Rocky's going to the vet today for this. I think he's fine, he's been acting fine...and yesterday he was doing it so I was going to give him a piece of cheese to get whatevers in his throat. As soon as he saw the cheese he stopped. He was doing it again this morning and my boyfriend told me to make an appointment today, so I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

Did you ever find out what is was with Rocky? Misha & Piper are still doing it. I have Vet apts the 10th.

Yeah, he has nasal drainage. He's on medicine for it, so far I think it's helping, but we'll see :)

This is The Quick Spoon's wife......I guess that I need to get my own account as well. But I just wanted to add to this thread, that we've been facing the same dilema with our little Ender. We gave him the inrta-nasal bortatella vacine. BIG MISTAKE! From that point on he's been coughing, snoring at night, reverse sneezing, snorting periodically during the day, has smelly discharge coming from his eyes, etc. We've tried just about everything that we can think of....a lot of which was information from all of you on this site :)....we've done the humidifier, benedril, antibiotics, nose/eye drops from PetMeds.com (which was the most successfull that we've encountered). The most recent that we've done is our vet recommended that we give Ender a steriod shot. He told us that if Ender's symptoms were "alergies" that the shot would alleviate the symptoms that Ender has had since the vacine. We did the shot, and it didn't help. Which now, according to our vet means that he may have some kind of intra-nasal infection (a fungus) and would need to go inside the nasal cavity, get a culture, and run tests on it, and go from their. Which, of course, is a very expensive procedure. I guess the point that I am trying to get at, to be wary of intra-nasal vacinations (a regular shot is available for the bortetella). And anyone that has any success in overcoming this problem, we're open to suggestions.

Hi!! Sounded like everything I went through except the discharge from the eyes.. she got a steroid shot too.. it is weird how doctors claim it is from allergies.. RIGHT after they get the intranasal.. she now every once in a while still does the reverse sneezing.. but just plug up his nose and calm him down (like pretend nothing is wrong) and he should stop pretty fast.

Pippa does this when scared or very excited! It used to frighten me but now i just smooth her and tell it ok and she stops real quick.

Both my girls do it when they get excited - and Chanel sometimes does it after getting a 'dwink'

what I do is GENTLY hold my fingers on their nostrils and lean their little heads down towards the chest - it gets them to take a breath thru the mouth - which will stop the snorting - it works really well.....I tried massaging the neck but that never stopped it - but tapping on the nostrils works great - you do it just enough to make them inhale

i have to try the tapping on the nostrils.. the other day lexi went crazy when
i got home from work.. she was snorting non stop... she was so scared.
i held her nose everytime so she would open her mouth. it stopped but a second later she would so it again. so thank villette im going to try tapping her nose the next time it happens... its just so scary

It works - I swear. You want to hold it just enough that they take a quick breath with their mouth - it's like they get frozen up and can't stop it....

there was a little dog in Petsmart last time I was there that started doing it in the checkout line - I knelt down and held his little nose and he stopped immediately - his mom was standing there with her mouth hanging open and said he usually doesn't stop for like 5 full minutes and from now on - she was going to do that herself - so it DOES work:)

My little Trea does the snorting when she is very happy too. I made an appointment to get her checked, because being a "new" yorkie owner it truly makes me scared when she does this. I had to log on Yorkie Talk this morning to see if anyone else has experienced the same thing, and low and behold yes there are others out their.

I feel better by reading other peoples experiences on this, so now I know why Trea is making these noises. I will still take her to the Vet tho.

OMG! I'm amazed to see how many of you are suffering with the same symptoms as we are! This all makes such great sense to me now!!! I took my dog in to have her shots updated two weeks ago tomorrow. I'm so upset right now because I feel that the Vet should have been professional enough to ask me if my dog even needed that dumb nose drop thing! My dog has no need for it!!! She's not very social and doesn't enjoy dog parks, or doggie day cares or anything like that. AHHH!!!

I had to take my dog to see a different Vet this past week because of the awful sneezing/choking symptoms she was (is) having. AND because the 1st doctor told me my dog had a cyst and it needed to be removed right away. I was super concerned not only that but devastated to think that my poor babe was in huge danger. Only to find out at the second opinion, that I don't have anything to worry about! Anyway, back to the subject....The second Vet told me to give my dog Baby Benadryl and to make sure she takes it easy for a while. He diagnosed her with having "Backward Sneezing". But, I'm still concern because I feel that the symptoms have worsened. She not only chokes/can't breath/snorts now, but also she has started sneezing, w/ watery eyes and possibly a fever too. She has done the backward sneeze before, but she's never done it this frequently.

I'm very worried that she might have something worse going on now. Does anyone know what to do now???

I've tried the finger on the nose and that does work for the choking part... but now I?m more concerned about the added symptoms. WHAT SHOULD I DO GUYS???? :( Please advice!

Oh.... and if any of you live in the LA area... DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOGS TO WARREN ANIMAL HOSPITAL IN SILVER LAKE!!! THEY SUCK! This all started because of their carelessness and lack of attention to the patient! All we needed was a rabbies shot. Not a $75 vet bill at the end of the visit for shots/drops we didn't even need. :mad: WHO CARES ABOUT THE $$$ it's the fact that I paid $ only to make my dog SICK that really bothers me! ahhh!!!!

Just curious to know what med you give for the drainage? My yorkie is very congested and she has a lot of drainage and it makes her cough. When she lays down and has her neck raised she does fine but as soon as she gets in the typical lying down yorkie postition (head down b/w both front paws) the drainage makes her cough. Woudln't mind knowing what med yuo give, I can ask my vet about it to see if we can give it to my Samie.

Sounds like it might be "Reverse Sneezing" Go here Yorkie Health and click on the link for reverse sneezing and see if it sounds like it. If it is the reverse sneezing, when it happens, you can, put your fingers over his/her nostrils, forcing them to breath through their mouth it will stop.

My babies do this from time to time, it is VERY scary.

The last time my yorkie poo did this I rushed him to the vet and they said there was no swelling or trachea issues, so it was most likely allergies.

They can have sneezing attacks where they can't catch their breath.

She said next time it happens to hold him gently, take him in a cool or air conditioned room and talk softly to him to help him relax and it should subside.

I'm not sure if this is what's happening to your baby, but it sounds similar to my furbabies situation and I wanted to share.

I too am a new yorkie owner and we had the intranasal bordatella also. Taz started doing the reverse sneezing thing and we were very concerned. The more I read on this site, I was more relieved to hear it wasn't something more serious. It has been about 4 wks since his Vet visit and the symptoms are not as bad as they were. He only does it now when he is excited. I think, (my personal opinion) that the bordatella irritated his throat and as time went on he does it less and less.
