| Arrhythmias are problems that affect the electrical system of the heart muscle, producing abnormal heart rhythms. They can cause the heart to pump less effectively. It is not nessicarily a fatal condition, in fact many humans lead perfectly healthy lives with arrhythmias of all sorts. The causes can vary widely from coronary artery disease all the way down to simple stress. Pacemakers arent always required (at least in humans, im no dog expert). can you remember what kind of dysrhythmia they called it?? (arrhythmia is a broad term like saying the heart is "sick") tell me this.... 1. how old is the dog 2. has she ever had any other medical problems let me know and ill see what i can figre out for you (BTW i am a paramedic.....err...for humans not dogs lol) |

| I have worked in cardiology for more than 15 years. We certainly see a lot of people with arrhythmias and have hundreds of patients enrolled in an Arrhythmia Clinic at our office. So that you won't be totally confused - I am going to tell you only that there are many different types of arrhythmias. Some are benign and harmless and others are more serious. And - depending on the type of arrhythmia you are dealing with, there are many different types of treatment --- which consist of doing nothing, taking medication, or the implantation of a special type of pacemaker. You need to learn more about the type of arrhythmia your dog has and then learn what can be done about it. So, continue with your vet and get whatever tests or consults are necessary. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hope you're dealing with a not-so-serious problem after all. Good luck - and please let us know what you find out. Carol Jean |
