Here is information about Parvo that I have on my site. Hope it helps some. You have to be careful your other dog does not get it and cleaan the area that they stay in really good.



Canine Parvovirus is an acute, highly contagious disease of dogs that was first described in the early 1970's. The virus has a special affinity for attacking rapidly reproducing cells, such as those lining the gastrointestinal tract. The disease is transmitted by oral contact with infected feces. The virus is shed in large amounts in the stools of acutely infected dogs for up to several weeks following infection. Parvo can be carried on the dog's hair and feet, as well as on contaminated crates, shoes, and other objects.
Parvo affects dogs of all ages, but most cases occur in puppies 6 to 20 weeks of age. Following an incubation period that averages four to five days, the acute illness begins with depression, vomiting and diarrhea. Some dogs have no fever, while others have high fever (up to 106°F). Pups with severe abdominal pain exhibit a tucked-up abdomen. Diarrhea is profuse and contains mucus and/or blood. Dehydration develops rapidly.

Suspect parvo in all pups with the abrupt onset of vomiting and diarrhea. The most efficient way to diagnose parvo is to identify either the virus or the virus antigens in stools. An in-office blood serum test (ELISA) is available for rapid veterinary diagnosis. False negatives do occur. Virus isolation techniques are more precise, but require an outside laboratory.

TREATMENT: This disease requires intensive veterinary management. In all but mild cases, hospitalization is essential to correct dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Intravenous fluids and medications to control vomiting and diarrhea are often required. Puppies and dogs should not eat or drink until the vomiting has stopped. This can take three to five days. Antibiotics are prescribed to prevent septicemia and other bacterial complications, which are the usual cause of death. The outcome depends upon the virulence of the specific strain of parvovirus, the and and the immune status of the dog, and how quickly the treatment is started.

PREVENTION: Thoroughly clean and disinfect the quarters of infected animals. Parvo is an extremely hardy virus that resists most household cleaners and survives on premises for months. The most effective disinfectant is household bleach in a 1:32 dilution. The bleach must be left on the contaminated surface for 20 minutes before being rinsed.

thank you guys so much.... I really appreciate this.. it didn't dawn on me until now but what if they want to keep her overnight? Everyone goes home at 5pm so she will be all alone? What if something happens in the evening and she needs help? Should I bring her home or leave her alone there?

When you talk to your vet this afternoon when you call, you need to ask him if there is going to be someone there 2nite to watch her. A lot of vets don't have anyone stay overnight. If that is the case, I would take her to a 24 hour vet when your vet closes so someone can keep an eye on her all night. She needs to stay hooked up to an IV so she doesn't dehydrate. One of the biggest risks to dogs who contract Parvo is dehydration.

I agree, unfortunatly there is not a 24hour vet hospital here... so I will ask. Thank you

ok.... just spoke with the vet it is 1:30pm my time and they said I should not expect any type of results today at all, they said the 1st day they try to control the vomitting and diarehea , day 2 they try to give her liquids and if she can keep them down on day 3 they try to give her food, if all is well then she goes home.. but they said I should not expect anything new today.... so I am hoping that she makes it through the night and hopefully we will be one step closer to recovery.. I pray to god that is the outcome... I feel a bit better..so I'm hoping those are my insticts telling me she is going to be okay.

They also told me that she will stay there for a couple of days and nobody stays overnight they just go in and monitor her every so often(i don't buy that, but all I can do is have faith). So I will check up with them at 4 and then tomorrow morning at 8 am... thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers...

Did they say how she was doing? Did they say anything about her spending the night?

yes she will be spending several nights there, my poor baby, but anything to get her home safe and better..... I already gave Gizmo some of the antibiotics they gave Madda "just in case ".... all I can do now is pray for her health.

You might want to seriously consider taking other precautions for Gizmo. Parvo is a virus and antibiotics won't get rid of or prevent viruses...antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections. That is why you can't give any kind of medicines to get rid of Parvo once a dog contracts it. You can only treat the symptoms and hope that the immune system will fight off the virus on its own. That is why puppies are so much more susceptible than adults...puppies' immune systems just aren't as developed. Gizmo seriously may need a Parvo vaccine. Look at those websites people have posted for the steps to take to prevent Gizmo from getting it. I know one thing is to wash out food and water bowls with diluted Clorox bleach. It is so contagious and the the last thing you need right now is for Gizmo to get it!

She is in the best hands now. Is it possible for you to go and visit her? Maybe if she sees you she will know what she's fighting for.

It sounds more hopeful! I would ask if they could recommend putting her with a vet that has someone there 24/7 if at all possible. I would feel so much better knowing she was being monitored all night.

UPDATE: 2:10pm Central: Dr. Moseley called right now and told me that she just stood up.... he said she is not out of the woods yet but that it's slight good sign..let's just hope she continues to get better.. .they told me not to call until tomorrow around 9am ...so I am sure they will call me and let me know any new information..... thank you all again for your good prayers... thank you thank you thank you..
