immunity, which is stronger, so giving the vaccine is pointless. Corona produces symptoms somewhat like mild Parvo, however most dogs recover quickly, with little treatment. The vaccine has never been proven effective. Very few Veterinary Colleges (which lead the way in medical research) use the vaccine. |

i just called the university of pennslyvania vet hospital in philadelphia. i spoke to someone at the 24hr emergency line. she said these vaccinations are common for where we live. she said if he doesn't eat/drink in the next few hours bring him to his regular vet tomorrow when they open. she also said no benedryl or any other kind of otc medicine. it will make him more ill and harder to diagnose. she ended the conversation by saying rush him over to them only if he becomes unresponsive. these symptoms are common with vaccinations. |
maybe someone will learn from my mistake in over vaccinating Quote:

Is there an animal hospital or another vet you can call? |

romeo update i checked with a human doctor and a pharmacist and they both agree with the advice from the university of penn. he just ate a little chicken and had a few licks of water. i'm just going to hang on the couch with him tonight and keep a close eye on him. |
Aww poor little guy. Im in South Jersey too and I never give my dogs lepto, its not a big problem around here. I heard Corona can make them sick too. I cant beleive your vet gave all those shots in one day. My vet always seperates them. Im not sure where in SJ you are but if you need help finding a new vet I could suggest a few good ones in the area. I use Chews Landing Vet Hospital in Laurel Springs on Chews landing Road. They are really good with all my dogs. I think you made a good choice calling Penn, there is also another emergency clinic in Mount Laurel NJ. I have taken my dogs there a few times and seem really good |
When Venus got shots about 3 weeks ago, they made her pretty sick that first night. I went back to giving her neutra-cal. When I'd take her out, she did't want to walk at all. The next day, she was her old self. When I picked her up, she'd yelp also. I knew it was on the same side she got the shots that were giving her so much pain. I dread Friday, when I take her back again. But I do have neutra-cal here, just in case. |
Just wondering how Romeo is doing today? |
How's the little guy doing? I hope he's feeling better! |
