Non stop snorting?? help!! Ever since last night, Princess has been making these snorting noises through her nose... and then once in a while she has these "attacks" where it looks like she can't breathe and snorts non stop and she looks so scared!! these little "attacks" happen for like around 30 secs... I dont know what else to do but just pat her back and try to calm her down?? When I look at her while shes having these "attacks" it just looks like shes trying really hard to breathe through her nose but cant... her mouth is opened like shes going to throw up, but she doesnt.. then all of a sudden it stops... then the same cycle continues after a while.. I dont know what to do?? Oh btw, couple days ago, she went to the vet and got that intranasal shot where they squirted the vaccine up her nose... maybe it dried up there or something and now she can't breathe??? Has this happened to anyone before???? |
Go to www.glassyorkies.com - choose hypoglycemia on the left and then choose collapsed trachea. This is the best article I've seen to try to distinguish between reverse sneezing and collapsed trachea. It is probably harmless reverse sneezing, but if you suspect collapsed trachea you need to see a vet. |
Don't get panicky yet BUT most of the show breeders I have spoken to will not use the intranasal vaccines because of this very problem. If it persists I would certainly call your veterinarian. Good Luck. |

Kona got her cough right after that shot too... hmmm |

BORDETELLA VACCINE: The bordetella vaccinations are of some help in controlling kennel cough and other respiratory infections caused by this bacteria. Anyone who has show dogs, kennel dogs or who boards their dogs may benefit from this optional protection. However, some dogs are sensitive to this vaccination and may develop coughing, runny nose, slight congestion. As with people, this is a live virus that can cause the symptoms of this disease although it will help boost the immunity. There are two vaccine types for this protection. One being an injection and the other being a nasal vaccine. (Spray type). The intranasal vaccine gives the most immediate immunity. The injectable bacterin must be given twice for opptimum protection. The first injection is given at age 5-6wks of age and is repeated two to four weeks later. Puppies can be given the intranasal vaccine as early as 3 weeks of age. |

Thank you for that information. Very good to know for the future!! |

Where did you get this information? Viruses aren't live (actually I think it's a huge science debate, but I'm pretty sure from what I learned, their not), but vaccines definitly aren't. I believe thier a mutated virus, but have to double check in the text book that's in the car. I'm just wondering because if it's a site that says virus's are alive, then I don't know about how good the rest of what the site says is. Glad I found this thread...Rocky's been snorting for the past week or so. |
If she's snorting from excitment or cant seem to catch her breath - gently cover the nostrils with your fingers...I sort of tap the nose and it really helps when my girls do this. You want her to breath thru her mouth.... when I say cover the nostrils I mean for a few seconds only.....I use the ONE Mississippi ...Two Mississipppi type of count and release...works every time ! |

Some vaccines are killed virus and some are live modified viruses. While they are not injecting say the parvo virus they are injecting a live modified virus similar to parvo that the body will create antibodies against so if the pup is exposed to parvo the antibodies created to fight the modified live similar virus will also be able to destroy the actual parvo virus. I don't know of any controversy saying viruses aren't alive, they can mutate and adapt so as far as I'm concerned they are alive. The only controversy I know of in relation to viruses is that antibiotics are not effective against them (only effective against bacterium). |
Quote:
They aren't considered alive because they have no DNA or RNA. Yes, they can mutate (that is why theres a new flu vaccine every year). I just spend a whole semester on this stuff, lol. |
I just did some very quick research on whether a virus is living or not. You're right it's under debate (not decided), but determining this seems to be important for the theory of evolution. My personal views don't let me consider evolution, only a divine creator so I don't know much about this. So maybe the modified live vaccine is not technically alive according to the scientific defintion of life, but once it joins with a cell it has attributes of life. From canismajor.com Which is better, killed virus vaccines or modified-live types? Each type of vaccine has strengths and weaknesses. Modified-live vaccines provide stronger, longer-lasting, and more rapid protection, including local immunity. They are less expensive and may require only one dose to be effective. They have a potential to become active and cause disease, especially in a patient with a weakened immune system; to create immunosuppression, or to cause abortions in pregnant dogs. Careful handling and storage are required to prevent breakdown of the active ingredients. Killed vaccines cannot become virulent and are less likely to be immunosuppressive or cause abortions. They remain stable during storage. They are more likely to cause allergic reactions, require more initial injections and more frequent booster shots, and do not produce local immunity. A good example of the differences between modified-live and killed vaccines is the use of Bordatella vaccinations for kennel cough. Killed vaccines require two injections but are only 60-80 percent effective against disease and don't provide local immunity at the level of the airway. Modified- live vaccines are given intranasally, require only one dose, and start providing local immunity within 48 hours. |

