My diabetic Yorkie has cataracts - just confirmed today Daisy is only 7 -1/2 years old. I am going to take her tomorrow to see if there is anything an eye vet can do, but evidently the only option would be surgery at about $2000 plus huge amounts of follow-up care. It is so sad - she loves to look out at the world, and I love to have her look at it and me! :( |
I am so sorry for your baby. I would call around some eye vets charge different prices. |

Sorry to hear about your baby. If you can afford the surgery and the risks are minimal then I would definitely look into it, but I think you will find that she will be just fine and will adjust so well it will amaze you. |
Doggie with cataracts - cope with her going blind or get surgery? The eye vet explained the options today - I'm trying to decide whether to just let things go and cope with it, so she will go blind for sure, or have her get surgery, which they say has 94% chance of success but could have complications, is really expensive and needs a lot of follow up. One thing that upset me was that if I don't get the surgery,or if the surgery doesn't go well, they may actually have to remove her eyes due to inflammation. They said this isn't really too big a deal for dogs, and showed me pictures of dogs that they had done this for. The dogs did look like they were happy enough, but the idea was so scary. Does anyone have any experience with making this choice? |

Eye Surgery for Yorkie's Cataracts? Trying to decide. I scheduled Daisy a week ago for surgery next Wednesday the 11th, and told the vet I'd let them know my final decision by tomorrow. Yikes - I don't know what to do. I want her to see, but I wonder if I'm more upset about her being blind that she would be. She can still see a bit, but that won't continue, so I have to decide. There comes a point where the surgery wouldn't do any good. This is hard! |
I will keep you and Daisy in my prayers, and that God will guide you to make the right decision. If the surgery is 94% that she will have her vision that is an excellent prognosis of her seeing again after surgery. God Bless.. and keep us posted... Gina |
I never had to make the decision that you are facing - but one of my little dogs was diabetic - and the vet did tell me that there was a good chance that she would become blind later on. But - she went on quickly to say that dogs adjust to blindness very well and can get along very well. Nevertheless, it is sad -- I'm sorry. ***** If you do decide not to have the surgery - and you have the time and ability to give her a little extra care - she will probably do very well. Cataract surgery for Diabetic Yorkie? Thanks - that is comforting. The vet was telling me this morning that he also thought Daisy would do fine if she is blind, unless there was some real reason she needed to be able to see, such as going to unfamiliar places often, which she doesn't really do. |
my dads dog is fine as long as he knows where everything is and no one moves things and he can still hear when the bicky tin is opened lol:D also my friends rescued shi zue (not sure how you spell that lol) was born blind and after she took him home it only took about 3 days for him to remember where everything was and he settled in really well. i think it bothers us more than them, the only thing i can say is different with my zac is he is a bit more clingy to me and cuddly. |
I just want to wish you good luck in whatever you deceide for Daisy. I can just immagine how difficult it must be to have to make such a decision. Bless you both and good luck to Daisy if she does have the surgery. |
Doggie had cataract surgery today - Vet said it went great. Well, I decided to go ahead with the surgery, and they did it today. They said it went extremely well, and now comes the next challenge - two weeks with her head in a cone, several eyedrops and some pills, hoping there won't be complications from the surgery or her diabetes, etc. Daisy is sitting or sleeping quietly now, still drowsy from anethesia and confused about the cone, but she can see already! It's a challenge to figure out how to feed her and give her water with the cone. Onward and upward, though. If it turns out well I will be very glad I did it. It's already great to see her looking at things - she seems amazed. Or maybe just dingy from the surgery. |
I wish DAISY a speedy recovery and am thinking of you too I am so pleased that the surgery is done, and Daisy can see. I am sure she will be back to her usual self soon. You will be so glad that you decided to do this, when you see the benfits for her. It is never easy going for surgery. I know how it feels my older two both had numerous surgeries. All for the best. My thoughts are with you both. Give Daisy a kiss and cuddle from me. :) |
I am sure Daisy will be very well . The old Yorkie of my friend had the same surgery few weeks ago and he is doing very well . |

My Gizmo has been blind for the last 8yrs. He has retinal atrophy and there is nothing that can be done for it. He adjusted to it very well except for bumping into things once in awhile. He is 13yrs old now and has other health issues. But, being blind didn't change him at all. :) |

Cataract Surgery Update - Good news! Well, Daisy did have cataract surgery on October 11th and is recovering nicely, so far. She could see right away, and she was so patient about wearing the cone collar for two weeks. She has a few more weeks to go to be completely healed, but it is such treat to see her being her own silly self again, chasing her sister, etc! If things keep going like they are, it will be a complete success. |
