Sick yorkie Kidneys' Shutting Down Our yorkie that's only 2 years old, Macy yesterday we had to take her to the vet b/c she was very lethargic. She had no energy and as we know how Yorkies are they are full of energy. She had pooped all over herself, and it had blood in it. Vet said she had a bacteria infection and gave her a shot and some antibiotic. That night she messed on herself again, and got lifeless...vet said she was going into shock, so we rushed her to the vet...they gave her some fluids and some other injections and morphine for her pain. We stayed up all night with her and thought she was getting better just weak. We took her back to the vet this morning for bloodwork, and found out there was a lot of bacteria and toxins in her body and that her kidneys were already starting to shut down. Her level on her kidney's were 90, whereas the doc said norm was 30. Shes in the hospital now getting iv's....we're hoping for a miracle. SHe's only two and our baby. Anybody every experienced something like this? |
God bless your little baby! Prayers going up for her that she will get well soon! I wish I had answers for you, but you're doing the best thing by letting the vet handle it. Good luck |
No experience there, but I'll be praying for your little Macy. I hope the vet can get her kidneys working again. Poor baby. Prayers and hugs to you both. |
we have not experienced anything like that in our home and hope we never do, so I can't offer any advice. we will all pray for your little one.:hands: :getwellso keep us updated. |
Prayers coming your way ! |
OMG I'm so so sorry ! How truly scary for you and I hope she pulls thru this....There was no warning signs ? I've never head of this either but wish you all the best and will say a prayer for your Macy :( :( :( :( |
No warning signs at all, that's what we cannot figure out. I don't know if it's bacteria, genetic, or what. She was fine the night before, and yesterday this is what happens......thanks to everyone for your caring. |
That is so sad I hope your baby pulls through this. I am praying for her |
I am so very sorry... I understand your heartbreak...... having a perfectly healthy baby one minute and one who is desperately ill the next is heartbreaking! Sending Get Well Quick hugs :ghug: |
We will be praying for the both you you.:getwellso |
Dear God, PLEASE take care of this baby and bring her home safe and healthy :hands: :hands: :hands: :hands: :hands: :hands: :hands: :hands: :hands: :hands: |
Oh, how VERY scarey. I will pray that she pulls through. One thing that may start shutting the kidneys down is grapes or raisens. Did she even by accident get any? Please let us know how she is doing. |
Update Thank you guys for your care and concern on Macy. I just called the vet today and they said that they had given Macy a round of IV and that she was now sitting up looking at the nurse. That doesn't sound like a lot and I'm not tryin to get my hopes up but to me that's a start. This morning she was lifeless and now she's sitting up. I hope this is a start to recovery for my little baby who will be two next month. Thanks guys. Ashley |

You're right...it is a step in the right direction. PLEASE keep us posted. I am definetly looking forward to hearing better and better news. |
Praying for her continued improvement. Sitting up is definitely a big step from lifeless. Common Macy, you can do it, Sweetie.:bighug: |
sending our prayers for Macy |
Sending hugs and prayers for your baby....:) |
God bless your poor baby!! I am so very sorry she is going through this. You both are in my thoughts and prayers!! |
Just talked to the vet today and he happend to be there today with her just got thru giving her another iv injection....actually got her to eat some special kidney diet food...so I'm hoping we are on the right track to getting better. He wouldn't tell me that she was getting better...said we wouldn't see any results until Tuesday, I'm assuming \they run labs again then? but wouldn't it make sense that since she's making this progress that hopefully she's getting better? i mean once kidneys start shutting down can they heal again?? |
I don't know much about the kidneys, but it seems like whatever the reason for the shutdown might have alot to do with whether or not they can start working again. I'll be praying for Macy and for a good report on Tuesday. Hang in there, Sweetie. |

I am sorry to hear about Macy, but hopefully she is improving. I do know what your going through my Gucci is 2 and last month was the month from hell. To make a long story short she went from being this healthy puppy to having being diagnosed with liver shunt, she had surgery last Thursday. Yes it is very stressful. Think postive thoughts and I will keep you both in my prayers. You have come to the right place for good thoughts and prayers , the people on here are very caring.. Keep us posted.. Gina |
Praying for your baby's quick return to health. |
awww I'm so deeply sorry to hear this! Your baby is in my prayers! I sure hope she is able to get better! Bless your family! |
Oh I'm praying for her that she gets better. Hoping it's better today. |

I pray that today is showing even more improvements. Please let us know. |
How is Macy doing today? Are you able to visit with her over the holiday weekend? |
Update on Macy Thanks you guys so much for your prayers and support, I believe it's working....this morning we were woke up by the vet calling to say that she'd improved so much we could actually come pick her up for the day. We went to get her and she was her hyper old self. She went from being lifeless to her hyper old self. You can tell she still doesn't feel well but its a huge improvement. I'm still not wanting to get my hopes up, but it's a huge improvment. We take her back to the vet a 530 today for more iv's and i'm not real sure if he will keep her or send her back home with us. I will let you guys know ! she is going to the bathroom on her own, so i would assume that her kidneys are working right?? she still has diarrhea but it is starting to take shape, if that makes sense. she is so happy to be at home and so are we!! thanks guys! ashley:aimeeyork |
Sounds like good news. I'm glad your baby is home with you at least for the day. Just because she is able to urinate doesn't really mean anything. Kidney disease is when the kidneys cannot remove the toxins, but they do drink more and pee more when something is wrong, except in the very last stages they might not urinate at all. Maybe she had acute renal failure caused by the bacteria which is totally reversible with treatment - the chronic form of renal failure is more serious and entails a strict diet. |
