Cry My Yorkie acting strange after groomers

My baby Rudy (4yrs old) came home from a new groomers and he is acting strange. He is nervous acting and jumpy. He acts like he is seeing something thats not there. He has jumpy energy and has light trembling ever so often. His eyes were a bit glassy when I picked him up now they are wide open bug eyed like. He is not his self at all. He ate some but refuses to eat is never refused treats or to play with his toys. He never does that. I specifically told the groomer no sedation and she said they never sedate. His hair cut was not complete looking on him or my cat. The cat is fine acting. He does not run loose outside at all. I am very worried about Rudy. It is late 12am. If he is not better acting by the morning I will call the vet. Has anyone else had this happen after a grooming?

I'd take him to the vet for a once-over, and I would definitely never take him to that groomer again regardless of what the vet found. I would think that either he was sedated or he was traumatized by the experience he had there.

I totally agree. Either he was sedated or traumatized. I hope your little guy is himself today.

Default strange??

I know this may sound STRANGE so don't everyone jump on me; please. But this sounds like what happened to my little boy (not fur baby) I found out my sister and her husband were smoking pot while watching him and second hand smoke made my son HIGH!! could the groomer been smoking pot while grooming????? I KNOW; I said sounds strange.

Unless your groomer works in a vet office it is highly unlikely she sedated him. Even if it was a vet office it is unlikely that they sedated him without discussing it with you and charging you plenty for the sedation. I think the pot smoking theory is pretty unlikely also. Most likely he is stressed or exhausted. Has he ever acted like this after grooming before? Maybe find out how they dried him. Some places use heated dryers which is not good. I hope he is better today.

I had one tranquilized WITHOUT my permission. So, yes, it is possible! You can tell because they act like little zombies. Glassy-eyed, too. The one's around here just buy the tranquilizing supplies from vet's.

Some of the groomers also use boxes to dry them in and that also could be a possibility. They are set up as just a box and a blower in the end. It's a heinous and cruel practice. I saw one in a groomer's salon once. Ran like you know what to get out of that place.

Gosh! I hope your little one is OK. Please let us know. What a horrible way to start out grooming!

I would get him to the vet to be checked. Not long ago, I saw something on people's court or one of those court shows and a dog had become overheated by the dryers and needed care right away. Poor little guy...sounds like he's had a terrible day! Keep us updated!

Default Seeing vet today

Rudy still acting strange. I made an appt. with the vet but its not till 3pm. We called the groomers and she said they do not use anything but all natural products. He had no flea bath. He was not around other dogs and none of their other animals are sick. They sounded concerned and wanted us to call them as soon as we find out anything. I know a lot of people that use them.
Rudy did not show any of these symptoms before going to the groomers. I did not like that it took from 9 am till 3:30 pm to get him back. She shaved him where I told her to but she did not trim his skirt. My cat she started to do his feet than she must of remembered I said not to shave his legs, tail or head. So it looks like she tried to even up and blend in the legs. She did not trim his head hair or blend it in evenly. He has hair from his shoulders up.
When I picked up Rudy in the afternoon I noticed a dead animal smell where the kennels are. That I didn't expect.
He does not have symptoms of over heating. You can get him excited and playful but not as easily. He does not go after his favorite toy which he usually does even when he is sick. He is jumpy and either sleeps or stares at the walls and jerks his head like he is seeing something. He does this for awhile and then goes to sleep in out of the way places. He is still eating but not the treats he likes like yogurt. He gets to lick the spoon after I am done eating. You know how it is we know when something isn't quite right with our Yorkie kids.
Around here allot of places use sedation. It is easy to get for the groomers. They do not charge you for sedation if its not mentioned up front. Rudy and my cat stand perfectly still for grooming so I see no reason why it would be used. If it was used I would expect lethargy.
I am just a very worried mommy. I think next time I will buy some clippers and do it myself. Thanks to you all!I will let you know what the vet says.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean when you say you know when something isn't right with them. Someone else might not notice, but YOU definitely know. Wish you luck and gosh I hope you can get some answers.

Default Rudy

Hi Susan, Please let us know what you find out from the vet. I will be needing a groomer real soon and want to know what to look out for.

I hope it is not anything major.
Goodluck.

Default Posted some pics of Rudy after the vet

The first few pics is Rudy after the vet. His eyes just do not look the same to me. Even without the glare they looked oily or glassy. Plus they have been watering. But that's gotten better. I will keep in touch.

Love Rudy back from vet

The vet did a complete go over of Rudy. She wants us to keep monitoring him for a few days and see if he keeps improving. She thinks he found the the grooming to be traumatic. He has gone to the groomers before just not this groomer. He may of been afraid of being left or they were not good with him. She said she would not take him back to that groomer.
She said sometimes they use oily drops in their eyes to help keep the soap out. She also said he could of very well of been given something. She said she has had people coming in with pets that were sedated. The tranquilizers the groomers use is very inexpensive.
She did notice some minimal hazing with his eyes. He also looks like he has a floater in one of his eyes. He may be seeing that. We also got a confirmation that he has that condition where his kneecaps slide just when he moves his back legs walking.
I would recomend that people ask their vet who to recomend for grooming. They will also tell you who not to take your babies to. Also do a tour of their facilities, I wish I did.She said she did not know this place did grooming but she knows she wouldn't leave a pet at their kennels.
Rudy has been showing improvement as the afternoon has passing. Thanks to all it helps having support. I will keep you posted.

Poor Rudy - he does look a little off in the pictures. My sister had a bad experience with a groomer but did find a good one through her vet.
So glad Rudy is improving. Give him extra love today.
