I just saw this thread and I'm so relieved to see that Romeo is doing better! It certainly is not your fault! Your vet should have known not to do that! Hugs to you! |
So happy to hear he is better!!!! My ver ONLY gives the shots with Lepto and I just found this out. Sooo, I'm learning real quick on how to do them myself. WITH NO LEPTO! |

I'm not sure why the OP got her puppy these shots, but I got Rocky all his vaccines, needed or not, becuase I don't want to take any chances of him catching any pathogens in the future and have a worse outcome. Maybe that was why? I'm glad Romeo's doing better! |
Oh I am so glad he's feeling better. And by all means don't even for one second think this was your fault. You did what your vet recommended and I would have probably done the same thing. |
Oh my goodness Bernadette! Poor little Romeo, he must have felt so sore. :( You're such a good mom so don't get the guilts! My dogs get their vaccines separately (except for lepto which they don't get) and still have that day or two where they won't eat and just lay around. ChaCha had a horrible reaction to her last rabies and developed an abscess at the injection site. Now I'm considering not giving her rabies again. |
another romeo update i just got home from work. (i work nites) he was with my fiance' all nite. he looks great. he is jumping around and back to normal. i feel better also. :) i'm really happy he's better. |
I just saw this thread (haven't been on much lately)!! I'm so sorry that Romeo went through this. Don't beat yourself up about this. We all have and will make mistakes. It is by these mistakes that we learn and by sharing that we educate others so they don't need to go through this experience. I'm so glad that he is back to his normal self. Sissy will be due to her annual shots within the next couple months. I'm telling my vet no lepto and no bordatella (she got kennel cough from the first intranasal dose). I'm also considering no rabies because I've heard the mandatory dosage is much too much for a 4 lb. dog. My vet has always been very cautious and when Sissy was a pup would only give one shot at a time with nothing blended. So, I trust her judgement - but will still put my two cents in when I know something she might not. All of the stuff I know I learned on YT - so it is posts like this that keep folks educated/informed!!!! |
Do you know instead of doing the shots at the vets office you have have them run titers on them and give only shots that are needed. They can also run titers on the rabies. Its a little more expensive but instead of taking the chance they are going to have a reaction you can find out what shots your dog really needs. Kennels are now accepting titers on dogs |
run titers? I've never heard of that. Can someone explain what it is? |
Quote:
A titer is a test that measure the presence and amount of antibodies in blood. These antibodies may be against a particular type of tissue, cell, bacteria, virus, or other external substance. They take blood and check the level of the antibodies from the vaccination. If the antibodies are very low or not there then you give the vaccination again, you dont have to give the shot again if the antibody levels are ok |
As some of you know I too had this problem with my yorkie pup who is also named Romeo. This occured on his first round of shots. I had no idea what to do. He swelled up everywhere and he started choking. He was allergic to lepto. I live in rural Oklahoma and they say it is a necessity to have it around here. So, this time, the vet gave him like 3 different shot to stop the reaction before it even started and we waited around the office for a few hours. He did absolutely perfect. No swelling, no choking, no nothing. Maybe something to consider next time. But it was in no way your fault. Most of the time, we only know what our vets tell us!! Glad he is doing ok. |
I took Louie in on last Monday to get his yearly shots. He is almost 2 yrs old. He recieved 3 shots and by that night I noticed he wasnt acting himself. He had his back all scrunched and his tail pointed down, as if he was in pain. I was instantly concerned. We watched him over night and he was worse by morning. He was kinda walking funny. I had to go to work but my husband was gonna check on him at lunch time. He called me at work and told me to call the vet. He wasnt wanting to move at all. We drove him back to the vets and he evaluated him and determined that he was having a bad reaction to the shots. He gave him a shot of some kind of steriod and another shot that would take away the side effect of nasea from the steriod. He said within 5 minutes he should feel better. ( boy did he scream when they gave him those last 2 shots) My vet felt horrible for giving him so many shots at once, so he didn't charge me for anything. We got home that night and he was allready acting better. His tail went from the down positition to be straight up. He was playing about with Elle. And was eatting and drinking once again. But one thing I have learned from all of this, is never under estimate the power of routine shots. |

I sure learned a lot..... Wow.....I learned a lot about the side effects of giving shots with this thread.........I know I sell to human docs, but I forget how little these yorkies are.......and you know.... Sometimes you just trust that the person administering the drugs know what they are doing.......apparently, that is not the case.... So, could someone.....reinterate just which ones not to give....???? |
