Maddie is hurting! I am just sick! I think I hurt Maddie. When I was brushing her a while ago, I noticed pine needles stuck in her beard. I got them out okay and then noticed her one foot was full of sap and pine needles which must have happened when she was squirrel hunting this morn. I cut some of it out and then used dawn dish soap just on that area. I then combed through it and she let out an awful yelp. I'm wondering if I put her foot out of joint or something because she held it up and then she just went wild running through the house crying like I've never heard her cry before. I picked her up and she just screamed and screamed. She is calmed down now, but she won't stop licking that foot. At first I couldn't touch it or she screamed in pain, but now when I do, she doesn't cry, but she still won't walk on it. She is on her pillow bed on my lap right now and she just keeps licking that area. I called the vet and have a work-in appt at 3...but may have to sit there a few hours since it's a work in. Darn, I feel just sick...I even cried I felt so bad for her. I can't see any redness on the skin. It seems to be the top part of the foot that she is licking. What do you suppose I did to my sweet little Maddie? |
I did not know that pine needles are sharp . . . we have tons of them everywhere in my property :( I am sure the vet will take good care of taking out the pain . . . . we sure really worry about our furbabies! I think I would have cried too . . . . my furkids are sending her some warm kisses to Maddie to ease the pain . . . please keep us posted! |
Get better Maddie! |
Oh, no! I've been in a similar position before, so I know how bad YOU feel. I think we feel worse than they do when we feel like we've hurt them. In fact, I know we do!:( The last thing in the world we'd do is to hurt them and yet sometimes that is just the way it happens because we interact with them more than anyone else! I'm hoping it's nothing serious that a day or two won't cure. I don't know what else it could be unless there was a puncture into the skin in that area and the dish soap irritated it. Let us know what you find out, Connie! I remember when I was a kid I was giving one of our little chi's a bath in the sink instead of the tub (first mistake). On top of that, I removed the drain closure and you can pretty well probably guess what happened! Her little foot got caught in the drain and she was screaming and I was there by myself and scared to death and I got on the phone calling everyone to come help me. If I'd just thought, could have probably poured some vegetable oil down the drain and out it would have come. But I didn't and I was afraid if I pulled on it, I'd hurt her. Anyway, to make a long story short, it came out with her own pulling and she wasn't hurt at all. I felt worse than she did.:( |
Have you checked the foot over really good, and in between the pads? I bet there is a pine needle poking her in there somewhere. Don't know your time zone, but if you have a while to wait you might want to soak it in epson salt and warm water. |
I am so sorry Maddie is hurt. Keep us posted on what the vet has to say |
It does sound like she might have a needle stuck deep that maybe you combed over and irritated?? You know how painful splinters are for us. Hopefully the vet can shed some light on it quickly and it is nothing to worry about. Sending Maddie (and you) hugs in the meantime. |
Aww poor Maddie, i hope the vet can make her foot all better, and dont feel bad you were trying to help her! i really hope her foot stops hurting soon  |
I hope you feel better Maddie! |
I guess Maddie is still at the vet. Let us know how she is once you get home! Hope it's nothing serious and she's alright. :( |
Thank you everyone for your responses. We just got back from the vet. By the time we got there, she was able to put weight on her leg. The vet thinks that her kneecap may have moved and that is what caused all the pain because when he was checking that, she was in quite a bit of discomfort. He thinks she got it back in place on her own. Then when he was checking her foot, she was in a lot of discomfort. He shaved her foot (She now has a poodle cut on that foot) and checked it over carefully and could not find a thing wrong, except that she was crying when he touched certain parts. He even had a vet tech come in to help look because he said he's color blind and doesn't see red. She found an area that looked slightly red, but nothing extreme. So, I'm to put hydrocortizone cream in between her toes and watch her for any limping or favoring on that leg. So, at least Maddie isn't in that terrible pain any more. I felt so bad for her. Once today, when it was hurting her so bad, she took off running on 3 legs as if she was trying to run away from the pain, crying the whole time, but then had to stop and lick on that area. She's sleeping now. I think this whole ordeal wore her out. So, I don't know for sure what was wrong with her, but I can tell you all that she is much, much better and I shall be babying her something awful! Thanks for your concern!!! YorkieUSA...I can imagine how scared you were when that happened with you chi! I'm so glad that turned out okay! |

Poor Little Maddie! So sorry to hear she is in pain! She seems like she has had a rough time this summer, with maggots and owies. Starsky and Shylah send there love and hope for a speedy recovery. Question: Do you take her to the vet in those cute dresses? I bet they just adore her when they see her. When I get my babes all dolled up, I get a lot of compliments on how cute they are. People just eat it up. Just wondering!:getwell: |

CONNIE IM SO SORRY ABOUT MADDIES PAW...HOPE SHE FEELS BETTER SOON :) :) :) :) :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :) :) :) :) |
I'm glad to report that Maddie is doing great today! She's walking around just fine on her little poodle foot! I am so thankful! I just couldn't stand it to see her in that pain yesterday and to think I caused whatever it was. I am always careful with her knees when doing things to her, but I think this time, working on that one foot to get the sap off, I probably moved it wrong and made it slip a little. Anyway, thank goodness that is behnd us and she's back to feeling fine!!! Leigh...I usually dress Maddie when she goes to the vet, but yesterday I didn't because she felt so rotten...I just took her naked...but she did have a bow in her hair. LOL |
Wonderful!:) |

I was hopeing this is not what happened to maddie. I felt so bad for her. glad all is well. |
just reading through your post and i have a recommendation for you. chiropractic. your puppy has obviously had an injury and a little cream is not going to actually help that injury heal in corrrectly..its just going to cover up symptoms. if you are interested in learning about chiropractic for your puppy email me. ill be more than happy to tell you what its done for my puppy. |
