Yorkie attacked by UNLEASHED Black Lab...w/pix Heres the details from Saturday and this weekend: Mom was walking Buster (3 year old Yorkshire Terrier) and out of the blue came a Black Lab. Ran right at Buster and bit down hard and shook him. Owner came running and grabbed the lab, but Buster was hurt bad. My Mom ran home with the dog and they called the vet and quickly drove him into the vet hospital. He was in pretty bad shape Saturday night the last I heard. He had to have a surgery Saturday night to re-attach musle to his bone and skin, as well as had to have the puncture wounds cleaned. He now is doing a little better says the doc (but looks horrible and if not for the pain meds, is in a lot of pain). Cops gave the owners a WARNING. But I looked up and according to Wisconsin law, they should have at LEAST gotten a ticket for a dog not being on a leash, and having that dog cause destruction to a person, domestic animal, or property. Got call this morning from my mother and apparently the doctor said that he is now putting weight on his left front leg (which they thought had really bad nerve damage). So that is a good sign. He will be going home today sometime and then will have the drainage tubes taken out on Wed. I will keep this thread updated in the coming days if anyone cares. Pictures are below, and I apologize in advance for the quality. All I had with me was my cell phone. http://xs101.xs.to/xs101/06220/06-04-06_1020.jpg http://xs101.xs.to/xs101/06220/06-04-06_1021.jpg http://xs101.xs.to/xs101/06220/06-04-06_1022.jpg |
I feel terrible for you and your baby. To have a baby attacked by any animal not leashed should be fined at the least. Do you know who the dog owner is. And have they offered to pay the vet bill? I am praying that your baby comes through this. I am so overly protective of my Dollie and this is just why. People are idiots when it comes to their animals and this is proof again that we have to practically have one hand on our babies at all times when out in the public especially. I am so sorry this had to happen to this precious little creature. God Bless .... |

thanks for your support. He is not mine though, he is my Parents. Though he is like a little brother to me, for sure. |
Ah, poor thing! That is horrible, Yes they should be responsible for the vet bills, and no fine no nothing?? Do you have leash laws? |
Poor baby, I wish him a full and speedy recovery. Jessica |

yes, there are leash laws. Father will be contacting Chief of Police today, as the officer who was on call apparently didnt know what he was doing, or maybe did not care. |
OMG, that poor baby!! So glad that little Buster seems to be doing better. Please keep us updated and I will keep Buster in my prayers. :getwellso |
That is horrible!! Get well soon little Buster! |
That is terrible, poor little Buster, i hope he is going to be ok. I'd make shure they get a ticket plus be responsible for all the vet bills, that is the least they can do ! |
OMG how awful. I'm so glad that he is doing better. Good for your dad he definitely needs to contact someone else in the PD and at the least the owners of the other need to be ordered to pay all vet bills. Please keep us posted. |
OMG poor BABY ! That's just awful and Labs are usually so nice and gentle :( how awful for him - It just goes to show that NO strange dog is safe around little yorkies - We really have to always be on the lookout. Poor little guy - We're sending get well wishes to him and he's lucky to be alive.... bless his heart ! |
Poor Buster! It's good to know that he is going back home today.:) I hope those irresponsible owners get a ticket after your dad goes to talk to the police chief. |
How horrible for that baby! I keep my eyes open wide around here for loose dogs. even if they are gentle dogs my Buckeye might change their attitude. any dog can accidentally get loose but there should be a fine and they also should pay the vet bills. if mine did that to another dog i certainly would offer to pay and give support where ever needed to the injured. I hope your mothers yorkie gets better soon. |
Poor little Buster. I would follow-up with the Police and explain what a dangerous situation this is and just how bad Buster was because of it. Once a dog attacks, it is only a matter of time before they do it again. And the owner's should be paying all Buster's medical bills. We'll keep Buster in our prayers for a fast, full and speedy recovery. Let him know all his fellow YT'ers are rooting for him! |
Oh, that poor baby! I too say that the lab owner should have gotten a ticket and should also be responsible for the vet bills. How to go about making them pay the bills, I don't know. Hope you find out! And yes, every lab I've known has been pretty docile (AFTER getting over the puppy stage) so I'm thinking something must have provoked this lab. Not your parents dog.... maybe something health-related with the lab? Please keep us updated! |
Oh, what a tragedy... I am so sorry to hear about Buster. I will keep him in my prayers. It sounds like he is slowly doing a little better, I hope he continues to improve. He will need lots of love and attention. How is your Mom doing? She had to be traumatized over this whole thing as well. Please tell her that we send lots of love and support. The owner of the lab certainly should be responsible to pay for vet bills.... Keep us posted on how Buster is doing.... |