1 Attachment(s) Misha my Maltese has been doing this. I took her to the Vet a couple of weeks ago to see is she had clogged tear ducts. He put a solution in them to get a better view. Ever since then she has been snorting like she is having a hard time breathing through her nose. I took her back to the Vet & she didn't snort one bit. He checked her lungs. He looked at her trachea, in surgery to see if that was it,( she was having her baby canines removed) he said she was fine. She does it mostly in the morning after lying down all night. I don't know what else to try either. I bought a vaporizer, were trying that next. My Vet said nothing is wrong, he just hasn't seen her when she is doing this. I feel so hopeless watching her. |
Could it be reverse sneezing? My Bitsy used to do this all the time.... sounded like she couldn't breathe.... she seems to have outgrown it. I used to put my finger over her nose and it would stop. Hope you find out what is causing your pup's problem. |
Rocky's going to the vet today for this. I think he's fine, he's been acting fine...and yesterday he was doing it so I was going to give him a piece of cheese to get whatevers in his throat. As soon as he saw the cheese he stopped. He was doing it again this morning and my boyfriend told me to make an appointment today, so I guess it's better to be safe than sorry. |
Did you ever find out what is was with Rocky? Misha & Piper are still doing it. I have Vet apts the 10th. |

Yeah, he has nasal drainage. He's on medicine for it, so far I think it's helping, but we'll see :) Good luck at your appointment! |
This is The Quick Spoon's wife......I guess that I need to get my own account as well. But I just wanted to add to this thread, that we've been facing the same dilema with our little Ender. We gave him the inrta-nasal bortatella vacine. BIG MISTAKE! From that point on he's been coughing, snoring at night, reverse sneezing, snorting periodically during the day, has smelly discharge coming from his eyes, etc. We've tried just about everything that we can think of....a lot of which was information from all of you on this site :)....we've done the humidifier, benedril, antibiotics, nose/eye drops from PetMeds.com (which was the most successfull that we've encountered). The most recent that we've done is our vet recommended that we give Ender a steriod shot. He told us that if Ender's symptoms were "alergies" that the shot would alleviate the symptoms that Ender has had since the vacine. We did the shot, and it didn't help. Which now, according to our vet means that he may have some kind of intra-nasal infection (a fungus) and would need to go inside the nasal cavity, get a culture, and run tests on it, and go from their. Which, of course, is a very expensive procedure. I guess the point that I am trying to get at, to be wary of intra-nasal vacinations (a regular shot is available for the bortetella). And anyone that has any success in overcoming this problem, we're open to suggestions. |

