Help; My dog is itching none stop..HELP Hi Everyone; My Shaq has been itching for the last week like crazy, i have changed his diet 2 days ago, putting aloe vera all day long on his skin where he itches to the point that he gets bad sores, has any one had this problem..HELP! |
Have no ideas but to get some Children's Benedryl in that baby til you find out the problem. Should give him some relief. |

It could be food allergies in that case you will probably have to switch him to a form of protein he hasn't been exposed to like duck, sometimes just getting a food with no corn is enough. I really doubt food allergies would start that fast and that intense. It could also be some type of skin problem like mange (mites) or an allergic reaction to flea bites that will need to be treated by a vet. Mange is something all dogs have, but a poor immune system or stressful situation can cause it to get out of control. It could be a contact allergy so an oatmeal based shampoo might provide some relief. You can also buy the aveeno oatmeal bath treatments they use for chicken pox and that should temporarily provide some relief. Benadryl may also provide relief. Since is just started so suddenly, look for something new he has been exposed to - new plant, new floor cleaner, new detergent on his bed, carpet freshener, etc. |
Another thought - your dog may have skin mites - IF I were you I'd take him back to the vet and have them do a skin scraping. That sure isn't normal for any dog |
If it's a food allergy or allergies from something outside. I use benadryl ...I use it for for allergies, bee stings..etc I have an older female who suffers with allergies I also changed the food I used to lamb and rice. If she goes to long in between baths she will start itching. Check with your Vet for correct doseage.. |
Probably Not Mange Having experience with both Sarcoptic and Demodectic Mange, I would like to halp set your mind at rest; both require a fair bit of time to cause problems, and both have skin lesions, usually beginning on ears, elbows, etc that make it easier to diagnose. A sudden-onset itching is usually a sign of allergic reaction to something in the air, feed, products touching the body or a sting/bite of some type. Changing the feed might help, if a food allergy, but it is better to withdraw all commercial feeds and feed only rice with chicken for a few days, to exclude any possiblity of multiple feed allergens. Anti-histamines like Benadryl are useful to stop the itching, so one can research the problem. |

I don't know if you get the seasonal allergies in your area, but we do here and the late summer/fall allergies are just starting here. Willy gets these & he is starting to chew non-stop. I usually give him Benedryl, after a while it stops working fo him & I have to go to the vet for Prednisone. Hayfever season usually lasts about 6 weeks. Desiree |
Ginger's been itching so much, we finally went last week for allergy testing. In the meantime she's on Benedryl and Medrol and I'm giving her Aveeno baths. Seems to be helping, although I'm gonna have to get the poor baby a haircut...she's got herself so choppy. Try the benedryl and Aveeno, you can even add some olive oil to her food if she seems dry. But, most importantly, get her to the vet... |
Allergies... food or seasonal? Mites? Could be lots of stuff I guess and I see you're getting advise from those that have dealt with it. Tatum started itching a few weeks ago and it finally hit me that she had gotten 2 or 3 baths with her new PetSilk shampoo and conditioner when she started the scratching. I was really unhappy because I thought it made her hair look and smell gorgeous but apparently, it's too drying for her skin. I think it took a couple baths to finally make her start itching but when I realized that this might be the cause, I bathed her in her old stuff and she's been itch-free ever since. I'm going to try the PetSilk again in the future just to see if that's what did it. You'll need to really think back and try to remember if anything has been changed in his diet, baths, food, etc. And then see the vet if you can't come up with anything. Good luck!! |