Poor baby! I hope he has a quick painless recovery. As for the lab, did he get lose or were the owners being idiots and letting him run lose? |
I wish your baby the best while he is recovering. |
You should have no problems getting vet costs covered by going to small claims court, if that should be come necessary. I recommend you write down all the details before you forget--date time, etc. Keep taking photos too. Get a copy of the vet's file. Maybe the owner of the lab will pay the bills just because it is the right thing to do. |
poor baby...:( we send our luv and prayers. get well soon. |
Oh gee.... how horrible. They are certainly responsible for the vet bills. I had once been walking my little yorkie a few years ago. I turned a corner and I see a UNLEASHED DOBERMAN running towards my baby. I yanked the harness up and she was in my chest in a second and I covered her. Owner ran out and pulled his dog back and told me it\'s OK, and that he was very gentle and just wanted to look. I was mortified! Never trust anybody. poor buster..... hugs and kisses going his way....... |
Every Yorkie owner\'s nightmare! Make sure that dog was current on his rabies shots and make sure that owner pays every cent of the vet bills. That\'s horrible. |
That is horrible!! Poor baby, I hope he get to feeling better soon. I don\'t care how friendly a dog is, there are always situations and unexplained reasons where a friendly dog will go after another one for no reason. I have a theory, not saying that it is true, but I believe that the bigger dogs see yorkies or other really small dogs as prey, they are so small and fragile, they are just like a rabbit in sense that they are helpless when it is a 5 pound yorkie against a 80 pound or more dog. Labs for instance are used for retrieving small game and prey. I also have big dogs and I love them to death and I could say they are friendly which they are, but that does not mean that there could never be a situation as to where one of them would go after a yorkie, it is all unpredictable. Bottom line is, that lab should have been leashed and the owners are responsible for the vet bill and a fine. Did they apoligize or offer any sympathy or help?? |
UPDATE: Well, the gf and I stopped by my parents house last night to visit with Buster, as he came home from the hospital yesterday afternoon. He still has his drain tubes in his back and side, but those will hopefully come out on Thursday. He was much more energetic than when I saw him in the hospital on Sunday. Little guy sure has a get up and go attitude. Seems like he is almost back to normal. He even is trying to act like his left front leg has nothing wrong with it. But then he surprises himself when he stumbles around. Anyways, will update more when I hear more. Waiting to send the owners of the Lab the bill until all medical expenses are accumulated. Thank you all for all of your support. Your kind words are very encouraging. And please as always, tell any other toy dog owners to be VERY careful when walking/in public with your small puppies. They cant take care of themselves like some of them think they can. |
Oh I am so glad that little guy is doing better!!! I hope he recovers fully with no physical or emotional issues... These little Yorkies are amazing with their attitude and zing for life!!! How is you Mom doing? I hope she is getting over the shock of what she witnessed... I agree that WE all have to be AWARE of our surroundings when walking our little dogs. Both my husband & I have been in scary situations with our Jazzy recently and it happens in an instant... I do hope that lab owners act responsibly and take ownership of the bills without having to go through all kinds of "hoops"... Thanks for the update. Chel |
I am so glad Buster is doing better. I am sorry that you and your parents have to go through this please tell them they are in my thoughts. I am so nervous with Georgie around other dogs even bigger Yorkies. Give Buster a hug for me what a tough little dude. |
I am so glad that Buster is doing better! Sending get well wishes and hugs Boy does that ever make me MAD:mad: You know, I am a law abiding citizen and a dog lover, but that is one dog that needs to be SHOT! bang bang sorry if I offended anyone :D |
Oh my gosh, what a beautiful baby your mom has, and I am so so sorry to hear he was hurt. I get so angry when I see these big dogs running loose. Im afraid to take my two little ones for a walk in my own neighborhood because people are so ignorant and just let their big dogs run free around here. There are currently 2 huge german shepards that run around in the woods behind my house, and a big lab and golden retriever that run around a couple houses up from me. Its just not right. |
attacked! the owner of this lab should at the very least pay for the vet bills as it was caused by their dog! i would persue it to the fullest extint! what if this dog decided to chomp on someone\'s toddler in a stroller or something ?! i say that because i have 3yr old toddler girl !! some people shouldn\'t have pets if they can\'t attend to them and keep them from harming others! oh i just looked at the pics! this baby should get more compinsation then just the vet bills that\'s just a rough awful thing for such a lil dog to have to go through! is he scared of other dogs now?!! |
I was wrong, it really isn\'t the dog\'s fault, the owner should be held accountable! Everytime I look at this type of post my blood boils! |