Hi!! Sounded like everything I went through except the discharge from the eyes.. she got a steroid shot too.. it is weird how doctors claim it is from allergies.. RIGHT after they get the intranasal.. she now every once in a while still does the reverse sneezing.. but just plug up his nose and calm him down (like pretend nothing is wrong) and he should stop pretty fast. Good Luck! |
Pippa does this when scared or very excited! It used to frighten me but now i just smooth her and tell it ok and she stops real quick. |
Both my girls do it when they get excited - and Chanel sometimes does it after getting a 'dwink' what I do is GENTLY hold my fingers on their nostrils and lean their little heads down towards the chest - it gets them to take a breath thru the mouth - which will stop the snorting - it works really well.....I tried massaging the neck but that never stopped it - but tapping on the nostrils works great - you do it just enough to make them inhale |
i have to try the tapping on the nostrils.. the other day lexi went crazy when i got home from work.. she was snorting non stop... she was so scared. i held her nose everytime so she would open her mouth. it stopped but a second later she would so it again. so thank villette im going to try tapping her nose the next time it happens... its just so scary |

there was a little dog in Petsmart last time I was there that started doing it in the checkout line - I knelt down and held his little nose and he stopped immediately - his mom was standing there with her mouth hanging open and said he usually doesn't stop for like 5 full minutes and from now on - she was going to do that herself - so it DOES work:) |

I feel better by reading other peoples experiences on this, so now I know why Trea is making these noises. I will still take her to the Vet tho. |
I Can't Believe It!!! OMG! I'm amazed to see how many of you are suffering with the same symptoms as we are! This all makes such great sense to me now!!! I took my dog in to have her shots updated two weeks ago tomorrow. I'm so upset right now because I feel that the Vet should have been professional enough to ask me if my dog even needed that dumb nose drop thing! My dog has no need for it!!! She's not very social and doesn't enjoy dog parks, or doggie day cares or anything like that. AHHH!!! I had to take my dog to see a different Vet this past week because of the awful sneezing/choking symptoms she was (is) having. AND because the 1st doctor told me my dog had a cyst and it needed to be removed right away. I was super concerned not only that but devastated to think that my poor babe was in huge danger. Only to find out at the second opinion, that I don't have anything to worry about! Anyway, back to the subject....The second Vet told me to give my dog Baby Benadryl and to make sure she takes it easy for a while. He diagnosed her with having "Backward Sneezing". But, I'm still concern because I feel that the symptoms have worsened. She not only chokes/can't breath/snorts now, but also she has started sneezing, w/ watery eyes and possibly a fever too. She has done the backward sneeze before, but she's never done it this frequently. I'm very worried that she might have something worse going on now. Does anyone know what to do now??? I've tried the finger on the nose and that does work for the choking part... but now I?m more concerned about the added symptoms. WHAT SHOULD I DO GUYS???? :( Please advice! Oh.... and if any of you live in the LA area... DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOGS TO WARREN ANIMAL HOSPITAL IN SILVER LAKE!!! THEY SUCK! This all started because of their carelessness and lack of attention to the patient! All we needed was a rabbies shot. Not a $75 vet bill at the end of the visit for shots/drops we didn't even need. WHO CARES ABOUT THE $$$ it's the fact that I paid $ only to make my dog SICK that really bothers me! ahhh!!!! |

Sounds like it might be "Reverse Sneezing" Go here Yorkie Health and click on the link for reverse sneezing and see if it sounds like it. If it is the reverse sneezing, when it happens, you can, put your fingers over his/her nostrils, forcing them to breath through their mouth it will stop. Quote:

My babies do this from time to time, it is VERY scary. The last time my yorkie poo did this I rushed him to the vet and they said there was no swelling or trachea issues, so it was most likely allergies. They can have sneezing attacks where they can't catch their breath. She said next time it happens to hold him gently, take him in a cool or air conditioned room and talk softly to him to help him relax and it should subside. I'm not sure if this is what's happening to your baby, but it sounds similar to my furbabies situation and I wanted to share. |
I too am a new yorkie owner and we had the intranasal bordatella also. Taz started doing the reverse sneezing thing and we were very concerned. The more I read on this site, I was more relieved to hear it wasn't something more serious. It has been about 4 wks since his Vet visit and the symptoms are not as bad as they were. He only does it now when he is excited. I think, (my personal opinion) that the bordatella irritated his throat and as time went on he does it less and less. |
